I thought this article provided good insights into government contracting and the future direction of this industry. Very helpful to those managing contracts and working with the DoD as a contractor.

Finally, a common sense approach to managing government contracts!

I had the pleasure of hearing Mr. Cavadias speak on this journal at a symposium earlier this year in Washington. His insights into the government's need to invest more specialized and dedicated resources toward managing contracts rather than just awarding them is long overdue for action. Taxpayers' investments into government-outsourced services could be better protected if this common sense paradigm shift is provoked. I'm certain that the Congressional Subcommittee on Government Reform would agree with the premise of this journal because it makes good business sense.

A new take on old debates
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2003-08-03
Assistant Professor of History at Georgia Tech Institute, Andrea Tome's recent work is a compilation of primary and secondary source documents from the ongoing reproductive rights battle. Although neither the research area nor the format is new, the methodology and delivery method is altogether new and refreshing.

Whereas such collections (being the mainstays of prudent public schools who want to balance their social issues collection in an attempt to ward off the censors) would normally strike me as being overly sanitized and academically useless in the post-secondary environment, this effort epitomized a well researched and conscientious work designed to get scholars and general public alike thinking AND talking with each other. The ultimate purpose of the compilation was to truly give the readers as much information as possible instead of intentionally/unintentionally censoring their natural information thirst.

In addition to already standard information on reproductive rights (primary source documents from landmark court cases and secondary articles from established researchers such as Petchesky), Tome includes interesting information which will be undoubtedly bizarre to many people who had previously considered themselves relatively educated on the issues.

Because I had only previously heard the term `Lysol douche' in reference to illegal abortion, and knew (for example) wire coat hanger manufacturers did not encourage alternate uses of their product in open advertisement, I was completely dumfounded to discover the Lysol company formally encouraged women to apply the substance upon their `delicate membranes' until the 1960's. I have not personally met anybody who admits to this procedure, and am not sure I would really like to either.

Contraceptive advertising restrictions only allowed companies to address such issues in terms of `feminine hygiene' and the company (smelling desperation and fear) exploited the climate, and American society's imminent trust in science. After all, if a `prominent' European female physician was enthusiastic about the substance herself, you knew it had to be good stuff.

Ironically later research by others proved the people in such copy were merely actors hawking the company's products and there was no concentration which the disinfectant was considered safe for intimate cleansing. Douching also paradoxically increased conception chances by washing the sperm into places where it could fertilize the egg and/or drastically alter the body's natural Ph balance.

Like the aforementioned advertisement, any perspective of reproductive history (reflecting the issue itself) is fraught with double meanings and dubious contexts. Because it forces consciousness the American ideals of freedom and democracy have not always accepted women (and some would argue continue to do so) the historical evidence is often hotly contested---especially by those classified as anti-abortion.

Another distinguishing feature of Tome's volume includes the voices of those opposed to reproductive rights. Innately easier for both sides to only include those perspective with which they only agree, the inclusion is a serious step in expanding policy arguments. Still despising what they stand for, I am now able to dissect their own words and place the arguments more firmly in tandem with a specified time.

Conversely because even `progressive' voices are as much a product of their time as more conventional voices in an issue debate, it is dangerously absurd to presume the arguments for either side are timeless. Unlike the 19th century feminists who campaigned against abortion, medical surgery is now antiseptic in America and the infections which do arise are proactively treated with antibiotics. Were these same women alive today, they could just as easily be taking up the banner (as did Planned Parenthood founder Margaret Sanger who originally campaigned against abortion from her experiences treating illegally-induced complications) and revering their courses.

I am in Dr. Tone's class at Georgia Tech and when I first realized that she had her own book on the required reading list I was not looking forward to it. I could not have been more wrong when I thought this would be another dry approach at something that could be enthralling. This is enthralling! This was a completely new world for me. The articles in this book opened my eyes to ideas and thoughts that will play a part in my life forever. The articles are not at all boring or dry-they are all enlightening. If you are grappling with issues that you feel you need to take a stand on then this is the book that will pull you onto the train!

This cookbook is worth much more than its valued price. What I most like about this book is its diversity and the apparent shared effort of many people across the world to put it together. You can find just about any kind of recipe that will satisfy your taste buds in here. Every recipe I have tried so far has been a hit and the instructions are very clear and simple. It's also good to know that not only will you be savoring great recipes by buying this cookbook, but you will also be contributing to a very good cause.

I may be bias since I am the daughter of the creator of this cookbook, but there are really some wonderful recipes in this book. All the recipes that I grew up with are present here, including recipes from all continents. This is now my primary cookbook since almost any taste I am craving is in here with easy to follow directions.

Plus, there is not much knowledge or hype about Hepatitis C yet, but the truth is, its a growing problem in the States and the World that is mostly overlooked. But Hepatitis C infects millions of people, whether they know it or not and can lead to severe cirrosis of the liver and death. The treatments available now are invasive, difficult for the patient and have a low success rate. Research for new treatments is necessary.

You will not be disappointed with this cookbook.

The author's name is incorrectly listed as "Alberta Smith". It is actually Albert A. Smith, Jr.

Mr. Smith's book is the seminal treatment of the subject of coupling of electromagnetic fields into transmission lines. Equations are derived and presented for uniform and non-uniform fields, balanced lines, and unbalanced lines over a ground plane. The material is applicable to many real engineering problems commonly encountered.

A. A. Smith's treatise must be the definitive work on field-to-wire coupling. His formulas are repeatedly used to test and verify results from method of moments (MOM) and other codes, and after becoming familiar with his closed-form solutions (which by the way are easily brought into MathCAD) they become an essential tool for predicting EMC interactions. He covers the effects of incident electric and magnetic fields to single and paired wires over an image ground plane, lossy wires and shielded cables. It's a thin book, but every page is worth the price of the book when you need it - and you'll need it often if you're involved in EMC analysis.

I was introduced to 'Crime Scene Investigations' while attending a teaching workshop. I ordered it right away for my high school level Criminal Justice class. It is full of experiments which apply to virtually every unit my class covers. With the help of the book, I have set up a classroom Crime Lab, of which I am quite proud. We are able to perform an astounding number of experiments, and the lab causes quite a stir with our visitors.

As a retired police officer, I am very aware of the validity of the lessons presented in 'Crime Scene' and feel they would be of value to any of my students who decide on a career in Law Enforcement.

If you work in the field of forensic psychology, police work, and/or a crime analyst this book is a must read. This book not only is enjoyable to read but the last several chapters are filled with research backed valuable information to give the reader a realistic view into an offender's psyche. In short, this is the best book for a reader who wants a real view of how geographical profiling and investigative psychology can be utilized in investigations.

It is this reader's recommendation to stick to books written by Dr. David Canter, Dr. Laurence Alison and academic journals if you are involved on hands on work in the field of Investigative / Forensic Psychology.

Review of CRIMINAL SHADOWS, INNER NARRATIVES OF EVIL
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 2006-08-30
Having a strong interest in true crime, with an emphasis on the psychology behind the criminal mind, I found this book imformative and entertaining. Unlike many books in this gendre it does not explore extensive graphic crime detail, but sufficient to provide an example of a point being made. The book wonderfully details a very scientific approach to understanding the criminal mind and profiling. It is interesting how a strong emphasis is placed on geographic profiling, the book explains the reasons for this.
Clearly anyone who has studied some basic psychology and the works of well known 'theorists' will enjoy some sections more than those who haven't. If you haven't don't worry there are many sections anyone interested in the subjuct matter will find facinating. You may well discover a little about yourself.
Overall if you are interested in psychological profiling and how it works get a copy and have a read.

Highly Informative, Highly Recommended

Dr. Canter's book is the best book I have read on the subject of criminal profiling. Unlike most other books on the topic, like the ones written by former FBI profilers, Dr. Canter lucidly explains how to construct a profile of serial rapists and killers. This book is also an introduction to Investigative Psychology, a field of study developed by Dr. Canter et. al. Worth reading for anyone interested in serial murder and criminal profiling.

This extroardinary piece of literature has left me so engrossed in the lives of the characters that I feel as though I was an old chum of theirs myself. In fact, I became so inamored with them that I picked up somewhat of an Irish brogue while attempting to imitate their speech. The author should be highly commended for his strong use of language that makes the characters come to life as they do. As an avid reader, there is no greater joy than to be able to open a book and be temporarily transformed to the setting in which it takes place. For this, I extend my utmost gratitude and respect to this accomplished author who has allowed me, in my mind, to visit the beautiful Emerald Isle. There are simply not enough words to describe how impressed I am with this book however I will use the ones that most accurately describe it: CAPTIVATING, ENTERTAINING, HILARIOUS, BEST_SELLER! I strongly recommend this book to anyone who loves to read and loves to laugh. I am quite confident that you will enjoy it as much as I have.Enjoy!

The ultimate reference book for anyone concerned about the all too common acts of deadly violence committed by youth. Recent reports claim that both Colorado shooters had a history of animal cruelty. Animal cruelty is often a precurser to other acts of violence including child, spouse or partner and elder abuse. This book gives professionals, students and concerned citizens an understanding of that connectedness and emphasizes the need for a hoslistic approach to violence prevention.

This book is the ideal graduation gift for anyone earning degrees in psychology, criminology, social work, education, or anthropology. It is a must read for veterinary and medical school graduates. The perfect end-of-the-year teacher appreciation gift is Cruelty to Animals and Interpersonal Violence Readings in Research and Application edited by Randall Loockwood and Frank R. Ascione.

Because of this important book, animal cruelty is finally beginning to be recognized as a serious crime, as well as a predictor or indicator of other criminal behavior. A MUST HAVE resource!
