Reno Books

This is one of a series produced during the Second World War, when the U.S. government hired the best linguists available to turn out materials that would teach foreign languages to soldiers fast. It is the same methodology now used to teach languages to U.S. diplomats.

In spite of the publication date given above, this book was first published in 1944 or 1945 and the content is dated. Sound recordings are available, but I have heard criticism from Brazilians of the pronunciation.

Excellent books and recordings have been published since The War, and they will be more congenial to most students.

Better books with sound recordings are now available

This book was not written by Janet Reno the Attorney General, its another JReno who resides in D.C. Don't order this book if you are expecting to read about the thoughts of our head of Justice.

I reached way back in my stash of Longarm's for this one published in January 1985.The best thing about this one has to be the cover.The background picture of Longarm has morphed quite a bit since the 1st Episode.His facial features have matured,but overall not as hardened as we see in recent issues.There is also a great picture of him with his rifle and typical outfit.On a lot of the covers, you have doubts about the characters on the covers;but this one leaves no doubt about our hero.
This episode is far from one of my favorites.I am left with the impression that it was weitten as a combined effort of someone whose background was social studies of native Indian tribes with someone whose forte was writing mystery novels. Any imput from a writer with a background of Old West westerns was conspiciously absent.Interesting character depictions , fast action and shoot-outs just weren't there.
Almost all the saga consisted of wandering around in circles trying to find who and why things were happened.Then the last part turns into pondering,mulling over and explaining clues and motives.
If it wasn't for all the stuff injected about Indian cultures,the story would have been tedious. As a matter of fact, the word "tedious" is used several times and describes how I found the story.
When Longarm decides to put on roller skates and voluntarily goes summer skating;you feel you're out of the venue of a fast-action Old West western.

This was a gift for my grandmother, she is new to town and requested a nice laminated map so she could figure out where things were and how to get there. This was the only travel size laminated map we could find. We thought this would be a nice choice for her but this map is to small for her to read and is missing much of the city including the area where she lives. Christmas eve we rushed out to Barnes and Noble to pick up a new much larger map. This is a great buy if you are only looking for a very general idea of where the older parts of town are and dont mind pulling out a magnifying glass to read it.

Maybe not a bad book, but close. There are much better histories of Nevada and even of Reno (William Rowley's, for instance). There is a map of the original town plan, or I would have given it but one star.

The authors seem to have based their research on a book they were too shy to include in their bibliography, Gilman Ostrander's "Nevada, the Great Rotten Borough." (Even when they take quotes from Ostrander, they get them wrong, such as Yerington's quote about horse thieves!)

They have photos from Don Dondero's Dateline Reno that aren't from that book. What a mess!

Nice idea to take a Look Magazine approach to Reno, but this is hollower than a gourd. UNR Press should recall it before someone gets injured reading it.

I just received this book. To my astonishment I found out that this book has more about the artists then PRICES! To give you some specifics in the Art Section there are 259 artisits listed with only 41 artists with prices. I would not call this a PRICE GUIDE. The rest of the book has even less prices listed...

I find it quite amazing that the author included the words "Price Guide" when titling her book. What might be more applicable are the words "Mini-Bio's of Native American Artisans" since that's primarily what this book is. If I had wanted to learn birth/death dates or more about the formal educations of these individuals, I have a local library that I could have visited gratis. I WANTED a PRICE GUIDE reference book as the title implied it to be, and this book sorely missed the mark. It was a waste of both money and time.

What a disappointment. I thought I was purchasing a book about facial muscles and how they could be exercised to achieve a tighter look. After all, the title says "Non-Surgical Face Lift: Bodybuilding for Your Face." But the book is nothing but a long-form advertisement for a face lift procedure usually done in Canada! And to top it off, it's very expensive and takes 12-16 weeks of twice-a-week procedures to produce the results. I can't believe I just spent $$$ on an ADVERTISEMENT for a face lift!!! Very deceptive - this shouldn't be advertised as a "book." I only gave it one star because they won't let you give a lower score!

This book is NOT about you exercising your own facial muscles. You need to get hooked up to a special machine located in Canada or Chicago, IL. It actually costs more than a face lift and needs repeating to keep up the slight results. Seems like a waste of time & money (to me). Just by writing & selling this book, the author has probably gotten her Pan-G lifts done free of cost for advertising and wears so much makeup it is difficult to tell if the procedure really works. I was very disappointed with this book & honestly cannot recommend it.

I purchased this book for information on Reno. What a disappointment. More than half the book is dedicated to Las Vegas, the remainder of the book is dedicated to the REST of Nevada. I would MAYBE purchase this book if I were going to Las Vegas, otherwise, forget it.

When it comes to travel...misinformation is worse than no information. This book was very poorly researched and/or edited, time after time. Descriptions were way off; phone numbers were inaccurate; addresses were wrong...and useful maps completely omitted. Buy any other guide, you can't possibly do worse!
