The Mystic Chords of Memory
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2005-08-26
An excellent book containing many of the best writings of our country's political heritage. Professor Gienapp does what is needed in this type of introductory book: He has chosen text wisely and started each selection of Abraham Lincoln's work with a short but helpful introduction.

There is a reason Lincoln is our greatest president. This book is perfect for one who would like to gain a direct understanding into this fact.

Early writes of three representative and important figures in the Black movement of the 60's. Mohammed Ali, Sammy Davis,Jr., and Cecil Moore. Each man represented a different way of responding to the racism around him. Easy and straight-forward, Early's discussion of the

A Christmas gift from my 9 and 11 year old daughters!

Three Wise Women, in its simplicity and color, retells the story of the visit by wise persons to the baby Jesus and the bringing of gifts that are human & practical...The gift of bread, of storytelling, and love shared! I am especially touched by this book because my 9 and 11 year old daughters found this book in our local bookstore and decided it was the perfect gift for their mother who is going on sabbatical. They recognized within its short reading that the women of the story are on a shared journey of the spirit. The illustrations, done in beautiful dark mystical colors, also lead you into this journeying. I am always looking for books for my girls and I to read that have strong female characters that look at life wholistically. Three Wise Women continues that collection for us. We also have a collection of Christmas books that have a home under the tree each year. The tradition of pulling them out each year and rereading the memories has made the stories become part of our collected memories of the season! Thanks for an excellent addition!

Excellent story: a mixed race family without a "race" focus
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 1997-12-14
A lovely book that depicts a normal day of a little girl who is at home in bed with the flu. Her family just happens to be mixed race and this is portrayed normally with no focus on race at all. This book is a favourite of my children: the little girl in the story who is not feeling well keeps thinking that the footsteps she is hearing, are those of her mother returning home. The great anticipation that all children feel when waiting for a parent's arrival will make this book a favorite of children everywhere.

Believable story about friendship and loyalty
Helpful Votes: 6 out of 6 total.
Review Date: 2001-02-01
Edward Ardizzone had the knack of writing and illustrating wonderfully satisfying adventure stories for young children. You can read this story to a five year old, and both of you will interested - even enthralled. There is a quietude to his illustrations that my children loved. Pen and ink with watercolor washes, they convey the mood of an English seacoast town, the moods of this story's many characters, and allow room for the viewers' moods and varied reactions to the text. Children don't so much gawk at his drawings as enter them - safely.

In this story, despite wearing a life belt, a little girl nearly drowns, and is rescued by the boys Tim and Ginger. They carry her limp body into Tim's house where "Tim's mother put her to bed with lots of hot water bottles and blankets." No one knows who she might be. The doctor is called, and her convalescence begins. Her recovery is rocky and it is that process, with plenty of drama, that forms the rest of the story.

Ardizzone's messages are in favor of friendship and sticking out one's neck for others. There are some disturbing but manageable events in the story that parents might want to talk about with children. (Charlotte's amnesia; the absence of her parents; Tim's treatment at school - for writing to Charlotte, later - whom he misses.)

Another wonderful children's book by Edward Ardizzone.

Seaworthy excitement and drama
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2001-02-01
Edward Ardizzone is skilled at describing children's adventures that are harrowing, exciting, and original. Tim is a nice boy and a loyal friend. He lives a comforting, cozy English daily life in a seacost town - and also has amazing adventures. Modern kids aren't awfully familiar with life at sea, and certainly no one my children knew could set out into the world in order to search for a friend who had left home. Ardizzone's locales and situations manage to seem exotic, yet totally reasonable. We were pulled into this story. The plot is complex enough, the action is convincing and, as usual with Ardizzone, the denouement is pleasing without being Milquetoast. The story can withstand repeated readings, which is a nice plus, since your child might want to hear it repeatedly. In addition the pen and ink drawings, with watercolor wash, are a constant treat for adults and kids.

As a mom of boys, I find that more literature appeals to girls...this story has a boy as the protagonist and lots of action. My grade school boys liked it as much as my girls did.
