"After a few sweeps I shook my head `She`s gone! She`s not there!'" The book, The Lost Boy bye Dave Pelzer, is about a boy named David who goes into foster care. His mom, (who is the actual crazy person) thinks her son, David should go into a Mental Institution! I think that she has already punished him enough, but apparently she will still try harder. On page 203, Lillian (David's first foster parents) tells David how his mom has been trying to put him down since he went into foster care! She try's everything in her power to tell everyone that David is crazy. She tells lies about David like starting fires and much more! I think that ages 13 and older could read this book. I think that anyone under the age of 13 wouldn't really understand this book very well. The setting of the book is in a couple different places, in court, and in different foster homes. This Non-Fiction book tells a true story of how David Pelzer servives his life untill he is eighteen, when he has to move out on his own! It is an interesting book, and I believe that people will like it. (It is a very emotional book.)

As a Psychotherapist and campaigner for the rights of children I would recommend this book as a compulsory text for any course on child care, therapy or education.
It is gripping, moving, shocking and eye-opening. It is particularly relevant to understand the capacity of disturbed parents to hide and disguise their cruelty and the mind confusing, emotionally scarring dilemmas faced by the abused child.
And yet it is hopeful and heart warming.

I am a special education teacher at a residential treatment facility that works with children in similar situations. As an end of the year project, I read this story to my 16-18 year old high school girls. They wouldn't let me put it down. The emotions, empathy, and similar situations my girls experienced were finally put into words. David, to them, is a survivor and has given them hope for their own future! Thank you Mr. Pelzer for sharing your story and helping my girls know that they are not the only ones!

This book was about a boy named David who went through a rough time when he was younger. He would get abused by his mother and his dad was an alcholic. The boy had no right and no say in that house hold his younger brothers had more say then he did. he would get tortured everyday and his mother would make him stay and live in the basement with nothing. Later in the book he finally gets rescued and is put into a shelter home. His life isnt how it use to be anymore.

As I read this, parts of the text were unbearable. Yet, Dave's story is an unfortunate reality of the deviance that exists within the human psyche to control, manipulate and abuse another. Anyone involved with educating children in whatever form they chose should read this because the truth brings to light what is hidden in the darkness. Dave is definitely an overcomer and his book will challenge you to look at the little boys and girls we see each day...a bit more carefully and mercifully.

a truley touching story.

Abuse. some people just dont have the courage to stand up for what they know and believe is right. but just think about it you would be saving and inoccent life and giving a chance that wouldnt have been givin.

A Great Historical Resource

Review Date: 2006-12-14
Joseph Balkoski's book on Omaha Beach is a great historical resource like his book Utah Beach. Omaha Beach tells the story of when largely untested American troops assaulted the German army's Atlantic wall. This is a great read covering the events of the day almost minute by minute. It reads like a great documentary. This is not written in the format of a memoir. Balkoski relies mainly on primary sources such as after action reports, unit journals, and citations to create his blow by blow narrative. He includes the invasion's diplomatic and strategic context. Omaha Beach is the closest the modern reader can get to experiencing the Normandy landings firsthand.

Sprinkled throughout the battle account are the accounts of those in the battle. It is a classic. It is a must for any D-day library. It also included comprehensive lists of all Medal of Honor and Distinguished Service Cross winners at Omaha Beach. It has: the Order of Battle, unit casualty list for the first twenty-four hours, unit organization of a 30man assault boat unit weapons, and equipment carried in the assault by a typical soldier, and a series of detailed maps allowing the reader unparalleled insight into the minute-by-minute combat on Omaha Beach.

I read the book several years ago, just prior to visiting the Normandy Beaches. Bought it to have my own copy and read it again. The book's great strength (drawback for some readers, maybe) is its huge volume of detail. It is thoroughly researched; written with clarity; tells the story fully. The human side of this Day In History is also illustrated in meaningful detail; descriptions of unbelievable heroism are numerous; only three Medals of Honor were awarded;many DSCs. Issue: General Cota should have received the Medal of Honor; saved many lives; inspired leadership. A really fine and exciting book.

A Great Description of Omaha Beach That Takes You There

This is a great "you are there" description of D-Day on Omaha Beach in Normandy. Joseph Balkoski has done an excellent job of presenting the official and personnel accounts of people who were there that longest day of the war. The descriptions by the veterans take you into the landing craft, onto the beach, and up and over the bluffs that overlooked the beach. His telling of the story dispels the usual belief that the soldiers were stuck on the beach all day and only got off the beach near the end of the day as depicted in the movie "The Longest Day".

I would recommend this book to anyone wanting a real detailed story focused on this one beach of the D-Day invasion. I would really recommend it to someone who is a wargamer such as myself since reading the stories makes me want to recreate these small firefights as well as the overall battle. I am sure there are many people who feel that way.

Balkoski's style of telling history is very well done and he has done an excellent job of bringing the materials together so that others can follow in the footsteps of the brave men of that day.

I can't want to read Utah Beach!

I decided at first to write a long review of this book, but upon reading the other reviews here I trimmed my review to simply this...

I own and run a battlefield touring company in Normandy and have read many many books on the fighting on Omaha Beach on D-Day. There is no better book than this one, that's it it's absolutely the definitive book on the subject. The author has lived overlooking the beach, he's from Maryland - home of the 29th division and he has studied the units involved for thirty years. This book will never be bettered. I cannot sing its praises loudly enough.

After being a student of Bob Sobie's for just under two years, I quickly realized his love for bicycling and his love for the Elroy Sparta Trail. Since graduating from the college he teaches at (soon to retire, good luck Bob!) I myself began to take an interest in cycling. I figured where better to take a vacation then the Elroy Sparta Trial.

I bought this book to get myself familiar with the paths and towns that make up the trail. The book was wonderfully written and his enjoyment of the trails really shines through. He gives plenty of information on the trails, including what the expect to see on the way. The book also includes a lot of information on where to stay, eat, and other attractions to enjoy on your visit to these beautiful trails. If you plan on visiting these trails, this book is a must!

As one of the Friday Riders listed in this book, I have known and ridden with Bob Sobie, the author of the Elroy Sparta Trail Guidebook, for a number of years. As a matter of fact it was my Bachelor bike ride that Bob mentions in the book. As an author and a psychologist I believe I have a unique perspective of Bob and the words he wrote in this book. If the famous analyst C.G. Jung were to meet Bob he would probably call him a "sensing" person. Let me tell you why I believe that's important for an author of a guidebook. Being a sensing person Bob writes what he gets through his senses. He writes about what sights you will see. He describes the sounds you'll hear. He includes how much the trail will incline or decline. He even includes what you should expect from sleeping and eating at various places along the trail. Though his own passion about the trail definitely does leak out, he leaves whether you ride or how much you ride up to you, as he does with all the other attractions in the area.

Outstanding! I want to point out at the start that I have read most of the sections of this book, not all of it. What I read was good, but the reason you really want this book is the graphics. The maps and photos are the best I have seen, and I own quite a few books on this campaign. I recently used it as a reference with "Omaha Beach: D-Day, June 6, 1944" by Joseph Balkoski. The combination of the two was a great way to find out about that fateful day.

I seen some new photo's I have not seen in any other book I have. I am esp. fond of the book because it has the 467th AAA bunker memorial in it, before and after scenes, and that was my fathers battalion.

Not long ago, I read and reviewed Joseph Balkoski's "Omaha Beach" and somewhat lamented the absence of really adequate maps to better show what had happened, linking the small unit actions with the bigger picture. I must say tha Georges Bernage's book is the perfect companion to Balkoski's, supplying highly vivid maps and photographs to amplify the words of Balkoski's narrative. And it certainly is not necessary to read Balkoski's book to find Bernage's much more visually-oriented work valuable in itself. A detailed picture of German tactical arrangements is presented along with equally detailed portrayals of individual American attacks bypassing and overcoming those defenses. And Bernage's text should not be ignored, as it contains some excellent first-hand account material.

There is no question that Colonel Kingseed has captured the spirit and essance of Capt. Joe Dawson and has provided the reader with personal insights that are properly spaced to elevate this book to one of the best books written on World War II. Every American should read this book and give thanks to men like Joe Dawson and his company of men that gave more than any of us who were not there, cannot even remotely appreciate their achievments.
It is also a credit to Colonel Kingseed that he had the foresight to see the importance of having this story told and get permission from Capt. Dawson to publish some very personal letters to his family for all of us to read. The eloquence that Dawson was able to write in some of the most trying times during the war could be the best memoir that I have read!
With the quality of this book now available for all to read, I cannot wait until the Major Winters book is released.

This book is a splendid addition to the library of anyone interested in World War II. Joe Dawson was an inspiring member of "The Greatest Generation" and his story is vividly told here in his own words and the descriptions of Cole Kingseed.

The letters Dawson sent home reveal the tremendous strains and demands placed on a small unit infantry commander. In "From Omaha Beach to Dawson's Ridge" we find a courageous, reflective and compassionate young soldier from Texas who reacts quickly, professionally and humanely under the most adverse and crucial conditions.

The First Infantry Division was constantly thrust into intense fighting and harrowing situations. Dawson shares his most personal thoughts before and after the Big Red One's engagements from North Africa, Sicily, Normandy and the bloody road to Germany. Kingseed adds key perspective along the way.

Joe Dawson's hunger for mail from home should encourage anyone who has a loved on in harm's way to pick up a pen and start writing to them now.

This country has truly been blessed by the likes of so many wonderful veterans like Joe Dawson and so many other brave World War II veterans. We are fortunate that Cole Kingseed discovered and published this treasure from Joe Dawson. I can't wait to read Kingseed's forthcoming book written with Dick Winters of "Band of Brothers" fame.

A Story of the Best in Small Unit Leadership

Capt. Dawson was was the company CO of G Company, 2nd Battalion, 16th Regimental Combat Team, of the Big Red One. He went into Omaha Beach at H-Hour, D-Day. He was the first off of his LCVP, followed by his communications sergeant and his company clerk. Then an artillery shell struck the boat, wiping out the remaining thirty-three men. That was Omaha.

Of course they didn't land where they intended, but began the war where they landed. They were among the first ashore, among the first to move off the beach, among the first to scale the ridge behind the beach and start cleaning out the German defenders firing down on the beach. They fought across France and into Germany.

Five months later Company G spent thirty nine days defending a ridge along the outskirts of Eilendorf, Germany that has gone down in the history of the Big Red One as Dawson's Ridge.

This book was put together by Col. CC Kingseed, former chief of military history at West Point, from the letters Capt. Dawson wrote home. It is a tale of the very best of small unit leadership.

This is a well written memoir with excerpts from letters home and a wealth of information about the combat experiences of Captain Dawson. He was very articulate and had a keen eye for observing the details and emotional struggles around him (as well as his own inner moral struggles with the war he was fighting). If you're looking for remembrances of D-Day and the fighting in Normandy, as well as a part of the campaign in N.W. Europe that has not previously been published, I highly recommend this book.

I just finished reading Sgt. Slaughter's book and I highly recommend it. Much has been written about what it was like to land on Omaha Beach, but very little has been written about the training that the GI's went through prior to the invasion. I particularly liked the anecdotal accounts of Sgt. Slaughter's drill sergeant and the accounts of some unauthorized departures from base (particularly to get a steak dinner!). The descriptions of Sgt. Slaughter's training as a 29th Ranger was very interesting as very little is available about this unit.

This book is an easy book to read (it kept me turning the pages) and tells a very good and compelling story. Through the eyes of the author, the reader experiences a different aspect of war - the compassion of soldiers and the camaraderie forged by war.

Bob Slaughter has captured a piece of history in a unique and fascinating manner. His recounting of personal and historical events surroundnig one of the defining events of modern time is not only a good documentary but entertaining. Knowing him as a fellow "Stonewall Brigade" member adds even more interest from my perspective. He tells the story from a real life perspective ... how it really was then and what it took to succeed in the mission. Reading this book will certainly give you a great view of what the men and women went through to win the war. He pulls no punches in revealing some mistakes made in planning and execution at every level. Anyone who thinks "freedom is free" should read this to learn the real "cost of freedom."

D-Day Survivor's Moving Story of His Wartime Experiences and Beyond

Review Date: 2007-06-23
Sgt. Bob Slaughter, a D-Day veteran, was the moving force behind the implementation of the National D-Day Memorial and, now at the ripe old age of 82, is the Chairman of the Foundation for the memorial. His book, some 60 years in the making, movingly tells the story of what it was like on Omaha beach, Normandy, 6 June 1944 and thereafter.

The author's story really begins at the tender age of 15 when he convinces his parents to allow him to sign up for the Virginia National Guard. He joined in early 1941 and was in basic training at 16, after his unit was called up for federal service with other local Virginia outfits.

Shortly thereafter, the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor. America, and the Virginia National Guard, was now caught up in World War II.

After initially guarding the East coast his unit was sent to England. On the way his transport, a converted oceanliner, inadvertently ran into a British warship, cutting it in two and killing several hundred British sailors.

While in England, the author volunteers for a ranger battalion and trained intensively in Scotland but this unit never saw combat, was disbanded, and the men were sent back to their original units.

The author's training then continues in England for the invasion of Normandy. The invasion comes, of course, on 6 June 1944. The author is in on the third wave of landings that day, but the carnage experienced by his unit, D Company of 116th Infantry, 29th Division, on the beaches was no less than many on the first wave. That first day his Company suffered over 40% casualties, about one-third of whom were from his hometown, Roanoke, Virgina. (The D-Day Memorial is in Bedford, Virginia. Bedford suffered even heavier losses during the invasion, 23 alone on D-Day, than Roanoke.) The author's description of that day, as men were crushed by their own landing craft or shot and drowned under the weight of their 60-pound packs, is quite intense and not soon forgotten. Particularly memorable is the author's recognition that, at 6 feet 5 inches, he displayed an especially large and inviting target to the German defenders.

The author's story continues as he survives D-Day, is twice wounded (once in the head and once in the kidneys) but rejoins his unit in the fight across France and into Germany.

After being released and coming home in July 1945, the author describes the personal turmoil and feelings he and other veterans felt after the war. After being trained so long as killing machines, it was not so easy to disengage those instincts. Along with many veterans, the author kept fighting after the war ended, only this time with his fists.

He eventually settles down and becomes a newspaper reporter but, as the years go by, becomes more and more peeved that not only was there no national memorial to those Americans who fought and died on D-Day but the younger generation(s) seemed to know, or care, little about it. After his retirement, he began to spend more and more time on obtaining a memorial. His efforts were finally rewarded after public attention on D-Day was increased as its 50th anniversary approached.

His book is an important asset not just to the history of World War II but also as to the post-war stresses of veterans and a nation's recognition of its heroes.

Inspiring pictures of societies in England, France, Germany and Austria in the 40's.Analysis with such a high sensibility and far reaching perspective that they seem written in the 90's. A conscious soldier and doctor at war with honor. Humor instead of truculence proves to be effective to make read and feel. Humorous at difficulties of a sophisticated mind within the hardships of war-field life. Humorous at the many fake sons of Victory, like France or Austria, which lived the following 50 years on the myths of all having been in the Resistance to the Nazis, when actually 30 to 40% of every State in Europe had embraced rightist to fascist ideas. A must for anyone interested in euro-american history, sociology, and collective psychology.

I enjoy listening to his engrossing stories and this book was just a whole new one to catch my breath and fufill my thirst for history and information.

Fifty years after WWII, it is rare and unusual treat to read a firsthand account of the Allied advance through Hitler's Fortress Europe from D-Day to VE Day. Dr. McDermott's account is based partly from memory, but mostly from the hundreds of letters he wrote his wife during the course of the campaign. A half-century later, Dr. McDermott thought to throw the dusty cardboard box of correspondence away, but fortunately for us, his daughter convinced him otherwise, and he decided to take the letters and write this book about his extrordinary experiences.

In the 1990's, our collective memories of WWII are shaped by Steven Ambrose and "Saving Private Ryan." This book rounds out these accounts with another, more thoughtful side of the GI's experience. There are accounts of shelling and blood, but the book focuses on how simple acts of kindness or simple pleasures of normal life -- a French peasant giving a US soldier some apples, or a beautiful sunset over Caen in June 1944 -- assume such poignant meaning and enlarged proportion.

Dr. McDermott was one of the first doctors at the scene when the Nazi concentration camps were liberated. His account of the suffering is mournful and harrowing. Throughout the book he talks about Nazi brutality, but it isn't until the final chapters that he sees firsthand to what depths that brutality would sink.

For anyone interested in WWII, European History or the Holocaust, I would highly recommend this book.

Robert Vivian's prose is so creatively lush, unexpected and unpredictable, you can hardly believe the "stories" he relates (he calls them essays) are based wholly on personal experiences. They read more like poetic fictions, and yet the style is quite accessible -- nothing self-consciously obscure or tediously "literary." If this is how he treats non-fiction, I can only imagine the delight of reading his fictions.

Robert Vivian has taken the personal essay to new heights, expanding poetic language into a deeply inspirational journey into the human experience. If ever you believed the essay genre to be dull and pedantic, Vivian will change your mind forever with his gorgeous language and important insights. The essay is boring no longer

I HAVE BEEN AN INSTRUCTOR FOR 8 YEARS AND THIS IS NOW ONE OF THE REQUIRED BOOKS THAT ARE INCLUDED IN MY TRAINING CLASS FOR NEW DEALERS. AT MY SUGGESTION A LOCAL POKER ROOM HAS INCLUDED THIS AS THEIR RULE BOOK AND ALL SUPERVISORS ARE REQUIRED TO USE IT. THIS BOOKS HAS COMPREHENSIVE UP TO DATE RULES. AS WE KNOW RULES MAY CHANGE FROM ROOM TO ROOM, BUT SOMETHING THAT IS CLOSE TO STANDARD THE POKER ALMANAC HAS IT ALL. TDA RULES, ROBERTS RULES, GAMES, AS WELL AS A GREAT UP TO DATE GLOSSARY. THIS BOOK IS AN ASSET FOR TRAINING NEW DEALERS. I USE THIS AND THE PROFESSIONAL DEALER'S HANDBOOK AS A REQUIREMENT TO PURCHASE.

Game Day highly recommends this book as the standard poker book for use during all types of poker games. This book is especially helpful to players in home games of poker, where it is important to have a way to resolve rules disputes quickly and amicably.

We at Game Day saw that there was something missing in the current field of poker books: a standard poker rule book. Before we published the Official Rules of Poker, the only authorities on the rules of poker was Scarne and Hoyle, which were written in the Nineteenth Century. The game has changed, especially in the last ten years, and we realized that it was important to have a Twenty-First Century rule book.

When we put out the word that we were looking for an editor and for such a book, Kelli Mix came forward. Ms. Mix, or "Poker Mom" as she is known at the poker table, eagerly took up the challenge of gathering and writing the rules to suit the modern game of poker. This turned out to be a gargantuan task. Ms. Mix researched each rule, making sure that they were found in at least five independent sources. Mix turned out to be a wonderful choice as editor and author of the Game Day Poker Almanac Official Rules of Poker.

Mix is a professional poker player. She is still under most poker players radar, but she is quietly climbing the ranks of tournament poker players (she finished 11th in the 2007 World Series of Poker Texas Hold 'Em Women's tournament in a field of more than 1,200 players). However, she is more likely to be found at cash games, playing high stakes.

The Official Rules of Poker includes all the rules of poker, from the most basic hand rankings to the most obscure tournament rules.

Contents:
1: Elements of Poker. This chapter covers the most basic rules of poker, and also describes the way poker is played in casino card rooms. Mix wrote these rules in a way that makes them easy to use while playing a game.

2: Professional Poker Rules. These rules cover more of mechanical means of acting in a poker game, giving the finer definitions of what constitutes a raise, a call or a fold. They also discuss the penalties of rules infractions. There are four parts to this chapter.

a) Robert's Rules of Poker. These rules were written by professional poker player and authority, Bob Ciaffone, as a standard set of rules of cash games in casino card rooms. While local laws may require changes to these rules, and some casinos use their own rules, these rules are often cited as the official set of rules in professional play.

b) Robert's Rules of Poker for Private Games: This is Ciaffone's "Robert's Rules of Poker" which he adopted to home games where no impartial dealer or floorperson is present.

c) Poker Tournament Director's Association Rules (TDA Rules). Each year, the Professional Poker Tournament Directors Association updates its rules, which most casinos and poker leagues use as their official rule book in tournament play. Tournament rules add a new layer of rules to poker, as tournaments are about eliminating players, not about accumulating money.

d) World Series of Poker Rules: The World Series of Poker is considered the premier poker tournament event. Due to its sheer size and commercialism, the rules for WSOP tournaments are different than TDA rules. Many poker leagues use WSOP rules instead of TDA rules, as the WSOP rules are more popular among those who learned poker from television.

3: Poker Etiquette. There are types of behavior frowned upon in poker games, due to the fact that poker is a highly competitive game and may involve large sums of money. In some games of poker, violating etiquette may result in ejection from the game.

4: Variant Poker Games. Includes 69 different versions of poker, including 5-Card Draw, 5-Card Stud, Cincinnati, Chicago, Baseball, Anaconda, Mexican Stud, Chinese Poker, Iron Cross, Guts, English Stud, Kansas City Lowball, California Lowball, Pineapple,Spit, Three-Card Draw, and the ever-hilarious Indian Poker. Also includes rules for declaring wild cards and using jokers. WhIle professional poker players and casino card rooms will never play most of these games, home games are notorious for playing "dealer's choice" where the dealer chooses which of the many variations of poker will be played that hand. (Note: Mix and I had a really good time finding out about all of these games.)

5: Glossary. Again, Mix was very thorough in her research. Poker terminology is highly colorful and is a lingo all its own. from the Nuts to the Fish. Mix used multiple sources, as there are many local poker terms and terms used that do not last more than a few months. She excludes popular names for two-card Texas Hold 'Em hands, purposefully, although we plan to have a separate glossary for hand names in future editions. Still, this is one of the most complete glossaries I have seen in a poker book anywhere.

6. Index: Okay, I did the index. I believe that indexes should be thorough, and so I did my best to make the index easy to use in the heat of play. Still, this was a fairly easy index to create, as Mix's presentation of the rules and her organization of the material was straightforward, allowing me to easily pick out the rules.

The Official Rules of Poker has been wonderfully received. Professional poker dealers have been clamoring to get this edition. When we released the book at the WSOP 2007 in Las Vegas, the WSOP dealers practically knocked me over trying to get their own copy.

Thank you for considering The Game Day Poker Almanac Official Rules of Poker. I personally hope you will find it to be of great use, and that the book will provide you with years of fun--and fair--poker.

This is a concise encyclopedia of the rules for poker. The Official Rules will particularly appeal to novices as it explains the nature of the cardroom, the equipment integral to the game, and hand rankings. Much of it is based on Robert's (Bob Ciaffone's) Rules of Poker and is elaborated upon by the author. It provides an introduction to the game as well by experienced player, Kelli Mix. The various styles of games are also discussed: limit, spread limit, no limit, and pot limit. The text covers just about everything including seven card stud high low and deuce-to-seven high low. The explanation of tournament rules is valuable because, as those of us who watch HSP already know, tournaments and cash games are entirely different animals. It even tells you what should be done with the "odd chip" in casino games. I appreciated the definition of "kill pots" and wish I would have read it before I began playing in kill limit games online, lol. This is definitely something I could have really used back in 2004 when I first began learning about the game.
