I have great interest in the troublesome years of the War between the States, but have lacked insight into the mind bent of those who would play great roles in that battle torn period. Mr. Grierson whos own relation ,General Grierson, played a not insignificant role in the proceedings, has given me that much longed for insight. His ability to discern the underlying currents of American religious leaders striving to develop their own religion in a new nation while still clinging to their long entrenched stoicism influenced by the great religions of Europe, the ever changing developing political forces and the common mind of the common people is uneqauled by any other author in my mind. Truly a must read for anyone interested in that great conflict among people belabored by slavery and the role government should or should not have played in its abolishment.

I have had this book since I was a child. I read it again and again. The book details the story of Lincoln's life while integrating the theme of respect. It is a perfect children's biography of his life. I have used it in the classroom to teach about Abe. The illustrations are wonderful. It is a very good book and I highly recommend it to everyone.

Power struggle in old New Mexico

Business disputes and partisan politics were the biggest factors leading to the so-called Lincoln County War during the 1870s. Greedy mercantilists who had many of the citizens of Lincoln County, NM, in debt to them and a cadre of politicians in Santa Fe behind them got into a land dispute with cattle kings mainly from the panhandle of Texas who began using the Pecos Valley as a place to stock their cattle, using the preemption laws to acquire land rights. Factions developed behind the small ranchers and mercantilists (lead by the likes of Lawrence G. Murphy, James J. Dolan, and James H. Riley) on one side and cattle barons (most notably John Chisum, John Turnstall, and Alexander A. McSween) on the other. Partisan politics in Santa Fe and in the law enforcement agencies prevented violence from erupting and then from being quelled. Soon cattle were being stolen, power was being threatened, rights were being violated, and finally men began to be shot and killed. Billy the Kid figured into the "war" in this last capacity, and it wasn't until his death in 1881 that Governor Lew Wallace (author of the novel BEN HUR) declared peace in the county.
William Keleher's account of all this is a good one, though superseded now by more recent studies. He cites often contemporary newspaper reports and stories of the leading events, and gives detailed biographical "profiles" of all the principal actors in this drama. Lincoln County, a huge expanse of land at the time (much pared down today), had a reputation for violence before, during, and even after the "war" was fought. Billy the Kid emerged as the biggest legendary figure, though in reality he was a minor player. Keleher's book is packed with information and first-hand reports and is a prime source for anyone interested in exploring this period in Western history.

Awakening from Myths and Fairy Tales

This is an excellent book for women who are committed to Christian faith but feel increasingly invisible, lonely, and dissatisfied by a patriarchal church. The book is written by 21 lay women who courageously and generously share their personal struggles "of walking in the worlds of home and work, society and church, relationships and independence, the inner world and the outer world". These authors examine the myths and fairy tales women have internalized. They demonstrate that for women to deepen our spiritual growth, we have to ask questions, go through the painful process of sorting and shedding, and come to more authentic ways of living and being. I use this book for the women's counseling class I teach and the women's groups I lead. The book helps women to feel less isolated knowing that other women are going through similar journeys.

Nancy Schleifer has done a remarkable job of combining historical fiction with romance. This novel depicts an era in history that may be well documented, but reveals facts that are not well known. You will be fascinated with the characters surrounding the historical events and be totally absorbed in their lives. While this novel may be about Mary Lincoln, it is mostly about a love story. The author's unique descriptive style will leave you with lasting images of a place in time that needed to be revisited.

Anthony Paul's book covers all styles of water gardens with accompanying photos and plans. Construction techniques are clearly explained, accompanied by line drawings. Plants to use for stocking the water garden appear in a separate section, as well as a glossary of terms. While most of the gardens featured were designed by landscape professionals, many of the ideas can be extracted and incorporated into one's garden.

I had been waiting for the release of this book and was so excited when I finally purchased it. I think that it is a must have for your child's library if you are interested in promoting your child's sense of awareness about important issue pertaining to basic human rights. The one thing I would note is that I don't think it necessarily 'speaks' to 5 year olds. I think you might have to simplify it a bit more for audiences that young. However, I think its appropriate for audiences as mature as teenagers and adults. The illustrations are really entertaining. I think they should be made into wall prints. I would reccomend this. Especially considering that all proceeds go to Amnesty International.
