This book is scholarly but quite readable, so much so that an intelligent consumer of potential psychotherapy services would do well to read this book. There are chapters on depression, bipolar disorder, anxiety disorders, PTSD, eating disorders, schizophrenia, personality disorders, substance abuse, sexual disfunction, child and adolescent disorders, etc.
Unlike many books that advocate for a particular school of thought, "What works for whom?" is fair, scientific and useful. As a psychotherapist and a researcher, I consider it required reading for anyone who wants to understand the research behind many of the grandiose claims of symptom focused short term treatments.

This book would lend itself well to a research oriented graduate course on clinical psychology and treatment. It is also an excellent resource for writing lectures. Practicing clinicians should find it invaluable. It is concise and synthesizes an extensive body of research well (with appropriate and useful references). Selling points include specifics on clinical description, prevalence, co-morbidity, and history for each disorder covered. Reviews (and summaries) of treatment efficacy are excellent. -W. Born

The book by Roth and Fonagy is a comprehensive and balanced summary of research on psychotherapy. Principly it covers outcome studies and is organised according to DSMIV diagnostic groups. It also covers a bit of process research, particularly the research on therapeutic alliance. There is much to recomnd the book: it is accurate, comprehensive, well written and balanced. It also offeres excellent summaries and impications ections at the end of each chapter. I don't know of a better summary of psychotherapy outcome research.

In this era of our hunger for all things "reality", this book truly stands out as an inspiration of the real lives of women scientists. As written in their own words, these women really come from a variety of backgrounds and experiences. Their stories are riveting and unique. Every woman thinking about a career in science and medicine should be able to identify with at least some of the women in the book and find in them the inspiration to pursue their career dreams. These autobiographies humanize these intelligent and creative women, and demonstrate that women in science are multi-faceted and can have a career, family, and outside interests. Dr. Neilson has done an excellent job of assembling these life stories and of uniting them all together. I highly recomment the book for all women thinking of, or already immersed in, a career in scientific research.

Very inspirational book!

It has been wonderful to read "What's Past is Prologue: The Personal Stories of Women in Science at the Vanderbilt University School of Medicine" by Dr Neilson. As a woman planning to enter academic medicine currently at the end of my MD/PhD training and also a mother of 2 young children, this book was not only highly inspirational but also provided a window into the personal lives of outstanding female scientists. It makes me realize that my struggles and joys are quite universal and our paths albeit different lead to common dreams. Overall, I highly recommend this book to both women and men alike interested in academic medicine.

What's Past is Prologue is one of the most inspirational books I have read. I am a female physician in training in internal medicine and found these personal stories by my female collegues very unique and admirable. I strive to also become a female physician scientist. It was very rewarding to hear how they juggle family and their successful careers. I highly recommend this book.

"What's Past is Prologue" is a collection of brief autobiographical essays of several women physicians and scientists at Vanderbilt University's School of Medicine. The writers range from assistant faculty members to chairs of departments. It's a terrific and inspirational read for aspiring physicians and scientists, whether male or female. The authors' main themes are varied. Most discuss in depth the passion they have for science and medicine and what sparked that early in their careers. The authors that are also mothers recount how they have managed their time in order to be productive physicians and scientists while raising and connecting with their children.

I'm an MD/PhD student in the middle of grad school, and reading these essays has been a great source of enjoyment. It's like being privy to conversations with 27 of your heroes who are answering questions you'd like to ask but might feel to shy to actually do so. What drives you - what's your passion? What is your schedule like? How and when did you have children and what resources do you draw upon to maintain a family life? What do you look forward to in the future?

Overall, I highly recommend this book to young people who are considering, or are already embarked upon, careers in medicine.

Where's the Evidence is a collection of essays written by William A. Silverman, a pioneer in neonatology who is well regarded for conducting one of the most important randomized control trials in medicine. (see Pediatrics vol 102:1:2 , July 1998, Fifty Years of Pediatrics: 1948-1998).

The essays were written over the past decade for a medical audience, but their subject matter and the range of materials Silverman brings to the discussions make them useful, and important reading for a much larger public. Silverman centers the debates in medicine around the social consequences of medical practice and covers such issues as the increasing and "gross maldistribution of power bewteen patient/family and medical techocrat; the problems caused by a "confusion of goals" within medicine, and the process(es) by which medical authority is established. In so doing, he raises key questions such as, what's the new knowledge for, or, when is medicine's benevolence on behalf of patients/families misplaced. As a collection of key issues in the development and application of medical knowledge, the present volume provides a wealth of case studies which could be probed by scholars in fields such as anthropology, sociology, public policy and philospphy.

Integrity, courage, clarity, and an impressive breadth of scholarship characterize the essays and his afterthoughts. He has truly mastered the art of explaining the most complex and critical issues in medicine in terms that are understandable, and useful to the public at large. Individually essays would serve a public good as op-ed pieces in the New York Times, as a collected work they reinforce the importance of a medicine that is public spirited.

This compilation of Dr. Silverman's essays, written over the last decade for the quarterly journal Paediatric and Perinatal Epidemiology and revised for this volume, deserves the widest possible readership within and beyond the medical community. As a pioneer in neonatology and controlled clinical trials, the author brings unparalleled experience to these pieces.

The common themes addressed here include the need for (and obstacles hindering) evidence-based medicine, the unregulated application of medical technology, and the balance of power between physician and patient. The essays are pithy, scholarly, lucid, iconoclastic, and suffused with the author's humanity and humor.

Those in medical training, and their future patients, would especially benefit from early and frequent exposure to this book and the issues discussed within.

Widowing, Surviving the First Year, belongs in every church and doctor's office as a ready handout. In no nonsense style it offers a framework for dealing with the trauma of loosing a spouse. It covers the 'how tos' which bother us. How to cope, to grieve, to understand and to take the next steps to getting on with life are all covered in practical detail.

The book is sensative and supporting.

It is also a book for men who are living through the loss of a wife.

Professionally we give this book 5 stars. As a couple that have both lost partners we can only add our thanks to the many who praise this book.

This is one of the best occult books currently available to the earnest seekers of TRUTH, which is teaching a correct spiritual discernment. I call this book simply "The Spiritual Discernment and Discrimination 101." Every aspirant for an occult student ought to begin his or her studies from reading this book. It is a must have and read! It gives a painfully honest analysis of the problems that an occult student is going to face on his or her path. "There is no royal way to Wisdom and Ascension" and Manly Hall explains it well "why." If we were taught the wisdom given in this book in the "first grade" of our spiritual education we, and the world in which we live, would be in much better shape today. This book is a precious jewel given to the Wise who are willing to heed the warning. It will save you many problems and disappointments in your search for TRUTH! The message given in this book is as much in time today as it was more than 70 years ago when the book was first published.

Fans of Manly Hall or the PRS will really enjoy this guide. However, this book will speak volumes to you if you let it. Despite being written over 40 years ago, the wisdom contained within is ageless. This is a genuine guide...a roadmap of do's and dont's for those seeking a spiritual life. More than that, it allows one to delve into their own personality to determine what they really think, about life, death..everything. A fantastic, easy read, that I come back to again and again for insight.

Anyone contemplating the loose and non-dogmatic realm of any New Age regimen would be well served reading this book. This is a very important book and it will speak to you loudly if you let it. If you are embarking on a spiritual adventure with some group or guide, or have already done so, this book will enable you to evaluate the veracity and efficacy of what you might be endeavouring in. If you are looking to truly improve your soul awareness and are willing to do hard honest work, and toil through the proper non dramatic, non gimmick approaches this book will guide you. Rather than waste years and untold sums on scams and blind alleys, this book will give you a legitimate method of evaluating the various approaches you might encounter. I found very useful the list of suggested reading materials he recommends therein as well. Excellent useful advice which is well worth ten times the sales price!

Angus Maddison's The World Economy: A Millennial Perspective is highly unique because of the long historical perspective it brings to the understanding of global economic development and fluctuations. Maddison provides data on population growth, per-capita income, and gross domestic product on regional, national, and global levels for the last 1000 years. The last two centuries receive special attention. For more books on economic development go to my profile and see my Amazon Listmania "Future Studies Reading List."

The best and the brightest on Historical Statistics (I)
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2007-07-21
In the last few years I have been searching books offering a general overview of the past, and I have realized that many books entitled "History of ...whatever" only provide information about the West, the rest of the world being almost ignored.

Maddison's on world economy is different, it is truly global. It offers historical statistics of the last two thousand years and is to be read together with "The world economy: Historical Statistics " (a combined edition of both volumes is to be published on December 2007). In my opinion this is masterful work that can be savored by the professional historian and educated layperson alike, so my rate is between 5 (content) and 4 (pleasure, sometimes falling to 3, sometimes raising to 5). I highly recommend the two volumes.

Other works whose scope is as amazingly global as Maddison's and which I would suggest reading (hoping that will be of use for those looking for a broad framework to understand ourselves) are the following: 1. Agrarian cultures: "Pre-industrial societies" by Patricia Crone; 2. Government: "The History of Government" by S.E. Finer; 3. Ideas: "Ideas, a History from Fire to Freud", by Peter Watson; 4. Religion: "The Phenomenon of Religion: A Thematic Approach" by Moojan Momen; and 5. War: "War in Human Civilization" by Azar Gat.

Attempting to put numbers on past economic activity is a deeply fraught exercise, as the author freely admits.

That being said, this is a book full of useful information and striking estimates. I know of no better place to get a genuine feel for the economic history of the last millennia, but particularly the last two centuries. There is something to startle or surprise anyone within these pages. A necessary edition to the library of anyone seriously interested in history.

This book is seemingly a culmination of the painstaking works taken by Angus Maddison for decades. As I liked his previous works such as the Phases of Capitalist Development, so I like this book very much. Of course, the book contains many 'guesstimations' that are unacceptable to today's economists' rigor. This is more so when the author ventures into almost two millenia before 1820, for which he did relatively little work previously. But even here the book apparently provides reasonable figures synthesizing existing evidences with a lucid interpretation, providing illuminating starting points for future studies.

This book, commonly known as WARP, is one of dozens designed to help students through the wilderness of paper writing. Unlike the others, however, it has become something of a standard in high schools, colleges, and even elementary schools, thanks to its clear, concise, up-to-date writing, and the excellent examples it provides. The book is short enough (and cheap enough) to be used as required reading for entire classes, and is remarkably useful for a surprisingly wide range of reader/writers. It was distributed as a textbook (and set of marching orders!) to my son's sixth grade class, but its no-nonsense approach would work just as well for college students. Very impressive accomplishment, and highly recommended.

I have only used the creative writing section and the poetry writing section thus far, but both sections have saved me countless hours of research and preparation. The book was recommended by our department chair who uses it in the upper grades -- I teach 9th and 10th grade English. I cannot say enough about this book! Last summer, I was asked to teach a creative writing class for incoming high school freshmen. I panicked--until I found this manual. What a lifesaver! Filled with fabulous ideas and neatly organized into 75 lessons (I use 3 per day during 2 hour classes), this book is easy to use, and my students love it. It is challenging enough for gifted writers, but it encourages reluctant writers as well. All of them have fun. Students move through journaling, freewriting, revisions, even publishing booklets of their own poetry and prose. Solid learning; encouragement of peer editing; great progression of difficulty levels. You will not be disappointed in this book. A lot of hard work went into it--thanks to Ms. Brandvik.

As an English teacher, I had tried to institute peer review into my classes but was never successful until I read this book. Brandvik provides 75 sequential writing lesson plans that built a writing community in my classroom. My students now know how to serve as peer editiors for their fellow students.

A good portion of the book's assignments focus on narrative type writing though some space is devoted to poetry writing and word play. I was wishing for some of the lessons to focus on other modes--persuasive, expository, etc. However, after teaching a couple of units from Brandvik's book, I was able to apply her techniques to my own units. Her modeling was a good teacher!

This is one of the best titles from ACS. It may also be the only one detailing the laboratory notebooking to my best knowledge. It reveals that there is a lot more than "write down what you do" in this business.

The current notebooking situation is not great in terms of graduates getting into industry. One thing to blame is the current academic systems' lack of education int this aspect. Much of the busniess was left to the advisor and/or graduate students. But... the good old tradition? Lost!

A REAL and SERIOUS researcher in today's industrial world would benefit greatly from it. This is certaily clear to me in traditional chemical / pharmaceutical industry. The younger industry such as biotechnology has much to learn from the book too since quite a few simply neglect this critical issue. The legal departments ought to educate the employees and the management ought to enforce it. The reason simply is IP and patenting. The consequence simply is financial impact.

The principles and spirit in the book work well in the past, today and almost certainly will into the future although there are some advancements such as internet and imaging technologies.

As a technical rewriter for an international patent office in Tokyo, Japan, I came across this book sitting on my desk. It provides a thorough guide to keeping an industrial laboratory notebook. Topics discussed included the following:

* types of suitable acid-free ink and paper for laboratory notebooks
* suitable methods for storage of laboratory notebooks
* differences between academic notekeeping and industrial notekeeping
* the importance of teaching notekeeping skills, starting with the sophomore year in college
* the importance of witnesses and clearly dated and qualified notebook entries in the patent industry
* good layout of the laboratory notebook, together with examples of the same
* electronic counterparts to the laboratory notebook

The writing was clear and easy to read and follow, and included numerous examples and photographs.

Of particular note were the descriptions and examples of the critical importance of witnesses in laboratory notekeeping for patents. The author gave an example of how the testimony of a witness for a Dr. Kassel on May 6, 1938, was found to be "even stronger proof of conception than the inventor's own ... records" (p. 108).

On a related note, the author discussed the importance of continuity (diligence) in securing patents by explaining that even if it could be shown in court that one inventor had initially conceived of an idea before another, the initial inventor could still lose the patent to the later inventor if the latter showed much greater diligence in pursuing the invention.

This title shed much new light on aspects of industrial notekeeping. The only reason that I did not give this review five stars was that the chapter on the electronic notebook was outdated; it did not take into account the World Wide Web. This is understandable, considering that the title was published in 1985; nevertheless, there should be an updated edition, which does not seem to exist. However, the rest of the chapter, and the rest of the book, was sufficiently general in scope to continue to be of great use, even now. I would actually have given this book 4.5 stars if possible.

Overall, the title proved useful and easy to read, and I finished reading the entire work in just a few days. Highly recommended.

If you need to keep a lab notebook for your work you'll probably end up getting instructions like these. I picked up my copy used; I believe that the American Chemical Society has published a revised edition.

I write a notebook for personal reasons, so some of the detail about getting pages notarized and witnessed seem a bit of overkill.
