Bringing Down The House

Bringing Down The House, written by Ben Mezrich, is a non-fiction action with the unexpected drops and sudden plot twists of a smoothly written fiction. From the perspective of a high school freshman, card counting seems more like an urban legend than a high-stakes, play-for-keeps gambling obsession; could anybody really keep track of the cards flickering past? In bringing down the house, card counting comes to life, complete with an intense plot line that makes the words seem to pop off the page. Ben Mezrich does am excellent job of relating the story of a team of M.I.T. whiz-kids who card count black-jack tables and run Vegas into the ground. Merzrich's cunning use of vocabulary portrays this story properly; without his ability to make the action come to life, the story would be cheated out of its well-earned bravado and glory. In this story, the main character, Kevin, gets invited to a rather shady club at M.I.T.-the black-jack club. Through Kevin's perspective, Mezrich reveals the mystery behind card counting and unravels the story of the team's exploits in Vegas. Mezrich does a great job of unfolding the drama of this thrilling adventure. Throughout the story the team runs into problems, whether it's a boxing match gone wrong or an insane group of private investigators who will stop at nothing to track down "cheaters" as long as the casinos pay them. Mezrich's great use of language made my heart race during some of the more intense parts of the book. If you're looking for a well written story with an intricate plot line and heart-racing adventure, then this book is for you. I highly recommend it to all readers of any skill level and all interests.

I just got back from Las Vegas and used this guide as a reference. It helped me save a fortune, plus helped me improve every aspect of my trip. I had never been to Las vegas before and went to attend a convention. This book offered great advice about where to stay, where to eat, what shows to see and how to navigate around the convention center. I highly recommend this book to all business travelers!!! It's a valuable resource and trip planning tool.

This book is another great entry in the Midnight Louie series, giving us the back story on Darcy McGill and Steven Austin. I really enjoy finding out about the characters before we got to know them in the other Midnight Louie "The cat and the..." books. If only I didn't have to wait until June to find out what happens next...

I'm glad they these books are now in print, as they give the series an added dimension.

H. Bruce Franklin's finely annotated Melville is once again available.

Perhaps not the best place to discuss the story, at least let's discuss the edition. I have always thought these footnotes have been a necessary part of this long running joke. The book seems tough and well-constructed. Not everyone's copy will be read through, but the others will be thumbed to death, almost like an airliner in static test destruction.

And what a ride! This is a story about story-telling and about story-telling techniques. One of the longest and most absurd being Wilbur/Thoreau's honking of the story of China Aster. Everyone is fighting over how to tell this tale! Himmlerian Mark Winsome lays down the Party Line, Wilbur trying to strain off the tannins. Frank Goodman tries to redeem it. Melville attempts to hide behind it. I find myself arguing with myself about it. Is it genius? Is it that bad? Is Emerson so hateful? Did The Confidence Man actually get angry -- or did he know the barber was just about set to close up shop for the night.

Melville's greatest work in a clean new lifetime edition, available right now.

A sure cure for the blues -- any book by Michele Bardsley.

When reading Housewife for Rent, I was immediately drawn into the light-hearted romp of a romance. The premise -- a 15-year old daughter advertises for a man -- for her mother. The resulting prospective dates are a hoot and a half. A timely intervention by the daughter's math teacher saves the mom from dating hell, however his idea to be her pretend fiancee opens up even a bigger can of worms. The ending is satisfying. You can't go wrong with this one.

Wakoski's most recent work is the third in her series of "An Archaelogy of Books and Movies.: Combining pop culture references about current movies with notions on quantum physics, Wakoski's voice lends a poetic wit to present society. After over twenty books of poetry, Wakoski's "personal mythology", which involves such key players as Medea, Jason, the Steelman, and the King of Spain is still being recreated. Her poetry (which some label as "confessional" constantly reaches new stylistic heights and challenges the reader to dig deeper into themselves and explore their relationship with the worlds she creates. Her search for beauty and artistic passion in the world is still as strong. What better place to look than Vegas

A Must Read For LIR Players!
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 6 total.

I have played using the information that the late Mr. Frome wrote and I found it to be very beneficial! I watched people at a Casino play the game and lose alot of money. By using the information in the book, I was able to take $100 and turn it into $1000 in 20 minutes.

Mr. Frome was the person that had completely calculated the game and the house "edge" so that the Nevada Gaming Comission could allow it to be played in its' Casinos.

The information is invaluable! I recommend this book to anyone that has watched the game and was unsure if they should play it or those that play the game and want to win more!
