Helpful Votes: 17 out of 17 total.
Review Date: 2002-11-03
Two English statisticians have compiled this list of terms, abbreviations, famous probabilists and statisticians that is accessible to experts, beginners and practitioners in all fields that use statistical methods and probability. It is very current and competitive with other dictionaries on this topic including the one that Cambidge University Press puts out. A nice feature of the handy paperback book is its low price. Published in 2002 it is the most current dictionary of its type and includes terms from computational statistics and operations research. So you will find terms like simplex methods and figures from operations research like George Dantzig in addition to famous statisticians such as R. A. Fisher and probabilists like Markov and Kolmogorov. It also contains many names of statistical societies, software packages and professional journals and their acronyms.

I browse quite a lot though, usually ending up not finding anything worth buying. However this book offered the right amount of exhaustivity and technicalities, suitable for a businessman like myself. It also contains interesting material on the history of statistics. On some occasions, I would have appreciated to have more mathematical details, e.g. re entries related to regression.

Very Well Done

Since this statistics dictionary is only middling in size, I expected to not always find the word I was looking for. But it has not failed me yet. Not only have Upton & Cook been very judicious in their choice of words, but their explanations are consistently clear and have illustrations when needed. For an undergrad who is going beyond a first-year course in statistics, this is the dictionary to get.

If you've wondered how old your home is, what it used to look like, if those stories you heard are true, this is the book for you. Start with any chapter that piques your interest -- you're sure to find useful tips and things you never thought of, like using a metal detector in your yard. I found many good strategies and I've been researching homes since 1995. Green explains sources of information and how to access them, nationwide. Her glossary explains in simple language the legal terms you're likely to encounter. An excellent general introduction to the topic.

Everyone can find interest in researching the history of past inhabitants of their house. This book gives step-by-step instructions to identify the names of past inhabitants, how to locate them or their relatives, and learn facts about their lives as well as obtain old photos showing your house in previous incarnations. One can learn about hidden mysteries ranging from hidden rooms to why in the world did they choose THAT interior decoration, etc.

For inspiration I recommend reading "If These Walls Had Ears," written by James Morgan. It is what you might write when you complete research like this.

Una explicación sociológica basada en mecanismos
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2007-05-22

Middle-range theory at its best!

Review Date: 2007-06-29
In the 1950s Merton introduced the notion of middle-range theory; theories capable of explaining specific empirical events and processes, yet built upon general explanatory principles. Hedstrom's book is the best example of this type of approach in contemporary sociology. It may not appeal to the likes of H. Gintis who wants grand and speculative theories of the evolution of human societies, but for the rest of us, this is the way to go!

Great sociological theory.

Review Date: 2006-02-16
This is one of the most interesting books on sociological theory that I have read for many years. The book builds upon the social mechanisms approach that Hedstrom, Elster, and others have developed. The book is concerned with how one can develop sociological explanations that tightly link micro mechansims and macro outcomes. Unlike so many other theory books in sociology, Hedstrom not only talks about the principles involved but he actually shows how it can be done. The book should be required reading in all theory classes in sociology.

Once Upon a Time Sociological Theory was not an Oxymoron
Helpful Votes: 8 out of 9 total.
Review Date: 2007-06-08
Once upon a time sociological theory was not an oxymoron. There were Weber and Durkheim and Simmel and Cooley and Mead and more. The was Parsons, who put it all together in a magnificent edifice that exhibited the articulation of sociology with psychology and economics. But, all that has disintegrated, and now there is no sociological theory. The smartest sociologists, Hedstrom being among them, putter around in methodology and the specification of basic building blocks. The only reason sociology remains at all is that there are sociology departments and sociological problems. There is no sociological theory.

The most cogent analysis of social interaction is presented by game theory, which is not even mentioned in this book. The most cogent analysis of culture is presented by gene-culture coevolutionary theory in biology, which is not even mentioned in this book. Why does Hedstrom think that sociology can grow its own theory independent from the other behavioral sciences, just when the other behavioral sciences are increasingly recognizing their interdependence? Why does Hedstrom not even mention socialization and the internalization of norms, which are sociology's most salient contribution to behavioral science?

Hedstrom is very smart and very cogent, but he cannot create sociological theory on his own, simply because we are in a age of consilidation of the behavioral sciences, not their individuation.

The most interesting part of this book is Hedstrom's defense of DBO (Desire, Belief, Opportunity) theory. I learned a lot from his analysis, but what he does not admit is that this is simply the rational actor model in a new suit. Indeed, in my work, I call the same theory the Beliefs, Preferences, and Constraints (BPC) model to make it more palatable to non-economists. But, it is the same theory, and a very very good one. Why does he not mention the many successes of the theory in economics and biology? Rather, he calls rational-choice theory an "alternative" to DBO theory, which is simply absurd.

Hedstrom's critique of rational choice theory (p. 60ff) is simply ignorant of the Savage axioms. The term 'rational' in decision theory means nothing more that consistency (transitivity) over the appropriate choice space. Nothing more. Nor should it mean anything more. Of course, this leaves us with a very strong theory of preferences and a very shakey theory of beliefs, but this is not a sufficient reason for attempting to distance action theory in sociology from standard decision theory.

Hedstrom makes a cogent argument for agent-based modeling, but he does not inspire us with examples of successful agent-based models from other behavioral fields. Nor does he make clear that agent-based modeling is a tool of complexity analysis. Moreover, agent-based models are tools, not theories. Where is the theory behind the models? Agent-based models are ways of solving sets of equations that cannot be solved analytically. Since there is no sociological theory, there cannot be a basic role for agent-based modeling, since there is nothing systematic to model.

Hedstrom is at his best when suggesting interesting research projects that sociologists might undertake, and by describing important tools for undertaking this research. Ignoring game theory, evolutionary theory, biological theory, and economic theory, however, is not the way to create an analytical sociology, in my estimation.

Down and out from Tucson to Wenatchee

Is the open society no more than a brief era of open spaces? West of the Mississipi a man without a society can and always has survived handily in the interstices of the system, freely availing himself of the services of major railroads, there to wander the open spaces of a civil arrangement in which he was never included. One of the strange subworlds of the Great American Economy has been the realm of that curious gremlin of the reserve army of the unemployed, the hobo and rider of the rails. If you pass by a freight yard, and wait long enough, you will see the phenomenon, briefly, as departure and arrival is not announced, and the passengers will appear from out of the bushes. Much of this is tacitly condoned due to the need for cheap labor in the agricultural circuit, from Arizona to Washington, and the lines are almost the official transportation for the labor force at some times of the year.
This work is a charming, and well documented, account of the whole history, not only of the hobo, but of the homeless in American history, and also gives an interesting chronicle of the skidrow world as it flourished and then passed away after the second world war. If you are ever unemployed, don't panic. Get west of the Mississipi, find a railroad yard, and wait. People will appear who can explain the ropes. May or may not be an open society. But there are still a lot of open spaces.

The definitive account of homelessness...
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 2002-08-28
This is by far the best and most definitive (and perhaps the only) account of homelessness from a sociological/historical perspective. No drama here, no political agenda, no sensationalism. It is a very matter of fact documentation of the rise of homelessness in this country.

It begins simply enough with defining homelessness. Originally those we call homeless today were seen as social outcasts, called vagrants, beggars, bums, vagrants or tramps. Dr. Kusmer traces the origins of these words, something we often take for granted. The use of the word 'homeless' in the public vocabulary did not reach general use until the 1980s.

The overarching theme is that these are people and as such deserve respect no matter what they're situation. Even though it is a historical account there are many personal accounts noted and one gets a good feel for the humanity presented in this book.

As folks living in this situation, for whatever the reason and whatever the definition given, waxed and waned over time, so too did the perception of the public toward them. Factors such as wars affected this population, so too factors such as economic downturns and the rise of the train. Stereotypes are dispelled and this complex and diverse topic is laid out in a well-written style not overloaded with technical jargon.

The documentation on this book is a feast. I have literally spent hours following up on many of his footnotes, especially the accounts in the New York Times from the late 1800s. Fascinating stuff grounded in history. He has a grasp of his material and gives such a broad, though thorough, sweep of the issue that it will become the seminal resource for footnotes in years to come.

This book really opened my eyes to some common misconceptions about tramps and vagrants in American history. I found it to be erudite yet accessible. It is that rare example of a highly scholarly historical study that is as compelling as the latest mass market page turner.

I would suggest that Down & Out, On the Road is a must-read for anyone who wishes to understand a fascinating, yet overlooked, piece of American social history.

I congratulate Dr. Kenneth Kusmer on this fine work. Add it to your library as soon as possible.

Impressive scholarly work on homelessness
Helpful Votes: 9 out of 9 total.
Review Date: 2002-01-21
Dr. Kenneth L. Kusmer teaches history at Temple University, and his scholarly background is very evident in this carefully researched work on the history of homelessness in the U.S. Though there have been examples of 19th- and 20th-century tramps romantically eschewing the world of work (Sherwood Anderson, James Michener, Louis L'Amour, et al.), over the past almost 150 years since the Civil War, most of the homeless did not voluntarily seek out their condition. There have been many waves of economic recession and depression, layoffs and industrial accidents which have predictably swelled the ranks of the homeless across many generations. Dr. Kusmer's book does an outstanding job of describing the different constituencies of the homeless in the U.S. over the years, up to and including the present day, where about a third are now women, half are people of color and many are children.

This book is well-documented enough to please the most exacting scholar, but so clearly written as to be very accessible to interested lay persons. There is not a huge body of literature on hoboes, and this book will greatly enhance what is currently out there. It helps to explain how our country which, though it doesn't (presumably) put a ceiling on potential economic and social growth of any given individual, consistently fails to put a floor beneath all its citizens.

The BEST dream book I have found!
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-10-28
This is the best dream dictionary I have found. I have about 25 books on dreams and this is the book I refer back to again and again when looking for a meaning that I am having trouble finding on my own. This book is different because Kevin deals with the spiritual side of dreaming instead of the simple literal side. As an example, instead of the color Blue meaning something like "You will have a loss in love" or something silly like this, the color blue in his book has a more spiritual side, and may mean the soul, higher spiritual calling, and the 5th (throat) chakra in the human body. I'm calling this up from memory here, so don't quote me exactly! Anyway, what I have found in my case is that his meanings more closely reflect my personal meanings when I am working with my dreams.

At this point, I rarely use any of the dream books anymore, but when I am really stumped, this is the book I turn to. This book was recommended to me by my Jungian dream analyst, and I have found both her book recommendations and her knowledge invaluable in my quest to know myself fully.

I had no fewer than 4 books to refer to when I first began learning to read symbols in my dreams. This is the ONE that remains to be used even now, after years of reading/journaling my dreams. It is most helpful in that it includes "actions." It is very informative with colors, numbers, chakra inf., and it includes information on dreaming basics. Including information on why we recieve dreams that include death, sex, nightmares, other significant events. There is a page devoted to children and their dreams and nightmares. Particular symbols are very personal and this book provided me with a foundation to learn how to "determine" personal symbols. I believe that anyone using this book will find that they too will learn to use it in that way. During my dream interpretation work another book became useful because, animals are a large part of my life both in awake and dream time. The book I found that is SO helpful in understanding why certain animals come to us is: ANIMAL SPEAK by Ted Andrews. These two books are always by my bed. I refer to both when interpreting my dreams and synchronicities, I give both of these books 5 stars easily.

Dynamic Modeling, Second Edition

This is an excellent book for beginning and intermediate modelers. I found it to be engaging, practical, and easy to understand. Dynamic modeling has become an essential tool to facilitate understanding developments in our increasingly complex and interdependent world, to communicate ideas across disciplinary boundaries, and to help solve problems. This book is a great place to begin. It offers a hands-on introduction to dynamic modeling.

The authors start with an easy to understand, step-by-step description of the modeling process, key principles of modeling, and general methods of modeling. This is followed-up with and numerous examples from chemistry, genetics, ecology, economics, and engineering. But this is not just a book to read. The book comes with run-time versions of the easy to learn STELLA and Madonna software as well as copies of the various models developed in each of the 37 chapters.

The authors encourage readers to build the models themselves as they work through the chapters, and then explore the dynamics by experimenting with the models. This is an active, fun way to learn. It definitely helped me to expand my systems thinking capability. Although my substantive interest is organizations, I learned a great deal by analogy from working through models of problems from other disciplines. Basic systems principles apply across disciplines, and useful insights can be gleaned from recognizing similar dynamic structures underlying different systems.

I particularly liked the instruction by example that is used throughout this book. I learned so much from this book because the reading and modeling, modeling and reading formed a positive feedback loop. The reading provided direction and engaged me in the modeling, and the modeling clarified and reinforced the concepts in the reading. Drawing from my experience with this book, I think it is ideal for those who are just getting started in dynamic modeling or have been learning for several years but want to sharpen and expand their systems thinking and modeling skills.

The book is extremely well written and is so far the best attempt by any author(s)to achieve the right mix of theory and practice in the field of system dynamics. The organization of contents of the book is unique and it highlights the potential use of system dynamics principles for modeling a variety of hydro, ecological, environmental and engineered systems. The principles of system dynamics modeling and the complexities of physical systems are clearly explained by the authors and real-world examples from a number of disciplines are provided. Modelers can benefit from the actual code/examples from the simulation modeling environment, STELLA. The book includes a CD-ROM with all the examples/models discussed in the text to enhance the learning experience of modelers.

learning to use STELLA on different problems

Review Date: 2006-01-27
The book teaches the use of a modelling program called STELLA, that can be used to simulate the behaviour of dynamical systems. You can treat the text as an extended user's manual about the capabilities of STELLA. It appears to be an easy program to learn. Its user interface hides the gory details of coupled integro-differential equations that actually model the systems.

More generally, the theory of modelling a dynamical system is developed. With a deprecating of the maths. Showing how positive and negative feedback and randomness can or should be introduced. The idea is to introduce STELLA to a broad audience, who can then perform modelling. Where otherwise they might have been put off by the amount of maths to be understood or the amount of code to be written.

Then, several chapters go into important special cases. There is a chapter on chemical models for mass action. This chapter is a little terse. No mention of molecular dynamics, which has been a very active area of simulation for decades and is highly developed.

And a chapter on genetics, where evolution is discussed. Then a chapter on different types of models of ecologies. Including, naturally, the predator-prey models. And a perhaps very topical section on how epidemics might spread. This is important in trying to understand how to contain AIDS, SARS or a new influenza.

Economic modelling is also gone into. Simulating scarcity of resources and how firms might compete.

Great blend of concept and practice

I have been involved in static data modeling as part of database design throughout my career, and because of that know very well that to really learn how to model, you have to do more than listen to lectures or read a text. This book, along with the accompanying STELLA modeling tool, is an excellent blend of concept and practice.

The book begins with a short tutorial of the STELLA tool, a run-time version of which is included. (STELLA is very easy to use, and although the math underlying it relies heavily on differential equations, the user can be completely removed from that and still model effectively.) The early chapters gradually develop an understanding of dynamic modeling by building on basic concepts. The following chapters work through models in various areas, such as genetics, economics, and ecology, and provide exposure to modeling in these disciplines, as well as introducing some very interesting aspects of models, such as chaos, randomness, and non-predictable results.

By way of introduction to modeling concepts, case studies are presented clearly and concisely. These are followed by an explanation of a basic model of the system being examined. There are always additional questions that lead to expansion of the ideas being presented, so that the reader can increase their understanding and have opportunities to practice the skills presented.

I used this book for a course in Dynamic Modeling, and found it to be great in presenting the basic concepts of dynamic modeling and in developing a heightened awareness that any system being studied is really a dynamic process. It took this understanding to the next step and showed how to model that process and how to run the model and watch the dynamics in action, while honing the skills of analyzing, refining, and looking for trends and unanticipated results. The book opened up a whole new way of viewing systems for me.

If you are studying the Edgar Cayce material and unsure as to whether it conflicts with your Christian faith, then I strongly encourage you to read this!

If you have Christian friends & family who think you have been 'misled' by the Caybe material, then I strongly encourage you to get them a copy of this book! It just might help bridge the gap between you and bring healing.

I've given copies of this book to several Christian friends. I recommend this and 'The Christian Conspiracy' by Dr. L. David Moore as the most important books for born-again Christians and Catholics to gain understanding of other points of view from within a Christian perspective.

I first read this book (in its old edition) back in 1986 or 87. It was a significant moment for me, and helped put me on a path toward a more conscious, growth-filled, and expansive appropriation of my Christian faith. I wrote a fan letter to the author, who sent a very kind reply. Some of her advice still remains with me, well over a decade later. I was delighted to see this new edition, which I think will appeal to an even broader spectrum of Christian (and non-Christian) readers who are exploring the work of Edgar Cayce.

For years I have struggled the spiritual battle inside myself of finding "Where do I belong". Feeling unfulfilled in what I had learned all my years in attending church and the people I came to know there. Finding a church where I belonged. I have long admired what I had read on Edgar Cayce. I could not understand why such mean spirited statements were made against him. And where did that leave me in what felt so right deep inside. Wisdom is Proven by the thing it does is what it says in the bible. Finally I found this book by Ms. Sparrow and I read thoughts and feelings that had crossed my mind hundreds of times. If you can relate to any of this you will want to read this book! For some time now I have been non-committed and frozen in fear of what I felt inside was wrong. I figured for years I am not alone but where were people like me? Well one of them has written a deeply moving book proclaiming love of God & Christianity and what that can be. I wish we had more literature from people like Ms. Sparrow that share their faith in this way. It touched my soul and is definitely a rare find in todays books.

Refreshing prose, easy to understand and enlightening

This is a good book on several fronts. Lynn Elwell Sparrow writes very clearly, layman to layman. She also approaches the work (and/or "Readings") of Edgar Cayce from the spiritual viewpoint of the Fundamentalist Christian. A new event, to my knowledge. This particular perspective was helpful to me, as my spiritual awakening originated in a Fundamentalist church. I imagine it will help others of the same inclination, as well.

The purpose of this book was to give relief and freedom to the Fundamentalist (or conservative) Christian that has found himself "caught between a rock and a hard place," in that they believe certain dogma and doctrine, but feel innately that there is more to it...more to be had, found, enjoyed and passed on.

Much of the author's book was spent validating Cayce's Readings relating to reincarnation. Ms. Elwell Sparrow was effective, in my opinion, in concretely defending the Reincarnationist's ability to exist without guilt within a Fundamentalist's world. It was refreshing. I know her words will be freeing to many.

I found one thing curious, however; a personal observation, nothing more. At one point in my exploration of cover to cover, I found myself sad (and a little frustrated) that the author was so bound up by conservativism and Fundamentalist dogma. Though I believe the Fundamentalist faith was (and is?) based on absolute uncontestable truths, I believe the movement in general has strayed a great deal from the purpose and mission of Christ. The more I read Ms. Elwell Sparrow, the more I wondered if she was in fact restricted in her own enlightenment by her unwillingness to let go of strident and outmoted theology.

Why must believers who have a more esoteric bent so fervently try to defend the mystical and the unexplainable by utilizing the semi one-dimensional wording contained in the Bible? That is not to say that the Bible is lacking, but let's all remember that it is a HISTORICAL TRUTH that the Bible was in fact edited at great length, sanitized, interpreted, cut and remade. The discoveries at Nag Hammadi attest to as much. Irrespective, it is a sad, frustrating truth that most Fundamentalists will only debate the Mysteries of God if the opposing viewpoint is rooted in Scripture only. For that reason alone this book is a positive source and a good read.

I'm a Catholic but don't have a problem with Edgar Cayce & reincarnation. I think this is because Cayce readings really stress the traits as a Christian I believe in...kindness, forgiveness, longsufferingness! (is that a word)?! prayer etc. I try to read the Bible everyday because for me it really is soul food...nothing compares except the Mass. Cayce's books always feel like such a comfort, though. This book, to summarize, is about getting rid of our selfishness. And it explains the Revelation. I'm on my second reading because it was rather difficult the first time through. Rather dense. Very recommended.

I'm giving this book 5 stars but if you're not into metaphysical, philosophical type of information you may not enjoy it.

The Cayce material is already esoteric enough on its own. Combine Cayce's philosophy with the already confusing Book Of Revelation and you end up with a very deep discussion.

Keep in mind the second part of the title is:

A Study Guide For Spiritualizing Body And Mind

The author is very much into the 'inner life' which involves using meditation techniques to unlock information contained in the subconscious mind.

He includes a lot of that type of information in the book (Part 2) since Cayce said the Revelation was itself a result of the apostle John going into a deep meditative state.

There is so much information in this book that I'm having a hard time summarizing the key points.

One point is Cayce related the Revelation to the human body. The seven 'churches' correspond to the 7 spiritual centers or 'chakras' in the body.

The four 'beasts' in the story are man's lower spiritual centers. Our more animalistic tendancies that must be overcome.

There's a lot of numerology in the Book Of Revelation. The numbers seven and twelve come up a lot. I think there are twelve universes.

If you're looking for dramatic revelations about who the anti Christ is and where the battle of Armeggedon will occur forget this book. For Cayce these were mainly spiritual concepts rather that actual people and events.

But yet Cayce did mention that the scriptures often have a literal, spiritual, and metaphysical interpretation and he hints in a few places that some parts of the Revelation do correspond to actual people and events.

I am finding with the Cayce material that he focused mainly on the spiritual aspects of things.

Still I recommend this book for anyone who is into meditation and similar types of searching or if you want to read an alternate interpretation for the Book Of Revelation.

Edgar Cayce was very mysterious. He provided answers to any questions that were posed to him regardless of the subject. Philosophy, science, ancient history, health, reincarnation.

We may sometimes forget that he had no noticeable way to obtain all of this information.

This book is a study guide and explanation of the mystic readings of Edgar Cacye as given to him in a sleep state by his guide. The first part gives an overview of what his readings revealed chapter by chapter through the Bible book of Revelation. After the study, the actual readings with the actual reading numbers as recorded by Cayce's secretary are listed. Those who have not studied Edgar Cacye's readings may find this book confusing, and may want to begin with "The Sleeping Profit" so they gain an understand of the readings, what the numbers represent, and how Cacye was but a vessel for mystical information to be revealed to mankind in this time and age. This book is not an easy read, and will take time to absorb the teachings. What the author does, however, is combine readings and place them in an order the reader can understand in accordance with the writings of Revelation in The Bible

This is one of the most facinating books I have read about Revelation. It is almost a step by step guide to spiritualize your mind and body. I like the way the author states this process is not only a journey of the individual but of humanity as group to undertatke. This book will be understood best by students of metaphysics 101 or those who have previous exposure to the Edgar Cayce materials. Also, there are many of the same symbols and achetypes used in Revelation that the tarot uses, so tarot devotees will enjoy this book as well.

Airforce aviation expert Scott Libis presents "Skystreak, Skyrocket & Stiletto: Douglas High-Speed X-Planes", a 184-page history and survey of Douglas X-Planes, include details of the first Mac 2 aircraft (D-558-2) and the original March 2 flight by test pilot Scott Crossfield. Libis also covers the ill-fated X-3 Stiletto program. Enhanced with more than 300 photos and illustrations (including a full color section) "Skystreak, Skyrocket & Stiletto" also features the men who flew these plans and the rocket engine technology they helped to develop. "Skystreak, Skyrocket & Stiletto" is an impressive and seminal title that is a strongly recommended, core addition to personal and academic library American Aviation History reference collections.

I found this book to be a very readable, informative account of the development and testing of the Skystreak, Skyrocket, and Stiletto. I appreciated the extent to which the author sought out and included drawings of the subjects, especially the internal arrangements and cutaways. I would have liked to have seen some detailed multi-view drawings of the subjects, but realize that may not be possible these days in a book that is as reasonably priced as this.

very good and factual information. Super information for all Railroaders looking for any information of specific roads and types of motors. The typr of references that a model railroad person would go to for factual infoemation.
