A great book about the landings on Utah beach

This book is a must for all those who wants to know what happened at the Cotentin peninsula in june 1944. It covers the beach landing, the airdrop and how the allies fought their way to Cherbourg.

The book has a lot of good maps and illustrations to help the reader. These include maps of which german troops the allies thought were defending the beaches and the peninsula as well as maps showing exactly what reality looked like. Complete OOBs for both Axis and Allies are included. Historically very correct book.

The Omaha Well Remembered
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2005-03-13
Growing up in a town on the Omaha mainline in the 50's, I was quickly taught that the tracks going thru town were not "The Northwestern", but still "The Omaha". It was a proud line and this is a fine telling of its wild and interesting history, from loggers and lumber to cowboys and cattle. My only complaint at all (not a serious one) is in the text on the dust jacket stating how The 400 traveled through Black River Falls. In fact, by the time The 400 flashed through on The Omaha enroute from Chicago to Minneapolis in world record setting speed, the mainline did not even pass through Black River Falls, and the folks there had to go to my hometown, Merrillan, to get on the slick green and yellow cars. A great book, highly recommended!

I've loved the Omaha series since I first cracked open the cover. It's filled with beautiful art, terrific story telling, and enough drama, romance, and thrills to keep anyone turning the page. These books have been hard to come by in the past, so get them while you can! Just remember, they're frank ADULT books, dealing with adult issues. Murder, sex, drugs, and more are the normal routine. However, it's told so well that you can't help but lose yourself in the series. Sadly, there's no end to the tale, but it's a good enough slice of life.

a wonderul account of omaha's lesser known tornado
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2003-12-12
For anyone who lives in Omaha, we all know of the tornado of 1975. The author of this book traces further back in Omaha's history to a tornado that only a few blue hairs would know about or remember. The literary history and the photographic documentation provide a humbling glimpse into the power of a storm that devastateed a town that was struggling to establish itself and it's economy. The story takes us on a journey from Ralston to North Omaha, and show the path of destruction, in both word and pictures, that this deadly storm travelled on that fateful day. If you are into the history of Omaha, or have relatives living out of state from this area, this would make a great read and a great gift.

Soaring with Eagles at the turn of the Century

This is an entertaining saga that includes something for everybody. There is certainly a flavor of what life was like in the late 1880's. It is a great story that captured my interest and became a page turner in various spots as the tension mounted. This would be a great novel for a young adult too. Life was not easy on the Omaha Indian Reservation. TJ Kessler's entralling story starts before his birth with a renegade Indian raid that left 2 dead and a kidnapped baby. The story of his "coming of age" and his search for a soul mate that he saw in a "vision like" experience is sprinkled with tension, giggles, and near-tears emotion. TJ meets many people on his journey to manhood and the characters are well developed and intriguing. How TJ realizes his dreams makes for great reading and a thought-provoking lesson of American history. To Fly With Eagles grabs you quickly with its vibrant text and doesn't let go until you've learned what's to become of every character.

Cheers to this cookbook!

OK, full disclosure, I was on the cookbook committee, so I am biased. But, we worked very hard and tested each one of these recipes, and they are all excellent! Over 800 recipes were submitted, and only 300 made it.

Here's why I love this cookbook (and why over 10,000 have been sold so far!): I love to cook, and I love my hometown of Omaha - this cookbook combines the best of both worlds. It includes wonderful tidbits about famous (and not-so-famous) Omaha restaurants, plus the recipes are truly gourmet, without being too stuffy. Many current restaurants contributed recipes, which have been fun to try. The photographs and menus from long-closed restaurants have been an interesting look inside Omaha's history. And I've solved the only problem the cookbook presents (display on the coffee table or on my cookbook shelf?) by buying two!

Lots of details and interesting little known facts.

This book is definitely for the "insider", for those of us that really love and are deeply involved with the 5th RGR BN.

The author shows you the war through his eyes.
The recollections dont come easy, specially when talking about the fallen comrades.
Training, activation and landing at Omaha on H-Hour D-Day, you are in for a ride.

And you will be a better person by understanding "first hand" what it was to be a Ranger in WWII
