i bought this book for my grandkids. they were thrilled to have it in the CD format and liked the links to other sites about Edmonia and friends. what i liked most about the book was the way Harriet Hosmer told the story. I thought it was very intersting. stories about black women who have succeeded in today's world aren't offered often enough, so i think this is a valuble addition to any child's bookshelf.

boring and bland

Being an African-American woman, and craving well-written, educational stories with black characters, I was excited about this book.

Like a child on Christmas, I anxiously awaited its arrival. But boy, was I disappointed.

It was said that the author Dawn Reno had composed a heart rending narrative.

Talk about misleading the buyer. What a joke! I wasn't remotely touched by what I read.

The story was under-developed in some enormously significant places.

Edmonia was accused of murder, and a few sentences later, she was exonerated.

Reno neglected to show Edmonia agonizing over her fate. There was no trial. Nothing.

And worse than poor development, and a story that lacked depth, Reno's prose was as flat as three day old Pepsi. I realize that the story was written for young readers, but that is no excuse for drab writing.

The book was a waste of money. I'd been better off donating the cost of the novel to a worthwhile charity.

Powerful story of an incredible woman

Being an art major, I have always been amazed at how little is written about African American women in the arts. This book, though written for children, has more information about Edmonia Lewis, the sculptor, than any other sources I have come across. Though one of the reviewers seems to find fault with no details about Lewis's trial, I know for a fact that there aren't any details . . . and would have found it negative if Reno had supplied a fictional account of the matter. This is DEFINITELY a book I'd purchase for my child or any black child--and I recommend it highly!

Wow, what gorgeous pictures, Robert Cameron is an amazing photographer and the images in this book are just breathtaking. I defer to the other reviewer on whether the pictures are current, I assume looking at the publishing date of this book that they where not taken yesterday, but quite frankly Lake Tahoe is timeless and the pictures are amazing, whether taken 1 year ago or 10 years ago, a great picture is a great picture. I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys great photography and amazing scenery, but if you are looking for a picture of the most current casino in Reno, you may be disappointed.

We were disappointed in the pictures because many of them are out of date. We travel to Lake Tahoe often, and know the area well. The 'current' picture of Stateline, for example, did not even have Harvey's casino on it. We recently purchased 'Above Chicago' and loved it. The old pictures were great, and the 'current' views of those old pictures were up to date. We expected the Above Tahoe to be similar. It wasn't.

This book should be called "77 jobs you can get with an old rag and a can of Comet cleanser." Clean bathrooms? Scrub graffiti off walls? Groom pets? The jobs in this book are only "careers" if you *truly* have no talent or experience. If that's your situation, then this book will give you ideas. And if you've got kids who want to earn extra money, this book might give them ideas. But if you really want tips on becoming an entrepreneur, this book will only be good for a laugh

If you ever wanted to be your own boss - read this book!

This journal goes along with Tosca Reno's Eat-clean Diet Workout Book. However,it can be used to track any weight training progress. It does have some motivational sayings/info on the pages, but nothing that's not common knowledge. Basically there are two charts: one for weekly, monthly and long-term goals and one to list the exercises. On the exercise chart are spaces to list body part, exercise, and the weight/reps used for up to 5 sets. At the bottom of the page is a space to note cardio activity and general notes. Samples of each of the charts is in the author's Eat-clean Diet Workout book and can be reproduced from there. I gave it 3 stars because you have to write in the name of the each exercise and pound used each day. Also there is not any designated nutrition notes. This is surprising given Reno's emphasis on clean eating and frequent small meals. Other journals provide space for nutrition and weights used. Reno's book might work as a motivating tool if you like to have the matching set of books. Otherwise, keep a computer based journal or use a regular spiral notebook/steno pad to keep track of your progress.

Heroism and the Christian Life is an in-depth sampling of the literature of heroism in its classical, Christian, and modern forms. From the figure of Achilles in the Iliad to the twentieth-century "antiheroism" of Camus and Bonhoeffer, this literary tour is intended to "tune the ear" to the various possibilities, both literary and actual, for heroes and heroism. These include Achilles, the hero who surpasses conventional standards of heroic achievement and reward; Socrates, who challenges the imagination even while defying imitation; Saint Anthony, who achieves greatness even while reflecting the greatness of another; and others in the Western literary tradition. Although written from a Christian perspective, the book is much broader in scope than the title might indicate. Drawing from without as well as from within the Christian tradition, the authors survey and compare the various concepts of heroism as they are presented in a broad spectrum of Western literature.

Hook and Reno succeed in parsing the ancient and modern language of heroism for an audience largely unaccustomed to the very idea of the heroic. This reviewer was indeed "bitten by the ambition to reclaim excellence." The book's primary drawback is its lack of a conclusion. After such a close and expert reading of the texts, one would expect Hook and Reno to conclude with a coherent and compelling vision for heroism in the postmodern age. While the analysis of texts both ancient and modern successfully sensitizes the reader to the possibilities of heroic character and enactment, the final chapter left this reviewer wondering how the authors intend for heroism to be worked out in an antiheroic society. Although the final chapter correctly diagnoses Western society's objections to the concept of the heroic, the authors fall short of providing the expected prescription.

Nonetheless, Heroism and the Christian Life successfully alerts and inspires the patient reader to the possibilities of a life of "surpassing excellence."

Classical literature isn't what it used to be. But then again, neither am I. There was a time when all good Southerners were expected to understand and conform to classical standards of heroism. Of course, that was largely impossible. Just speaking for myself, I had little opportunity to slay my enemies on the field of battle, and little inclination to do so. Given the great gap between expectation and ability, it's little wonder that so many Southerners turn from Homer to Marcus Aurelius, with his rather sad embracing of death so opposite to Achilles' tendency to embrace the death of others.

The great irony of the Christian version of heroism described by Hook and Reno in Heroism and the Christian Life is that it is both more accessible and more demanding than classical heroism. According to Hook and Reno, we are called to identify with and participate in a form of heroism much grander than individual glory. But that participation is not so easy or obvious as you might at first think. Hook and Reno use an impressive spectrum of Western literature to point out our shifting ability and inability as a culture to get our minds around this participation. Homer, Socrates, Vergil, Jesus, Paul, Spenser, Milton, Bonhoeffer, Camus, and even a few semi-obscure martyr wannabes: You're in for a treat.

Be warned. This is a challenging work, both intellectually and personally. Take this important statement about half-way through the book: "Jesus is like Socrates. Both are absorptive in their singularity." You'll have to read the book to understand why this insight is brilliant and worth the effort. But you can immediately see why it IS effort. Who but a pair of classical scholars would talk like that? But by all means, buy and read this book, especially if you appreciate works of great scope, vigor, and humanity. I mean this in the best possible way: This book will burn a hole in your brain.

A fitting epitaph to an astringent critic
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2003-01-27
Clement Greenberg has proven to be one of the most influential art critics of the 20th century. In fact, his name has become almost synonymous with mainstream Modernism, due in no small part to his lucid and carefully considered criticism. This post-humously compiled book is comprised of a series of transcripts from seminars at Bennington college in the 1970s on the nature of taste and criticism. There are also a series of complementary essays based upon the transcripts. However, the seminars (where Greenberg is questioned by the audience) more fully reveal the man himself; his sharp intelligence, his truculence, as well as his tendency to be contradictory and make enormous generalisations.

Greenberg's influence in the art world had waned considerably by the time these seminars took place. However, he still had plenty of insight to offer on the pretensions of the 1960s/70s avant-garde, namely his savaging of "far-out" conceptual art, which Greenberg claimed was simply tasteful Salon art masquerading under the guise of radicalism. It's this sort of irreverence which makes the book an interesting read. Whether you agree with Greenberg or not, it's hard to doubt the honesty with which he set about his task as a critic. He was never fazed by art-world talk, nor artist's reputations (no matter how large), and his advice on honestly reporting your aesthetic responses to art should be taken on board by art-lovers everywhere.

thoughtful and provocative musings on art and taste

Clement Greenberg makes the reader long for the time when criticism came in the form of thoughtful commentary and considered analysis rather than jargon laden showmanship of today. He was elitist and irascible to be sure--a real curmudgeon--but he had an opinion and wasn't afraid to express it. It's easy to disagree with a lot of Greenberg's grand pronouncements but the provocation is welcomed--it stimulates thought and encourages engagement with aesthetic issues. Greenberg's comments about art and kitsch, art and commerce are all the more fascinating post-Warhol/Koons/Sachs, etc.

THE INSIDERS' GUIDE TO RENO AND LAKE TAHOE is a great book about Northern Nevada and California that shows the Reno-Lake Tahoe area to be a region of great wealth and expensive homes. The book also proves that Reno is more ethnically diverse than you'd expect for a city of its size, and there is plenty of wonderful information about outdoor activities in the area. This is a book that you must own if you're planning to relocate to the Reno area, or even just to vacation there.

I purchased this book for a vacation to Lake Tahoe. While it is well-organized and provides a broad overview of the Reno/Tahoe region, it lacked really good, in-depth info on restaurants and attractions. I would recommend this book only if coupled with a more detailed book on the specific activities you want to pursue. We had a hiking guide (Afoot and Afeild in Reno/Tahoe, which was excellent), and I wish we had also had a restaurant guide.

I am currently in the start-up of a new casino. It is a new jurisdiction with a wealth of inexperience. The book plays a very practicle role in this setting and would probably be used best as a reference. The other side of the book serves as a basis for discussion among those people "in the know".

It is always nice in an opening to have someone walk around asking the right questions, making you think of the "small things". This book does just that(save for walking around).

I have not read all the chapters, but what I have read I would recommend.
