Lower Moments in Higher Education tells selected stories of the author's experiences throughout his higher education career. The true stories provide a framework which tactfully leads to the question of ethics related to the story. I liked the way each story had a message. This book is a must read for the novice and seasoned alike. The book would also be a great required reading for higher education students as well as sitting executives

A Great, Sweet Story

This is a really simple, short read, but it offers such great insight into the lives of five young Native Americans at a mission school. The stories are sweet, but the meanings are profound. Francis La Flesche offers the reader an opportunity to step into their lives and to see how they live and learn in both cultures. I had to read it for a history class, but I enjoyed every part of it. The story does end abruptly, with an ending story unlike the other stories, but it is still worth reading and I would recommend it to anyone interested in Native American life!

Just the flyleaf so far!

I have not yet finished this book, but have thoroughly enjoyed the first 20-30 pages after I got it yesterday in the mail.
When I looked back at this page in Amazon, however, I was amazed at how little information there was, so this is the flyleaf. I hope it helps!
"As a young adolescent, Hollis Dorion Stabler underwent a Native ceremony in which he was given the new name Na-zhin-thia, Slow to Rise. It was a name that no white person asked to know during Hollis's tour of duty in Anzio, his unacknowledged difference as an Omaha Indian adding to the poignancy of his uneasy fellowship with foreign and American soldiers alike. Stabler's story--coming of age on the American plains, going to war, facing new estrangement upon coming home--is a universal one, rendered wonderfully strange and personal by Stabler's uncommon perspective, which embraces two worlds, and by his unique voice.
"Stabler's experiences during World War II--tours of duty in Tunisia and Morocco as well as Italy and France, and the loss of his brother in battle--are at the center of this powerful memoir, which tells of growing up as an Omaha Indian in the small-town Midwest of Nebraska, Iowa, Kansas and Oklahoma in the 1920s and 1930s. A descendant of the Indians who negotiated with Lewis and Clark on the Missouri River, Stabler describes a childhood that was a curious mixture of progressivism and Indian tradition, and that culminated in his enlisting in the old horse cavalry when war broke out--a path not so very different from that walked by his ancestors.
"Victoria Smith, of Cherokee-Delaware descent, interweaves historical insight with Stabler's vivid reminiscences, providing a rich context for this singular life."

A great book about the landings on Utah beach

This book is a must for all those who wants to know what happened at the Cotentin peninsula in june 1944. It covers the beach landing, the airdrop and how the allies fought their way to Cherbourg.
The book has a lot of good maps and illustrations to help the reader. These include maps of which german troops the allies thought were defending the beaches and the peninsula as well as maps showing exactly what reality looked like. Complete OOBs for both Axis and Allies are included. Historically very correct book.

The Omaha Well Remembered

Growing up in a town on the Omaha mainline in the 50's, I was quickly taught that the tracks going thru town were not "The Northwestern", but still "The Omaha". It was a proud line and this is a fine telling of its wild and interesting history, from loggers and lumber to cowboys and cattle. My only complaint at all (not a serious one) is in the text on the dust jacket stating how The 400 traveled through Black River Falls. In fact, by the time The 400 flashed through on The Omaha enroute from Chicago to Minneapolis in world record setting speed, the mainline did not even pass through Black River Falls, and the folks there had to go to my hometown, Merrillan, to get on the slick green and yellow cars. A great book, highly recommended!

I've loved the Omaha series since I first cracked open the cover. It's filled with beautiful art, terrific story telling, and enough drama, romance, and thrills to keep anyone turning the page. These books have been hard to come by in the past, so get them while you can! Just remember, they're frank ADULT books, dealing with adult issues. Murder, sex, drugs, and more are the normal routine. However, it's told so well that you can't help but lose yourself in the series. Sadly, there's no end to the tale, but it's a good enough slice of life.

The book showed me how to play the game and what differences there are online. Even online tells! I didn't think those existed but now I seem to have a pretty great advantage everytime I play. It even has diagrams to show you exactly what to do. It has so many example plays and tells you what to do for specific hands, flops, and opponents. The book is easy to read and navigate through and the writing is very clear and concise (the book is short but has a lot of information). It also has some information on non-hold'em games, like omaha and 7-card stud.
I've read a lot of poker books now that I started playing and this one was definitely one of the most thorough and helpful. I now win money almost every time I play hold'em online. I'm really glad I found this book.
