I just read the note from the lady looking for Texas Barbeque sauce in this cookbook. Back in 1965 my mom bought this book (in sections at our local grocery store) for me. She gave it to me when I graduated from high school in 1965. I still have all of the sections of the book.It is a bit "used" but it still is my favorite cookbook of all times! The orginal cover has been replaced by 2 large spiral bound notebooks. If I had to choose between all my other cookbooks and this one, I'd choose this one. I love this cookbook!

In the early sixties, this cookbook was made available through supermarket chains, one section at a time, over the course of a year. I am not certain, but if memory serves me well - "Mayfair Markets" (now out of business) might have been one of them. This is why there are twelve sections altogether. My mother collected one of these, and the whole thing runs to over fifteen hundred pages on all sorts of topics. It is truly a blast from the past, and speaks to the customs and tastes of suburbia in the early nineteen sixties period.
The book was made 'collectable' at stores, due to it's very large finished size, and is a masterpiece for any cookbook library. In it somewhere is a recipe for "Texas Barbeque Sauce" that I have wanted to find a copy of ever since the book disappeared from my fathers estate. Each month typically covered a seperate area of cooking, and each of the sections are what would amount to an entire cookbook of one kind or another in themselves- IE: Meats, Breads, Desserts, Pastries, soups, etc...
(Or so I remember it)
Sadly, most available copies may be somewhat careworn from having been put to constant use in the kitchen as the ultimate resource for any sort of dish being made at the time. These are almost fifty year old volumes.

It is unfortunate that this book does not seem to have attracted a lot of readership, because I see it as an excellent vehicle for ordinary people concerned about energy issues to get an overview of what the future may hold as far as energy alternatives.
Interestingly, the book is heavily focused on the question of how to get away from fossil fuels in order to avoid greenhouse gas driven climate change.
With the currently skyrocketing price of oil, I think the public focus on energy is beginning to shift from the climate change issue to the peak oil problem.
If I had written such a book, it would have been focused on what do we replace fossil fuels in the future, because of the fact that the demand for energy will be increasingly outstripping the available supply of fossil fuels, hence fossil fuels will gradually cease to be economically viable as the source for our large-scale energy needs.
But no matter, because both climate change and peak oil dictate that we replace fossil fuel energy sources. (I guess if one is motivated strictly by the "peak oil" phenomenon then one might be a bit more amenable to generating power from coal, which is much more abundant, but I think most peak oil advocates including myself believe that we should migrate as much as and as quickly as possible toward fuel sources that are not exhaustible resources like fossil fuels; if we relied more heavily on coal then we accelerate the day when we hit "peak coal" and we have the same problem to address once again.
One thing I particularly like about the book is that the author is forthright in stating his conclusions about his view about the potential for each energy source he mentions.
An interesting point is that he intermingles the issue of how to fuel cars with the issue of future energy sources. That is a completely reasonable thing to do, particularly since he concludes that biofuels and hydrogen are not viable future fuel sources for transportation, leaving batteries as the only remaining alternative.
His assessment along those lines is rather clearcut. I think his conclusions are liable to be largely correct, but there are a few caveats that should be mentioned:
1). Biofuels may possibly turn out to be more viable than they currently appear, if it is possible to develop crops that are able to convert solar energy a lot more efficiently than is currently the case.
2). His conclusion that batteries will be central to transportation is likely to prove true, as far as I think there is a lot more plausible path to that than there is to a hydrogen or biofuel based transportation system. But, batteries are not a slam dunk. It appears likely that there will be batteries developed within a few years that can produce a vehicle with close to the same functionality as a gas-powered automobile. However, such a battery must be able to be mass produced at reasonable cost. With Lithium batteries, for example, the question has come up whether there would be adequate supplies of Lithium to be able to build a global transportation system on batteries that use that element.
Another thing about his focus on transportation- he discusses the issue in a way that sort of assumes that the only thing we use fossil fuels for is transportation fuel. That is a reasonable approach in order to keep the book as short as it is, which I think is a real virtue, although obviously there are a lot of other applications of fossil fuels that we have to address in the future as well.
My hunch is that we will wind still have a small amount of hydrocarbons produced (as biofuels) for certain critical applications such as making plastics, air travel for rich people (most of the air travel industry is going to vanish, and we are seeing that process being in front of our very own eyes right now in the airline industry), and of course farm chemicals. Hopefully there will be enough biofuels to meet those needs.
But we definitely won't be burning caviar so we can drive our two ton sports barges down to the corner grocery to pick up a pack of corn nuts, of that I am absolutely certain.
As to the author's discussion of renewables, I thought he covered it well. There are obviously a whole lot of complications that the brevity of the book does not permit him to dwell on, but I think he made a perfectly good trade off in that regard. Since I have done some informal study of alternative energy myself, a lot of what he covered was pretty familiar to me, but the one new thing I came away from the book was his view that the ocean energy sources have potential as large-scale energy sources, although their development is in a state of infancy. I always thought they only had potential to generate a fairly modest amount of energy. This motivates me to learn more about those sources.
One he didn't mention as far as I could see was OTEC, the approach where you generate power from temperature differentials in ocean water. That certainly should have been mentioned. If that is the only fault I can find in the book, he did a pretty darn good job.
I liked his coverage of nuclear power. He didn't really explain why nuclear waste storage is not nearly as big an issue as it is made out to be, presumably once again in order to keep from making the book too lengthy, but I agree with his assessment about nuclear power.
All in all, this is an excellent book that covers alternative energy in very simply language that is suitable for anyone regardless of whether they have any background on the issue, and I think it would go a long ways toward achieving a more informed public as far as energy issues are concerned, if it somehow were able to attract a larger reading audience.
Simple and organized - excellent...

It is not only comprehensive, but also well laid-out and simple to use. It is invaluable for any translational purposes or for reading a Swahili or English Text if you happen to be a first language speaker of the alternate language.

If you are going to get one epidemiology text, this is the one to get. It is well-written, straightforward, but not dumbed-down! It covers all of the major areas of epidemiology and there are ample references to more in-depth papers on specific topics. A companion web site includes review problems, outlines, slides, and link to external references. For the beginner, it is a great introduction to the field of epidemiology. If you have read more advanced books, Epidemiology Kept Simple will help solidify concepts and help link ideas together.

This book is the best book of many that I have found for someone who is attempting to decipher the mathematical side of the social sciences. I say this particularly because the author provides useful mathematical tips and insights to variables and terms to those who are not familiar with all of their differing uses in the seperate branches of the social sciences.
Another reviewer said it best when he/she said that this book was written to help readers understand mathematics as a language. This author truly treats the understanding of mathematics as a language teacher does. The author does not fall into the usual trap that so many authors before him have done, which is to assume prior mathematical knowledge beyond algebra. This book makes mathematics far more accessible than its counterparts before it for someone seeking either a refresher course or perhaps to merely buttress their mathematical understanding.

Jeff's use of political science examples with the range of mathematical constructs makes this a particularly good book for beginning graduate political science students and undergraduate political science students who want to prepare themselves for graduate study. If you are new to political science and looking for a math refresher, at least scan through the book in the library before you adopt something else. My only regret is that the answers to sample problems are only available through a teaching edition.

I still intend to use the aid of a trained biostatistician for data evaluation; however, this book has helped me better to understand what all the tests mean. The book is easy to read and each chapter builds logically on the chapter before. I would highly recommend it to physicians who have similar needs. I see the book will be coming out in 2009 under a slightly different title? I guess that is a positive sign of the popularity of this book.

I have been trained in and have used Thought Field Therapy for many years. Before this ETFT book, I barely understood the background and theory. This book is clearly THE book on the subject. It is dense with information as well as practical methodology. It is to TFT what Francine Shapiro's book is to EMDR. I have read ETFT and continually refer to it to sharpen my practice. THIS IS A "MUST OWN" Text for anyone who wants to deepen the effectiveness of their psychotherapy practice.

Thought Field Therapy (TFT) was developed by Roger Callahan in the 1970's. This involves touching or tapping on prescribed series (algorithms) of acupuncture points that are specific for particular problems.
Prior to starting a series of these interventions, a person assesses her level of distress on a scale of "0" (not at all" to "10" (the worst I could feel at this moment as I focus on this issue). While tapping, a person will focus mentally on an affirmation. This process is repeated until the distress level is zero.
In a brief period, many people can eliminate their symptoms and transform their lives. Being trained in psychology, medicine, psychiatry and research, I was highly skeptical when I first heard of this therapy. I expected that if symptoms were rapidly eliminated, people would have them recur or would develop other symptoms - in the service of unconscious conflicts and needs. Having been an observer and active participant in these Meridian Based Therapies (MBTs) for five years, my opinions have drastically changed. I've seen hundreds of people cured of problems - major and minor - with these brief interventions.
These authors bring us an excellent summary of their variation on this system of treatment, which they call Evolving Thought Field Therapy (EvTFT). They summarize succinctly the history of TFT and explain the ways in which they have taken this further. Diepold, in particular, has pioneered new approaches that involve breathing to augment the therapeutic effects of treatment. In addition, muscle testing derived from Kinesiology is used to identify issues and attitudes that may impede or facilitate therapy.
This book is a helpful contribution to the field. It is clearly written and well organized, with illustrations to identify acupressure points and muscle testing methods, ample case examples, an excellent index, and generous references for further perusal.

The authors bring nearly 100 years's worth of clinical experience to their collaboration in this unification of many aspects of thought field therapy and body/mind/energy work. It's the first book that provides a cohesive explanation of *how* energy psychotherapy seems to work. By drawing in examples from many different ways of thinking about energy fields in human experience, the authors show how EvTFT just seems to "make sense" on many levels--intuitive, historical, spiritual and yes, even clincal.
I have had the privilege of working with the author in the entire decade-plus that he's been actively learning and integrating TFT into his practice. It has been a life-transforming experience from day one.
It is my hope that the skills taught in this book will find a wide audience among therapists in many disciplines and encourage the use of EvTFT in daily practice. EvTFT can be like magic in its effectiveness in lifting away painful, lifelong blocks in clients' lives.

Diepold, Britt, and Bender have produced a remarkable addition to the emerging literature of energy psychology. In the first part of the book they introduce the reader to the importance of understanding paradigms as they apply to psychology, and how they must inevitably shift as knowledge accumulates. They then give a solid review of the basics of the meridian system of Traditional Chinese Medicine, and the procedures of manual muscle testing to assess what is happening energetically in the body. They go on to describe the Touch and Breathe method of balancing meridians (which I have used with great success for several years)--an approach with which every practitioner of energy psychology will want to be familiar. They then present the most detailed explication of system disruption and treatment blocks that is available in the literature. They challenge the reader to understand and experiment with two additional forms of therapy localization (diagnosis)--contact-directed diagnosis using the therapist's own body, and thought-directed diagnosis. New ground is broken with the treatment approach for positive emotions which lead clients to be trapped in destructive compulsions, including addictive behaviors. This is really a break-through for a number of clinical conditions. Their section on supplemental and and modified protocols is well-presented, especially the section on the tratment of dissociative disorders. By no means a cookbook, the authors stress and explain how Evolving Thought Field Therapy is integrated into the overall practice of psychotherapy, and 25 terrific case examples are presented which effectively elucidate their position. The final chapter, Epilogue, and Afterward (by William Tiller, Ph.D., Professor Emeritus, Stanford University) present challenging and thought-provoking theories as it becomes apparent that the authors are thinking deeply and profoundly about the underpinnings of this most powerful and effective therapy tool.
This is a book that will be appreciated the most by those practitioners who already have some experience with energy psychology and are hungry for refinements in technique, applicability to a greater range of clinical conditions, and deeper understandings of what is going on with this amazing technique.

I can only add to these reviews that this edition is very small, cloth bound, and ribbon bookmarked, so it can be carried with you always, everywhere. That alone makes it worth a purchase. There is something nice about being able to carry drugstore playing cards and a source of a lifetime's worth of practice all in one pocket. If you travel or commute, this is the perfect edition to own - the binding does not feel cheap or crease, and the type is very small but very legible, not in the least blurry. If portability is of any concern to you, this is the one to buy. I carry it with me always, and it's so compact that it's never an issue. Let other people fiddle with their Blackberries or play mindless games on their cell phones - you can learn to second deal or blind shuffle and actually acquire a skill.

This book is thorough in both its theory and explanation of card manipulation. An enjoyable reading, it is a bit lengthy, but well worth it. From simple shuffling to expert three card monte, this book gives it all to anyone truly interested in studying card manipulation. Set forth to professionals and amateurs alike in 1995, it is a one of a kind in both content and style. Made to last, it is not written in common jargon and is not fancied with useless information about the latest crazes. Erdnase uses his knowledge of cards and card manipulation to create this compelling compendium.
The first is still one of the best - indispensible

Originally published over one hundred years ago in 1902, this book forever changed the way magicians viewed and practiced sleight of hand. Written by a former gambler, it introduced card sharp secrets to the magic community for the first time. Something you don't expect is that the style of the narrative is so timeless. This guy is very well educated and offers truisms that you might find yourself quoting from time to time. I have often heard a rather ridiculous claim that these "old" books are too hard to follow. The truth of the matter is that anyone who has sat down and tried these moves for more than ten minutes knows this is not true. It doesn't matter if you learn from a slick DVD or from "old" books, you can't ever get around the basic fact that a lot of this stuff takes time and practice... but, surprisingly, some of it is not difficult at all and can be picked up in very short order. Erdnase's book teaches you excellent methods that are not outdated and there are only about five well-known and obvious mistakes in the book that are pretty easy to figure out (most of them are in the bottom dealing section where the text should read the "third" finger instead of the "second" finger - trust me, you would figure it out when learning the moves). I also have the annotated issue of this book by Ortiz - excellent in that it provides photographs of the moves and enhances the original book with commentary. However, generally, there is no reason not to follow Erdnase's original instructions as outlined in this book, unless someone like Dai Vernon (who worshipped this book and had it memorized) or Paul LePaul has an improvement and even then it's sometimes just a matter of personal preference or style. And to top all this off, as of 2007, instructional DVDs taught by Wesley James (7 DVDs) and Alan Ackerman (still pending release) are on the market that walk you through the entire book step by step. What is next? Perhaps a Hollywood movie about the life of S.W. Erdnase?
By the way, another really nice version of this book is the now hard to find "facsimile" first edition issued in 2002 on the one hundredth anniversary of the original 1902 edition. That "facsimile" first edition is an exact replica of a real first edition that is perfect in all regards. The only tip off is that the word facsimile appears on the first page and that it looks brand new, but other than that it looks exactly like a real 1902 first edition that would cost $1,000 to $3,000 (only about 100 are thought to exist) if you could find one for sale. The publishers even found the exact same green cloth used for the original, but kindly updated the binding and paper used to archival quality. The "facsimile" first edition is hard to find (only 750 produced), but very nice to own if you really like this classic book.
This review, of course, is for the "bible" edition that is slightly larger in diameter than a poker-sized card and easily fits into a shirt pocket - it's about a quarter of an inch thick. The book has a semi-hard cover and a marker ribbon with gold edges that mimic a bible. Please note that the cover is not truly "leather bound"; if anything it might be some sort of hybrid-leather product that mimics leather. I find that the text font is a bit small, but I can still read it clearly - older readers might have trouble with this small font. The diagrams are large enough to easily follow - the diagrams are actually the exact same size as the original first edition, it's just the font of the commentary that is smaller to accommodate the compact size of the book. The bible edition is nicely produced and I highly recommend it.

I am brand new to functional programming and this is my 3rd book having gone through both Foundations of F# and Expert F# which details the language very well. However, I was blown away with this book. While it does have some technical elements/examples to it, I found that it helped me bridge the gaps in some topics I did not fully grasp from the other two books.
This was written prior to the F# Sept 2008 CTP and due to changes in the language, one or two examples (again, let me stress just a few) needed to be modified in order to be compatible with the changes.
I enjoyed all the topics immensely but without a background in DirectX or 3D programming, while the chapter on visualization is beautiful, it is challenging. My readings in WPF3D helped a lot in parsing what was going on here. In addition, while there is information on using Windows Forms, I wished there was a section (or two!) on WPF. However, the F# Journal (by the same author) does have a few articles on WPF which are also very excellent.
The only thing is that, sometimes, the explanations for the examples are not very thorough, and it is a bit daunting as a beginner. One such example is the Powerset from 6.4.15 (p167) which took a while to work through. As such, I made a blog post just for this detailing how to get the solution for this.
This is not a book to, per say, 'learn F#', the previous two are for that. F# for Scientsts is great if you already have the basics at hand. All in all, I HIGHLY recommend this book. It is an excellent resource/reference and in my opinion, it is one of those books you have handy -> Just in case.
Overall A+.

Being mathematically and scientifically oriented (and a fan of functional programming) I was destined to like this book.
This book shows you how to use F# in a scientific context. The other F# books show you the mechanics, this one tells you how to drive it at full speed and take the corners. Numerics, Parsing, Visualization, it's all in here.
The only two non-positive comments I can make about this book are:
- I wish the visualization chapter used WPF3D instead of DirectX
- I wish there was some tiny description for at least some of the arguments/variables used (p, q, f, n, w, etc). The reason being some of the subjects covered are non-trivial already and having to figure out the construction elements becomes time consuming.
With that said, the book is wonderful and if you end up liking it as much as I did, there's a paid subscription to a journal by the same author where you'll get bimonthly articles along the same line of this book.

I found this book to be very useful. Before reading this text I had already read portions of Expert F#, and have an extensive background with the older SML language that F# and Ocaml are related to. As someone who works in scientific computing, I have always wished for a reference that would explain how to use this family of languages in scientific contexts. This book provides an excellent discussion of this topic. The examples are familiar if you come from a scientific computing background, and it is useful to see examples framed in a mathematical or scientific context instead of the more abstract or simple examples found in texts aimed at more general audiences. I would highly recommend this book - it's a pleasure to read, and has proven to be a useful reference for me so far.
All around outstanding

I wish more books were written at this level of quality. While this book can be used by anybody that wants to get up to speed with F#, it's also well suited for use as a text book for an undergraduate course in applied math or computer science (or reference for a graduate course). It's well organized, well written, and draws from classic examples in mathematical computing.
It's not easy material, and deserves to be read slowly and perhaps a couple times - much like any sophisticated treatise on a difficult but powerful subject. Don't loose patience if you don't get it at first glance. If you enjoy this type of stuff, it's an absolutely pleasure to read - logical in flow and well articulated.
Anyway, this is a must-have book if you're doing anything with F# - or just considering it.
