This is my 6th year to use one of the wonderful hardcover diaries from Frances Lincoln in England and I love them. They make a great combination appointment book/ journal/ scrapbook! I keep all of my appointments, mileage, ticket stubs, etc. in it. There's plenty of room to make notes each day of the week and the printed images are fantastic.

I am Balinese, have a restaurant and love food.

Rice is the most important food in Southeast Asia. It is the basis of all of our dishes and in Bali is regarded as sacred.

The recipes in this book are excellent.

The writing style is clear and there are beautiful line drawings.

Particularly interesting is a long introductory survey of rice throughout the world, including a number of myths, by Sri Owen's husband, Roger Owen.

I have no hesitation in recommending this book.

The River Thames has always been the fascinating waterway that connects disparate sections of England. With photographs and text, "The River Thames Revisited" provides an in-depth journey through the past and present of the countryside along the Thames from its beginnings in the Cotswolds to the east side of London. Photographs taken in the 19th century by Henry Taunt, along with his descriptions and comments are juxtaposed with contemporary photos and text. A book that any Anglophile or simply tourist will treasure.

All Roads Lead to Rome!
Helpful Votes: 6 out of 6 total.
Review Date: 2005-12-14
For the adventurer who loves the history of ancient Rome and admires the architectural and engineering feats of that great civilization, this rather small but informational tightly packed book will come as a welcome insight. Author and photographer John Heseltine has studied the historic major roads to Rome, photographed the places through which they passed and recreate history with the comments on the placements of the sites and the reasons we postulate the Romans chose them.

Among the most famous of these antique but extant roads here discussed are the Via Appia, Via Cassia, Via Flamina, and Via Aurelia, each named after an emperor and each leading into Rome through a different atmosphere and out to a different destination. The manner in which these roads connected Rome with the known world is discussed with authority, but the interesting facet is the way Heseltine shows the current environs where these roads exist. This is living history, beautifully captured in Heseltine's photographs and enhanced by Colin Ford's Introductory notes.

Filled with both black and white and toned photographs this book is a journey through history that is fascinating in content and illuminating in style! A definite must for those who love Italy and things Italian. Recommended. Grady Harp, December 05

One of the rock gardening classics

I knew I was on to something when this title kept cropping up in gardening articles and in other gardening books. Author H. Lincoln Foster is a premier authority on how to build a rock garden. He lists plants he has tried with great success and those with which he has experienced failure. Written in a comfortable conversational style and illustrated by his wife, Laura Louise Foster. A quote from the dust jacket: "The heart of the book is an alphabetical descriptive catalogue of more than 400 genera, comprising over 1900 individual plants, with cultural directions for each. The range runs from spring-flowering bulbs to autumn asters, from ground covers to the rarest of alpine treasure, from creeping herbs to broad-leaved evergreens and dwarf trees, from favorite perennial standbys to suitable ferns and the most pleasing of wildflowers."

Down-to-earth, practical advice on gardening
Helpful Votes: 20 out of 20 total.
Review Date: 1998-07-21
Although this book is titled "Rock Gardening", it has great appeal to all gardeners. It includes introductory information on how to create rock, bog and woodland gardens, how to propagate plants, maintenance, etc. But the best part is the comprehensive plant descriptions, with practical advice on their cultural requirements, difficulty and propagation. Although there are no color pictures, I find this is the book I rely upon most for accurate information on lesser known rock garden and woodland plants.

The Rock Star
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2001-12-12
"The Rock Star" is about a boy about the age of 16, that lives in Hammerton, California. There is not much to Hammerton, just one school and some residential areas. The boyýs name is Tim Anderson who plays the lead guitar for his band of four high school students and friends called the silver sunshine. One day Tim and his best friend Charlie go to the local music and candy store downtown and they see a poster for the national battle of the bands concert coming up. The poster explained that the band who wins the contest gets a contract to Wolf Records. Tim Anderson and his boys start practicing for this contest, but, there is only one problem. Tim is not ver estute at math, and he is having major trouble trying to pass it, and his father took his guitar away. Timýs father then gave him a lesson on why entering the music world is soo bad, and what it can do to you. Tim had to have his guitar, so he steels it and takes it with him to the area concert that night. He and his band play many numbers, and the crowd loves them. They end up getting first place. There is a man there named Hary Jurgan who worked for Wolf Records, who said after they finished that Tim was very good and if he ever was in New York to give him a call and maybe he would do something for him. Tim was very excited, though when time got home his parents found out that he was in the concert playing his guitar, so they grounded him. Tim sad and distressed ran away from home. He met people that tried to kill him and people that helped him. His destination was New York. He lost his guitar and suitcase, so he had to buy a cheap guitar with the 60 dollars he ran away from home with. When he gets to New York he gets directions to the Wolf Records company building, then goes there. Harry Jurgan bearly remembers him, but he hooks him up with a band called the sound system, well, things started out not looking so good. Tim was running out of money and Harry was changing their music and Tim was getting tired of it so he was about to leave, when his dad showed up. They talked for a while and Tim found out that Charlie told his dad where he was. In this book Tim realized that the music world was full of dirty tricks and surprises, and he promised his dad he would never go down that road again. The theme of this book, was to think over something before you do it. Tim didnýt do that. Timýs dad was the good guy keeping him back, Harry Jurgan was the bad guy trying to lead him astray, and Tim was in the middle tryig to decide his future. He made a bad decisoin, but corrected himself in the end. The author could have let Tim Anderson become famous and never have any flaws in his life, but he didn't. Just because there is the simple fact that evil is always there to corrupt people like Tim Anderson. We all know that evil can be within to. Tim Anderson had had enough being grounded and couldn't help himself to talke his guitar and leave his home. The evil within Tim was held in to long, and he learned his lesson.
