The Message Behind the Gettysburg Address.
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2004-02-14
This little book not only talks about Lincoln's Gettysburg Address, but gives some background behind it as well. The first part of the book deals with the Civil War and slavery. Some background is given about the Battle of Gettysburg. Then some information concerning the ceremony for the dedication of the cemetary and battlefield and how President Lincoln was invited. The book tries to debunk some myths concerning Lincoln and the Gettysburg Address (e.g. that Lincoln didn't spend any time thinking and writing about it). It concludes with a look at the impact that three-minute speech had. I enjoyed reading this book and found it both fun and educational. I had heard most of the story before, but it's nice to be reminded of it. This is a good book for students in the 2nd-5th grades. It's fairly easy to read and gives a solid background and history about the Gettysburg Address.

Excellent story: a mixed race family without a "race" focus
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 1997-12-14
A lovely book that depicts a normal day of a little girl who is at home in bed with the flu. Her family just happens to be mixed race and this is portrayed normally with no focus on race at all. This book is a favourite of my children: the little girl in the story who is not feeling well keeps thinking that the footsteps she is hearing, are those of her mother returning home. The great anticipation that all children feel when waiting for a parent's arrival will make this book a favorite of children everywhere.

Believable story about friendship and loyalty
Helpful Votes: 7 out of 7 total.

Edward Ardizzone had the knack of writing and illustrating wonderfully satisfying adventure stories for young children. You can read this story to a five year old, and both of you will interested - even enthralled. There is a quietude to his illustrations that my children loved. Pen and ink with watercolor washes, they convey the mood of an English seacoast town, the moods of this story's many characters, and allow room for the viewers' moods and varied reactions to the text. Children don't so much gawk at his drawings as enter them - safely.

In this story, despite wearing a life belt, a little girl nearly drowns, and is rescued by the boys Tim and Ginger. They carry her limp body into Tim's house where "Tim's mother put her to bed with lots of hot water bottles and blankets." No one knows who she might be. The doctor is called, and her convalescence begins. Her recovery is rocky and it is that process, with plenty of drama, that forms the rest of the story.

Ardizzone's messages are in favor of friendship and sticking out one's neck for others. There are some disturbing but manageable events in the story that parents might want to talk about with children. (Charlotte's amnesia; the absence of her parents; Tim's treatment at school - for writing to Charlotte, later - whom he misses.)

Another wonderful children's book by Edward Ardizzone.

Seaworthy excitement and drama

Edward Ardizzone is skilled at describing children's adventures that are harrowing, exciting, and original. Tim is a nice boy and a loyal friend. He lives a comforting, cozy English daily life in a seacost town - and also has amazing adventures. Modern kids aren't awfully familiar with life at sea, and certainly no one my children knew could set out into the world in order to search for a friend who had left home. Ardizzone's locales and situations manage to seem exotic, yet totally reasonable. We were pulled into this story. The plot is complex enough, the action is convincing and, as usual with Ardizzone, the denouement is pleasing without being Milquetoast. The story can withstand repeated readings, which is a nice plus, since your child might want to hear it repeatedly. In addition the pen and ink drawings, with watercolor wash, are a constant treat for adults and kids.

this beautiful book seeks to tell a lesson of loyalty and trust..when a lie is more honest than the truth and when all things have a time and place. This story is surprising in its lesson and one truly wonderful book. The illustrations are strong powerful and loving,an odd combination. This is a book well worth a read. A VERY FUNNY BOOK WRITTEN BY 120 FARM WOMEN!
Helpful Votes: 6 out of 6 total.
Review Date: 2000-12-27
Eileen Mears has edited a great "tell it like it is" book about farm life as described by farm ladies all across America. Her book, titled A TREASURY OF FARM WOMEN'S HUMOR (1994) packs about 120 essays and short stories into 283 pages.

Living on a farm (I have lived on a 50 acre farm in Maryland for the past seven years) has its delightful side, but it is not easy for anyone. The life of farm ladies has gone largely unsung or adequately described, and has seldom been a source of humor, with the possible exception of mercifully departed "farmer's daughter" traveling salesmen's jokes, now justifably out of fashion.

This good spirited book is a breath of fresh air, and should be considered a "must read" for anyone who ever ruminated about "getting away from it all." The essays the 120 ladies who contributed to A TREASURY OF FARM WOMEN'S HUMOR have given us provides wothwhile insight into what REALLY awaits people who give up city and suburban life for life in the sticks. It's not only funny, it's informative in important ways.

The frustrations of farm life are many, and the essays in this book describe ways farm people deal which such frustrations, using imagination, invention, and on occasion, eccentricity.

It's hard for farm ladies to stay ladylike when they are called upon to feed hogs and chickens, and they say so, somehow without really complaining, God bless them.

Dealing with farm husbands (farmers) is a frequent topic of discussion and observation in this book. Farmers are self-employed people who work out of their homes, and co-habiting with anyone in such a situation is not easy. Beyond the humor of the essays provided, the particulars and dilemmas of such co-habitation are pointed up. Farm life has a lot of freedom, but it also has a lot of solitude and headaches. The neighbors might be available and willing to give you the shirt off their backs, but the neighbors also have their own problems, and live a good distance away in addition, even close neighbors.

This is a terrific little book. It tells it like it is about farm living, and keeps its chin up while accomplishing its purpose of imparting truth and wisdom. It offers valuable information about farm life non-farm people can never know about without a book like this to lay things bare for them.

Get it and read it. You'll be doing yourself a favor.

Dad loves it!!!! And so do I
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 2004-02-19
When I bought this book for my 92 year old dad, Sis muttered, "He'll hate it! And he'll be so-o-o-o angry that you bought him a book, especially an old-geezer-book." Three days later Dad has read completely through the thing and is running up a BIG long distance bill calling all his pals and cousins to share the jokes, stories, humor, and chuckles. Every page is chock full of some of the world's best and most positive humor about the pitfalls and pleasures of aging. True, some of these jokes are more than a century old, but that makes them even more appreciated by folks who detect echoes of the language from their youth. And, of course, I've read most of this book too -- with great enjoyment. It's the kind of collection of short bits you can dip into for a quick chuckle or curl up with for an hour of quiet smiling. I highly recommend it if you haven't already read it. As for Dad, this afternoon he asked me to order some extra copies for him to send to friends. There is no greater compliment than that from a man who "doesn't care much for books".
