Profiles in terror is a well organized standard reference book for anyone who wants to study the subject of Middle Eastern terror.

I read a fair number of books on military history, foreign policy, current events and radical islam in the course of my work and personal interest. Most books on terrorist groups and movements either come across as laboriously-researched, dry analytical tomes or sensationalistic 'heat-of-the-moment' rush jobs where fiction and editorialization fill in the factual gaps. This book doesn't fall into either category.

From reading 'Profiles In Terror,' it is obvious that Mr. Mannes has a well-grounded understanding of the Middle Eastern and Islamist terrorist groups that he writes about. Furthermore, much of his public-sourced information is extremely well-documented and, if anything, is a great suggested reading list if you want to see the extremely fine minutiae regarding these groups. Furthermore, the information is presented clearly and in an interesting manner such that the book is useful for professionals, but not at the exclusion of the average reader's interest.

All of the 'major' groups are covered: al Qaeda, Hamas, Hezbollah, etc, but Mannes also takes the time to discuss groups that are relatively unknown to the public, such as Jemaah Islamiya, the Kurdistan Workers' Party (KDP) and Force 17, amongst others. In addition to the well-written and thorough chapter on the terrorist groups covered in the book, the author included separate resource listing for each group (extremely valuable). Mannes also lays out a very specific chronology of significant events and attacks for each group. And thankfully, unlike so many other contemporary books on current events, there is a VERY detailed index, itself 31 pages long.

This book is definitely worth picking up, whether your interest is professional or just personal curiosity.

This is a TOur De force in writing on terrorism. Many books purport to tell the 'inside' scoop on terrorist organizations, or try to give you some mammoth amount of info about each group, which is so impossible to digest, while other books try to 'balance' terrorism by showing hat 'all sides are terrorists'. But book gives you the straight dope, the who, the what and the how. From the leaders to the methods to the motives this is an insider's account. One will learn about the rise of Hamas, about the truth of Force 17 and about why George Habash is a Christian who turned to Communism. The only middling problem with this book is it cannot anticipate the terrorist of tomorrow. But it will remain the standard until the face of conflict changes.

On the back of the book, it says that it is written for the clinician, not the statistician. I would say that a biostatistician should definitely read this book before conducting any consulting or collaborations. One has to understand the clients's needs (clinician) as well as the client's audience to be a truely effective biostatistician.

A must have. When would be the next version?

Taking care of sick and injured patients requires special skills, obtained at considerable effort over many years. What about publishing research reports? Any author will tell you that completing and then publishing a research project requires an enormous amount of time and effort. The number of submitted manuscripts has increased more rapidly than the number of journals; at some of our strongest journals such as the New England Journal of Medicine, Lancet, JAMA, only about 10% of submitted papers are accepted. Clearly, a "wannabe" author needs any and every bit of help he/she can get.

Dan Byrne's attractive reasonably priced "Publishing Your Medical Research Paper" provides essential help for both the novice and the more experienced author. The book is unique in many ways. For example, some of the material was obtained from a questionnaire sent to reviewers - the best source of ideas and tips about how to submit a successful, competitive manuscript.

Both the overall big picture, and small, but important details are well covered. Several chapters focus on overall objectives. For example, chapter one summarizes ten key principles for success. Some are obvious, but easy to overlook.

"Invest ample time and money in planning."

As Dan Byrne suggests, you need to spend a lot of time thinking about your research problem and formulating a research plan before you do anything. Without a clear aim and a careful literature review, you are unlikely to succeed, or, if you do, you may simply duplicate previous work.

There is equal attention to small points, such as choice and effective use of graphics.

"You can reduce your graph on a photocopier to see how it will look. Edit the graph until it is as uncluttered and professional as possible."

Any experienced reviewer will tell you how important it is to submit a manuscript with clear writing, clear graphics, and a clear development of ideas. As the book points out, even if the idea is good, a poorly prepared, confusing manuscript is likely to be rejected simply because the reviewers and editors are unsure what the author is trying to say.

It is easy to develop a hostile attitude to reviewers and editors, especially when, after months of hard work your only reward is: "Dear___: I am sorry to inform you we are returning your manuscript entitled .... Because of tight space requirements, we are forced to reject many high quality papers such as yours...."

At such times it helps to remember that Dr. Rosalyn Yalow collected and framed all the rejection letters she received prior to eventual acceptance and publication of the paper for which she was awarded the 1977 Nobel prize in medicine. This book provides accurate, detailed information to authors so they will understand what reviewers and editors look for, and how they judge the quality of a manuscript.

The appendices, which take up about a third of the book, provide practical information to guide authors through the publication process. Having all this material in one place is a real time-saver. You will find the widely used "Uniform Requirements for Manuscripts Submitted to Biomedical Journals", a medical researcher's directory with extremely useful web sites, and the Helsinki declarations for biomedical research.

"Publishing Your Medical Research Paper" is a valuable tool that will guide researchers and authors through the entire research and publication process. Following the recommendations will greatly increase the strength of a manuscript and the chance for acceptance. One word of caution - many of the recommendations concern the early phases of research; to obtain maximum benefit from this book read it before rather than after completion of your project.

This book is an excellent and well-documented guide to the design of clinical trials, the analysis of data, and the construction of a high quality manuscript. Both the novice and the expert will derive many helpful suggestions from its content.

For a relatively short book this is an extremely comprehensive, practical, and accessible guide to case studies in education. Since reading it for my dissertation, I've referred to it several times for other projects. I've also strongly recommended it in my classes and for students conducting their theses. It gives both the hows and whys of case studies...motivational and informative.

I recommend this book for anyone with zero or nearly zero knowledge about qualitative research and case study. Even though the majority of the examples are for education field, the generic explanation is very clear. The book guided me step by step by giving bit by bit necessary information regarding the topic.
This book is an exhibit of the author's experiences in the topic as well as her mastery of the story-telling flow without trapped in informal way of writing. The author did very well in explaning "new" terms, so that novice reader does not need to struggle to understand the qualitative research and case study research jargon.
However, there are some shallow discussions on some parts, like computer tools for data management. The author, however, provided an array of further reading materials to consult.
My advice is if you confused by any other books or any description about the topic, especially about the jargon, read this book. When you finish this book, and you return to read those other books, your earlier confusion will disappear.

That is exactly what the title promises. High yield introduction to clinically applied regression methods. A marvel of a book for the subject.

I have owned this book for a couple of weeks. In that short time it has proven very useful to me.

The authors use an easy-to-follow writing style and don't get too bogged down in theoretical, statistical formulas. It is full of useful figures that illustrate the points being made. Note: although the authors rely on Stata for creating their printouts and figures, this is not a book on how to use Stata. You don't get the feeling that you have to learn Stata in order to follow along. I have found that most of the Stata diagrams are very similar to the diagrams created in SPSS, and probably SAS and R for that matter.

Although I am reading the book from beginning to end, I have already gleaned some useful information from advanced chapters, thus suggesting that it is a good reference book. For instance, I was frustrated by the lack of coverage on interpreting log transformed data (in multiple regression) in other stats books. I was pleased to discover that this book covers this issue in a clear and concise manner. I am also pleased that the authors have included a chapter on generalized linear models.

This is a very good book for people working in health care research. The authors talk to the reader and explain things in a lucid manner (I have read several stats books that do not do this, so it is a refreshing change). The authors also provide many practical examples to clarify the issues. A background in the basics of statistics is required.

A very specific book, with a lot of details for a statistitian

The authors say that they created this book to fit with a course they taught at UC San Francisco to medical students. The book is very sophisticated and a great reference source for practicing biostatisticians in industry or research. It surprises me a little that they find it effective for there non-technical audience. Although the topics are technical and many are advanced they do cover it in a conceptual way without heavy mathematics but still requiring some statistics classes as prerequisite.

Regression does not cover all the techniques of biostatistics but as the authors point out the four topics in the subtitle are among the most important. I know this from my many years of experience as a bisostatistician in the medical device and pharmaceutical industries. They use many good practical examples useing many of the common variables studies in many clinical trials where physical exams are given to record blood pressure and other vital signs and chemistry labs are done to determine cholesterol levels and other things that can be factors in various diseases. Also glucose levels are very important to monitor for diabetes trials.

In addition to the standard topics general estimating equations and generalized linear models are covered and where appropriate bootstrap confidence intervals. There is even a chapter on complex surveys a topic important when quality of life is an endpoint and survey instruments are used to measure it.

In the survival analysis chapter the Kaplan-Meier curves, log rank tests and Cox proportional hazards models are covered as expected but the authors go further to include extensions of the Cox model when the proportional hazards assumption fails. My only disappointment is that there is no coverage of actuarial life tables. At the medical device companies that I worked for it was common to get interval data on events rather than continuous data and then the Cutler-Ederer life table method is the analog for interval data to the Kaplan-Meier estimator for continuous data.

The book covers many topics but is concise as the authors claim. The authors provide a lot of examples that they work out using the statistical package Stata. The authors claim that Stata is the package of choice for biostatistics. This may be the case in academic settings but is certainly not the case in the pharmaceutical industry where SAS is used almost exclusively. I think that it would have been better to show how to write the computer code for solving these problems both in SAS and Stata. To the authors credit Stat is a very good package for their purpose and they do at times mention SAS and SPSS which are the other two major statistical packages used in industry.

All in all this is a very good book that is worth its list price. I will use it as a reference. it also contains a very nice bibliography of 9 pages.

This book covers a wide range of topics in Biostatistics, in a comprehensive, but not overwhelming way. In my opinion this book has the potential of being useful to a broad audience, from Statisticians to other professionals who do health related research.

Do not start your readings about qualitative or quantitative resreach somewhere else. This book will tell you what your supervisor did notl. Its a must a must for your research. It gives you a step by step approach on how to conduct and write up your research.

Unfamiliar terms are thoroughly explained along with a clear illustration of many potentially obscure methodologies. This book is a "must have" for anyone preparing for a research project.

Excellent introduction to both qualitative and quantitative research methods. Useful for beginning students and for those with more experience in research methods. Especially useful for reporting research. If I were teaching a methods class, I would use this book without hesitation.

John C. Cothran has compiled an impressive collection of over 1800 facts regarding African-American life and culture, spanning over the past 500 years. Broken into twelve categories consisting of art, literature, entertainment, and carrying over into science, military, and geography, it is an exhaustive historical representation of our ancestors and their achievements. It even has photographs and illustrations which makes the book even more important for studying and learning more about African-Americans.

While the concept of A SEARCH OF AFRICAN AMERICAN LIFE, ACHIEVEMENT, AND CULTURE may not be a unique one, the presentation of this book (set up in question/answer format) will be appreciated not only by educators and historians, but also by children of all ages. It can be used in trivia contests, and other fun activities, as well as a guide for history projects. What stands out for me with the book is the wealth of information and how Cothran went one step further and shared tidbits of information on famous African-Americans and happenings of their youth. I enjoyed A SEARCH OF AFRICAN AMERICAN LIFE, ACHIEVEMENT, AND CULTURE and would recommend every African-American family add this fascinating book to their collection of works by, for, and about our history and achievements.

John C. Cothran, author of A Search of African-American Life, Achievement and Culture, candidly states in the Introduction to his book, that as an African American growing up in the USA, he was unaware of significant accomplishments of African Americans.

The author indicated to me that he started his project about twenty years ago and the original idea was to create a game based on facts.
Not satisfied with this approach, he decided to write a book that would resemble the
question and answer format or the Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) used by many companies on Internet sites.
It should be mentioned and as pointed out by the author, the use of the term "African American" in the book pertains to people of African descent from North America and South America.

Divided into ten chapters, the book touches a wide spectrum of subjects, as the contributions of African Americans in the fields of the Arts, Business, Education, Entertainment, Geography, History and Civil Rights, Literature, Military History, Science, Sports, Children, and Adolescence.
It certainly is, as the author states in the Preface, a small encyclopedia in a different format.

It was an eye opener to discover that the founder of the city of Chicago was Jean Baptiste Pointe Du Sable (c.1745-1818), who was an African American, and who spent his youth in Haiti.
Did you know that W.C. Handy was considered the "Father of the Blues?" He taught music at the Alabama A&M College in Normal Alabama in 1900. He left because the college emphasized music he considered inferior. Two of his compositions were "Memphis Blues" and "St. Louis Blues."
Whose name means "Ethiopian" In Greek, and was known for his fables and children's stories? I will leave that one for you to find out from the book.

In the world of Science we are informed that it was an African American slave in 1721 who described how he was inoculated against smallpox using an African method of inoculation. Cotton Mather began to use this procedure in America, and it was used to protect soldiers of the Revolutionary War-later adopted by the British.

What a Book!!! This unusual book is sometimes enduring to read, but all the profound contents are unexpected and bewildering! I got this fantastic book after reading the Da Vinchi Code and The Secret .There is no doubt that Secret Societies Exposed deals with accurate esoteric information compared to other fictional story tellers. The Author, contrary to other writers was actually initiated in these amazing Secret Societies. I cant understand why Hollywood hasn't made a movie out of this extraordinary book!! I highly recommended to all.

The book not only covers the historical perspective for many secret "but well known" societies, but how they still exist in our modern society, and what goes on behind their closed doors. Highly recommended, not only for those interested in the esoteric, but conspiracy theorists as well. There's something here for everyone.

This book is "awesome" reveals all the true secrets that the Davinchi Code lacks! It's non-fictional and full of extraordinary revelations. Some minor errors in the editing, yet the Author conveys the secrets of Freemasonry, Rosicrucians, Knight Templars and many hidden Secret Societies. Highly recommended!!

This book is specially helpful, when you have sick relative or love ones. No one clearly understand "Death", but this book has very detailed description about the death and where do we go after death, and the trip to Egyptian is a great read.

Whoever studies the subject of "Death" should read this book as reference. I was referred by my professor to get this one. It is a chilling read, and yet very clear. No confusion about the "Death," and it will help you to be ready about afterlife, it is nothing horrible about death but a way of how the universe works.
I like the part the most: when author describes the "Dark angels and the looks of the 'God of the Death.'" And the "death" is not the end, but beginning of another journey.

A superb suspense book that takes us on a whirlwind chase to an astounding finish. I felt propelled by the incredible pacing, the lure of the secrets at its core, and author sheer storytelling power.

If you want to know these secrets you can find the information elsewhere through research, but theres no need if you have this book, you will end up coming to the same conlusions, and it is awesome to find out what happens step by step each day.

"The Secrets of Death" rattles you to the bone. A week after I finished reading it, I still woke up at three in the morning wondering: What if...I am not prepared?" Reading this book "Time" seems do not exist, the pages practically turn themselves.

What inspired the author: his father passed away, due to love of father-son relationship, author used his paranormal abilities (astral projection, remote viewing and time travel, etc) followed his father step by step from the moment of death... all the way to his father crossed over to another side. It is a best read since the uncharismatic "Book of the Dead" from Tibet. This book also reveals many secrets in the universe like the book stated (under the Amazon customer -photo share)... EYE OPENING. Author is able to tell exactly where those dimensions are in the space. Within this book, author told us where exactly- the Aliens live... they know where is the Earth, and now we know where to find them, they are no longer a myth.

What amazes me: In order to find out more about the death, author took a trip to Egypt to study the "Book of the Dead" (Egyptian version), and found many shocking secrets. "Death" is a journey, all human have to face... especially our own journey, you want to be prepared and not to make mistakes. Wrong methods, you could destroy your own soul. Or worst... your soul could be trapped FOREVER. What a very good and virtuoso read!

Great book. Highly recommended for students of education and of psychology. Chapters range from academic treatises offering the most cutting-edge research (Bandura, Zimmerman, Schunk chapters) to practical and reader-friendly essays sure to be of interest to teachers and parents (Pajares, Caprara chapters). As other reviewers have noted, the Guide for Constructing Self-Efficacy Scales should be of great interest to researchers, particularly doctoral students interested in conducting studies of self-efficacy.

As a researcher in the area of academic motivation, and a psychologist who works with adolescents on a regular basis, I found this book very helpful. Chapters are lucid and grounded in the most current research. Fred has done an excellent job of cataloging a wide range of shortwave receivers from the early WWII "boat anchors" up through the modern integrated-circuit PLL synthesized high performance radios of the 1990s. He not only covers the usual radios such as Collins, Drake and National but also the more obscure like the beautiful Gelosos from Italy (I DROOLED over those in catalogs in the '50s).

I guarantee you this book will raise your appreciation for the radios created by the gifted engineers (and the "dogs" created by some NOT so gifted ones) - these wonderful devices not only entertain and educate us but help save lives at sea and keep our conuntries safe.

The Shortwave Receivers Past & Present: Communications Receivers 1942-1997 is an excellent resource book for collectors and those interested in used radios. There are pictures specs and evaluations of hundreds for the shortwave radios in this era.If you are in the market for a used receiver or a collector this is an invaluable resource. Also provided is a realistic pricing of the true value of each receiver as well as a 1 to 5 star evaluation based on the author's many years in the hobby.

If you do not already have this book, and have avid interest in communications receivers, shame on you. You have no right to gripe if you are in the dark without the info. Fred needs to come out with a new edition soon. A bargain at the price. A must have, what else is there to say?

Yes, this is a catalog of base receivers, 1945-now. Osterman provides many useful informations, and if it may be true that some informations may not be useful to an european reader (e.g. the 'used' prices), you wil not find elsewhere a so comprehensive guide. Another book will be dedicated to portable sw radios. Osterman is not God, so many data are provided by the readers: it's the way the informations flow in the scientific communities, why not here? If you are an european reader, and you know something Osterman does not, write him. I've done so, and a new chapter in this edition was added with the informations I retrieved.
