First of all, never trust a guide book to Vegas which states "we don't gamble" (p. 31) and then tries to tell you which casinos are the best. This book is full of opinionated "top ten" lists which only appeal to a certain demographic. (Namely, the demographic which would drive all over town to find the number one 99-cent shrimp cocktail, and then would look for the number one spot to park the RV. Lucky for them, both lists are provided.)

Every traveler to Vegas should see Sehlinger's Unofficial Guide to Las Vegas, which would appeal to a wide variety of tourists. The younger crowd needs to check out Frommer's Irreverant Guide to Las Vegas.

I was disappointed with this map. It should not read "City Map" as it was pretty much only a "Strip Map". I can get that anywhere on the internet.

I was hoping to find reviews for restaurants in the downtown area where I was staying, but the book was for the most part limited to restaurants in the strip area. Also, I was hoping to find some bargains, but the book leaned toward the more expensive. Perhaps that is what the Zagat books are known for.
On the positive side, the size of the book is good for taking traveling.

POOR CUSTOMER RELATIONS!

CHARLEY PALMER STEAK -- LAS VEGAS
We had originally made reservations for 11 but changed said reservations to 14 which subject restaurant was willing to accommodate at least 6 hours before the 8:45pm reservation. Upon arrival (8:40pm) to the restaurant the host inquired if all the party was present and we responded that "not yet". In five minutes, we responded to the host that all invitees were present. Host indicated that we needed to wait. Host did not respond back to our group who had congregated outside the door of the restaurant for at least a half-hour until I asked when our table will be ready. Host responded that it will take a few more minutes at which time we decided to leave. Host did not apologize or usher the group to seat in the lounge area and have some cocktails. We have complained to the manager of the restaurant and relayed this incident to at least 50
people -- who all agree that the restaurant did not practice exceptional customer service techniques. The restaurant manager did respond with "I'm just returning your call regarding the problem with the reservation on Friday, Sept. 16. The party increased to 14 people and the table that we had available was not ready at 8:45pm -- it was ready at 9:00pm. The gentleman was not willing to wait 15 minutes. So by the time the table was ready - 9:00pm sharp the table was ready - ready to seat him -he left - he said he's not interested anymore. So if you can give me a call back I would really appreciate it. Thank you - bye."
The lack of accommodations by the host(s) and the response by the manager reflects an attitude that the customer need not be taken care of -- Poor customer relations!

Not really up-to-date

I own and use over a dozen Zagat guides, and I have come to respect and depend upon the reviews. So I was sorely disappointed to discover that the so-called 2000-2001 Survey of Las Vegas restaurants is actually a light update of a much older edition. Bellagio, Mandalay Bay and The Venetian have been open for some time now, yet their restaurants remain unrated (though mentioned) in this edition. The tremendous growth in the number of fine restaurants in Las Vegas over the past few years justifies an up-to-date survey.

Could be much better

I have found the Zagat guides to be very helpful in the past. I'm from Utah and the rocky mountain guide told me about several hidden gems just blocks from my house. The other guides have been helpfull because there is not always a lot of good information on night life or restraunts from other sources. The Vegas guide is just too redundant. Other travel guides provide ample information on eating places in Vegas and are able to provide information on gaming, hotels and points of interest too for just a couple bucks more. The Zagat quaint pointers from surveyors are usualy helpfull and unique, however the ones in the Vegas guide are just too conflicting. Worth a read if you fall into one on the cheap, but spend a couple bucks more on a more comprehensive travel guide if you want some good restaurant info.

No real plot: just an endless supply of fiendish humans and subhumans to slash and shoot. The number of Spetznaz troops are endless as is the supply of beer, Marlboros, Mountain Dew, ammunition and aviation fuel: all, apparently readily available in a ravaged post-war America. What kind of warriors would get drunk and fall asleep in indian country? The author knows zip about Las Vegas and Nevada, but does seem knowledgable about West Central Wisconsin. When I lived there it was just Wisconsin.

If you like to read at the 8th grade level you may like these books. If not, save your money: I wish I had.

Sub-Pulp Fiction

Back in the 1970s, dozens of balding heads hatched the idea that a *female* James Bond was a brilliant and original concept, and so a host of hack writers went to work. Adolescents were likewise grooved by the concept, and so I bought this book. I didn't own it for long, because it really is awful. As I recall, there's little suspense in it, even less action, and it is utterly bereft of titillation. On all counts, the Cherry Delight series of pulp novels by "Glen Chase" (several different authors) were masterpieces in comparison.

Despite the late Mr. Wager's fame, he really was a trashy writer.

I purchased this book for information on Reno. What a disappointment. More than half the book is dedicated to Las Vegas, the remainder of the book is dedicated to the REST of Nevada. I would MAYBE purchase this book if I were going to Las Vegas, otherwise, forget it.
