The Society for American Baseball Research has outdone itself again, with a companion book to "Deadball Stars of the National League;" appropriately enough called "Deadball Stars of the American League." Following the same manner as the N.L. book, it has short biographies of the major stars for each of the franchises active between 1901 and 1919, complete with many photos. This excellent book again utilized a huge amount of people on the "Deadball" Committee of the organization taking part in the writing, editing and fact checking. It's a wonderful book for those wanting a feel of the game in the first decades of the 20th century, and of the players of that time, and I highly recommend it.

A Study of How to investigate a deep sea wreck
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2004-07-05
Peter Limburg has done a considerable amount of research on a number of ships and planes that have gone down to the depths. Unlike Shadow Divers, which covers just one wreck, Peter Limburg's book covers the details of the work done to investigate a number of undersea wrecks, such as The Derbyshire, the Gaul, the Flare, the Lucona, the Marine Electric, the Rema, the Estonia, the Edmund Fitzgerald and quite a few others.
It's amazing the amount of time and money that was expended to find out the cause of these disasters. Technical details of the equipment used are included to give as complete report as possible.

A Fabulous Read!

This is a stunning book! I couldn't put it down. One mysterious disaster after another presented moment by moment as the tragedy unfolds, the suspense rises, the spine tingles and the fingernails get shorter and shorter -- and the solution is eventually uncovered by undersea divers and their robotic aids. My eyes just raced across the pages. Limburg is a great storyteller with an easy, readable prose and a gift for explaining nautical details and mechanical equipment so anyone can understand them.

Remember the ferry "Estonia" which sank in the Baltic Sea in 1994? The history of that fiasco will open your eyes. Want to know why the Soviet Sub "Kursk" sank in 2000? Or what happened inside the crew capsule of Challenger in 1986? Or what went on inside the cockpit of EgyptAir Flight 990 in 1999 when the plane headed straight down into the Atlantic? These are only a few of the tragedies Limburg discusses. Thanks to deep sea divers, robots and submersibles, the answers to many long-standing mysteries are now known. You will learn a lot about the logistics of a deep sea dive, how wrecks are raised, what kinds of clues the experts look for, and, most importantly, how these disasters come about.

I'd recommend this book to anyone over 10. Limburg's flawless writing, dry humor and gentle wit are endearing; you feel you're being guided by a friend through a new and amazing world. I promise you, the words will leap off the page, your heart will race and your palms sweat. And you'll hardly notice you're learning a heck of a lot about modern deep sea salvage in the bargain.

I Could Not Put This Book Down!

And that doesn't happen much for me! Limburg's book selects a series of case studies regarding undersea wrecks, including ships and planes.

It is well-researched and also well-written, with a pacing that makes for an absorbing and fast read. Yet you don't miss anything.

I just recently finished a book on the tragedy of the Russian submarine Kursk, "A Time to Die," (see my review), and there is information I didn't know about here.

Among the other well-known wrecks include that of the Edmund Fitzgerald, which goes over the varied beliefs as to how the ore boat went down. Limburg also takes note of the comments of some who seemed to have an axe to grind against her captain, yet those seem to have little in terms of standing power.

I was intrigued by the loss of the Arctic Rose, a trawler that went down in the Bering Sea, and the loss of the "Derbyshire." Very interesting reading, and the technical explanations and the logistics of how the searches and recoveries were made was simplistic, but not terribly so.

Limburg has a bit of venom here and there, subtly placed for politicos -- the Lucona case and the loss of the Challenger are laid at the feet where they should go -- in the former, a politcally connected criminal, and the latter government officials, corporate bigwigs and NASA upper management who wanted a showpiece and put, as Robert Ballard said, a little too much faith in our vaunted technology.

Excellent book, highly recommended.

Making history accessible to everyone is not only a rare talent but a great service to the public, and this is a book that can be enjoyed by everyone. It is full of wit, insight, wonderful illustrations and photographs. It captures the most important political details of the last five centuries in a way that brings home to the reader the true historical significance of events many of us have only ever heard or read about from a single (authorized) perspective. Much of history is so bloody and disturbing that it can deter people from delving into it. Mark Almond's book is gripping enough to prevent readers from turning away from the horrors, and the importance of that should not be underestimated. We all have a responsibility to be aware of the real causes behind the great tragedies in human history. The great revolutions of the last 500 years have occurred at such a horrendous cost to mankind that for any of us to simply sit back and say "that could never happen again, not in this day and age" would be tantamount to criminal negligence. How many people predicted the terrors, wars and famines of the last half millennium? As the author writes in the opening chapter, "Complacency has rarely been a good prophet." Taking those words to heart, any reader of this book should find he or she has the impetus to read on. As an added bonus, the reader should find tremendous enjoyment in turning the pages.

This book provides the reader with short definitions of statistical and research terms in easy-to-understand language. It removes some of the mystery. I work with graduate students who are writing research proposals and either theses or dissertations. While they have completed coursework in statistics, they are unfamiliar with many of the terms that are used in journal articles and research books. This book provides a link to help them understand what they are reading and allows them to write their papers with more authority. I have recommended this book to my students, and the professors at several universities with whom I work. These professors are now suggesting their students purchase this book during their coursework to help them with critiques and other assignments.

beginning and advanced students alike. My hat goes off to

Differentiated Coaching: A Framework for Helping Teachers Change

Awesome! I recommend this book to anyone who is responsible for helping teachers improve; administrators, educational consultants, instructional coordinators, instructional coaches, etc. I ordered this book because I wanted to figure out how to model differentiated instruction for the teachers that I work with. I not only have a game plan for differentiating my coaching, but also have a clear understanding of why what I was doing before was not working. This book helped me better understand myself, my teachers, and the students that we serve. Its the best book I've read on coaching yet.

Great Roadmap
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2006-04-06
The following comments were submitted by a student the first time I used Dr. Hatch's excellent text--Jim Horn

This book provided a rich description of qualitative research and an easy to understand roadmap for students embarking on the process of conducting a qualitative research study. Hatch took a difficult subject and made it accessible to novice researchers by providing an in-depth, well-thought out presentation of how to go about conducting research step by step in a logical manner. It was thorough from beginning to end. It also spoke to the individual, unique personal qualities and characteristics of the researcher that is inherent to the research. Therefore, it offered us an opportunity to do some real soul-searching and see ourselves in a different light.

It was easy to read and understand and organized well. I thought the section about writing and Hatch's personal experiences were very valuable not only for researchers but for those who wish to write or improve their writing skills in general. The data analysis chapter was extremely helpful during the data analysis process because it provided clear, easy-to-follow steps. I used it as a guide and a reference for my project.

One suggestion is that the section on research paradigms might be a little difficult for some students who are not familiar with the meaning of ontology and epistemology. In our class, a number of students noted they had a hard time understanding these concepts so it might be helpful if there was a paragraph that explains these concepts leading into the connection to the various paradigms.

Overall, this is an excellent introduction for students to the various steps in the process. It was enjoyable to read, enlightening and it gave me a solid foundation for conducting my own study. I loved the book and I enjoyed doing qualitative research. It was also helpful . . . to enable us to delve deeply into the challenging and exciting experience of conducing qualitative research. The book and Dr. Horn also provided a good contextual framework for different methodologies as well.

The importance of qualitative research in education settings can not be underestimated in world in which children are often reduced to nothing but a number on a standardized test score. Thank you, Dr. Hatch, for giving us this wonderful gift and thank you Dr. Horn for sharing it with us.

As a new qualitative researcher, finding Dr. Hatch's book "cleared the clouds" and provided an easy to read support for all the processes necessary to be successful with a qualitative research project, especially for dissertation students. After reading all the classics (Yin, Creswell, Denzin, Lincoln, Stake, Miles and Hubermann, etc) Hatch brings it all together and provides solid questions for you to evaluate your own work before sending it into your committee. Must have for new qualitiative researchers!

I'm a graduate student conducting a survey for my thesis. The Nardi book is, by far, the single best text that I've come across for doing survey research. It combines good chapters on survey design, but it really shines in providing a primer on key statistical methods for analyzing survey data. I don't have a strong stats background, but Nardi's text is very accessible and to the point. It clearly discusses the various stats options for examining survey data and points you in the right direction for more detailed inquiry, if necessary. After plowing through countless dry, mind-numbing stats texts this book was a god-send!

I had no fewer than 4 books to refer to when I first began learning to read symbols in my dreams. This is the ONE that remains to be used even now, after years of reading/journaling my dreams. It is most helpful in that it includes "actions." It is very informative with colors, numbers, chakra inf., and it includes information on dreaming basics. Including information on why we recieve dreams that include death, sex, nightmares, other significant events. There is a page devoted to children and their dreams and nightmares. Particular symbols are very personal and this book provided me with a foundation to learn how to "determine" personal symbols. I believe that anyone using this book will find that they too will learn to use it in that way. During my dream interpretation work another book became useful because, animals are a large part of my life both in awake and dream time. The book I found that is SO helpful in understanding why certain animals come to us is: ANIMAL SPEAK by Ted Andrews. These two books are always by my bed. I refer to both when interpreting my dreams and synchronicities, I give both of these books 5 stars easily.

This is one of the most actionable book on Analytics I have seen in the market. Lots of specifics around scenarios which tell a layman how interplay between recency , frequency across various industries can be used to derive simple insights. One word of caution though. The RFM metrics have to be seen in the context of the business process cycle and the different rhythms of the industries they apply in. In short Jim makes the complex , simple .

I got a lot out of this book as is deals with the scientific nature of transaction and customer analysis.
