I laughed. I cried. Reading how people died, be it from a tooth ache or a gunshot wound after a barroom brawl, was facinating. It makes me wish people put messages on headstones today! It's a great gift!

I am a very big western reader and Mr.McCord is the only author that has done a better job than Louis L'amour in writing these books. The reason is,how human he makes his characters, they laugh, cry, fight and love.He also lets you hear from the little characters. All of this makes it great reading I can't wait for his next novel

Another Great Baynes Clan Story!!

I can not say enough about the Baynes Clan series of books. McCord is equal in every way to Louis L'Lamour in his writing abilities. I just wonder why someone has not made a movie of the Baynes Clan yet. It is the best family western series since the Sacketts and I do not exagerate at all. After reading the Baynes Clan and Walking Hawk, another excellent book by McCord, I am a devoted fan of his writing style. I am eagerly awaiting his next western book!!! ~Bev. Bozman~

If the Lithuanian-American artist, whose fierce study of landscape and national character has been going on for many years, saw in these scenes and faces the incarnation of what is, and was, right with America, he never insists in these stark photographs. It is for the viewer to see and judge all that takes place inside and outside these exposed souls in their magnificent and decadent home state of Nevada, and come to some conclusion as to whether they may stand for a hardihood that was once more widespread, and if so, what hope there is in their persistence. A landmark book for students of the American west and of the photograph as record and hymn.

A fascinating journey made by a humble photographer. The images evoke a stark beauty of the land and an appreciation for a way of life all but lost.

An inherently fascinating biography

Of Rats And Men: Oscar Goodman's Life From Mob Mouthpiece To Mayor Of Las Vegas is the inherently fascinating biography of Oscar Goodman, a man who deliberately became a pre-eminent defense attorney for alleged gangsters for 35 years. Accused but never proven of being more than a mouthpiece and defense attorney for organized crime, Oscar Goodman somehow managed to successfully defend his clients without becoming part of organized crime itself -- at least according to the voters of Las Vegas who eventually elected him as their mayor twice. Of Rats And Men is very highly recommended reading for anyone with an interest in the history of organized crime in America or who wish to avail themselves of a unique insight into the life and philosophy of an accomplished trial lawyer who specialized in defending members of established crime families.

More Insight from Smith ý an eminent authority on the mob

The copious notes and eight pages of bibliography supporting John L. Smith's meticulously researched biographical look at Oscar Goodman, former mob attorney - presently the two-term mayor of Las Vegas, impressed me.

Talk about "insider" information! Smith has long been quoted as a preeminent authority on mob history and "wise guy" relationships. In his book, "Of Rats and Men: Oscar Goodman's Life from Mob Mouthpiece to Mayor of Las Vegas," Smith names a Who's Who of notorious clients, alleged criminal activities, and egregious political innuendoes surrounding the controversial bonds between Goodman and friends. Scared me! While it is obvious the attention-seeking mayor was generous in his interviews with the author, Smith kept me up nights as he interpreted what Goodman would have us believe with his [author's] own extensive background knowledge and investigative prowess. John L. has balls of brass to write as honestly as he does.

Don't let an easy read fool you. This book is a gem for all who follow gaming history, or the Las Vegas / mob connection - to say nothing of government ineptitude (now, that was a hoot!).

All of Shawn Hall's books are excellent. We have used them for several years to plan trips and then go find the locations he mentions. He gives the reader not only the history of the site, but what remains today of the ghost towns, old stage stops, and railroad towns.

A great resource for historians and explorers

Shawn Hall obviously has a love of history and it's preservation. "Old Heart of Nevada: Ghost Towns and Mining Camps of Elko County" is obviously the result of 1000's of hours of research and countless miles of off-road exploration. Hall's account of these now vanished towns is both factual and facinating as he provides the history, stories, and current state of dozens of now defunct towns, mines, and ranch sites of the area.
The text alone is worth the price for the facts and stories, but even better are the historical photos which can often be contrasted with the author's own photo's of the same area.
A must-have for any Nevada historian or explorer.

"The Opium Debate And Chinese Exclusion laws In The Nineteenth-Century American West" by Diana L. Ahmad (Associate Professor of History at the University of Missouri-Rolla) is the story of a mid-nineteenth century 'war on drugs' and immigration restriction policies carried out by governmental agencies. Professor Ahmad articulately explains how anti-Chinese propaganda and the spread of opium addiction led to exclusionary immigration laws and the attitude that the Chinese and the recreational use of opium associated with their communities were a danger to the national economy and middle-class Anglo-American domestic life. A fascinating and scholarly study that features extensive notation, an exhaustive bibliography, and a comprehensive index, "The Opium Debate" is as informed and informative as it is well organized and 'reader friendly'. This is an impressive and very highly recommended contribution to academic library 19th Century American History reference collections and reading lists.

Not being a historian, I have little background in the history of the American West. I really enjoyed this book which undertakes the study of the Chinese in the American West from a new angle and makes the story both informative and interesting. The book is well researched and talks about a seldom discussed topic. We are made aware of the reasons for excluding an element of society, whether right or wrong. Drugs are not a recent phenomenon and it is fascinating to see how they played a role in our country's early history. This book is an easy and interesting read.

This book is a gem of a find. Anyone who enjoys reading "Trip Reports" about Walt Disney World (or Vegas) will find this to be a very intertaining and enjoyable read.

A trip report to the extreme.

If you have ever been to Walt Disney World in Florida this is the souvenir you want to document your trip. If it happened to you, it probably happened to Shari and Mike, but they made it seem funny and put it to paper. Hide all those little Disney hotel soaps so the housekeeping staff would bring more? yup. Think that Splash Mountain song is telling you to show something naughty? yup. Have a great time at Disneyquest? Well, you will just have to read this book.

And then there is Las Vegas. Read about the waiter who didn't know to quit when he was ahead. Ever been on Manhattan Express? Ever wish you hadn't?

Plus tips, reviews, planning info and much more. This book is huge and well worth the price. It's fun and funny, well written and informative, easy to read and hard to put down. I have been to Disney World hundreds of times and I still learned a thing or two, and was entertained along the way. If you are going for the first time, read this book to learn what you are in for.

This book is a souvenir for everyone who has gone to Walt Disney World and was too lazy to write it all down.

THE Source for Nevada Railroading

Review Date: 2001-11-24
Railroads of Nevada and Eastern California is the premier work on transportation in the Silver State. The photos are suprb, the text inclusive and the maps are a must for rail buffs and modellers seeking authenticity. I have owned this set for 35 years and it is nearly worn out from reference. The section on the southern roads is espcially well researched. I have been able to relocate features and buildings from Myrick's maps alone.

David Myrick did an excellent job of weaving history with technology in this readable work. Profusely illustrated, it connects time, place, and Nevada's colorful mining history together in a delightful fabric. The research appears flawless, as I have yet to find contradictory evidence in the several areas I have delved into. Reading the stories, one obtains a feel for the flow of commerce, the excitement of new discoveries, the character of the players in this real-life American drama. Detailed discussions of railroad technology, planning, construction, finance, and operations make this a delightful research tool.

The binding and printing are excellent, with beautiful crisp type and exceptionally clear photgraphs.

Overall, this set is a MUST for any serious student of Nevada railroads. Well worth the cost at todays price.
