I've studied Lincoln for nearly twenty years now. This tape/book is one of the best I've read/listened to. It touches on many topics, like Courage, Ethics, Brevity, Honesty and many more. I think it should be required reading in high school. The study of Lincoln should be required before anyone can become a politician or public servant of any kind.

A Gem!

I purchased this book at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C. and have relished the quotes and tidbits from Lincoln's life. Lincoln's attitude on everything from the importance of study, communication, focus, diligence, hard work, compassion, & justice ought to be read, remembered, and practiced. I marked many of the pages from this book and will refer to it frequently!

A Year's Worth of Inspiration...

There have been a small number of books published which attempt to collect in dictionary form the more noted words and remarks of Abraham Lincoln. Archer H. Shaw did "The Lincoln Encyclopedia" in 1950; Caroline Thomas Harnsberger collected "The Lincoln Treasury" in 1950; Ralph B. Winn wrote "A Concise Lincoln Dictionary" in 1959; Fred A. Kerner assembled "A Treasury of Lincoln Quotations" in 1965, reprinted in 1996; and Gabor S. Boritt published "Of the People, By the People, For the People" in 1996.

All of those volumes are most helpful in locating a Lincoln quotation, and Don E. and Virginia Fehrenbacher have compiled "The Recollected Words of Abraham Lincoln" (1996). Of course, this latter study selects the more important spoken words of Lincoln as recalled by listeners who heard them.

However, Gene Griessman has put together an entirely different publication. Although it often quotes Lincoln, the theme is actually to inspire and motivate its readers to make an attempt to imitate the immortal Sixteenth President. In this, Prof. Griessman has done a superb job. His book is outstanding. Furthermore, he has identified the sources for the quotes utilized in each small chapter. All fifty-two units are named after one of Lincoln's noteworthy traits, such as "Determination," "Courage," "Honesty," etc. Not only does Griessman give us Lincoln quotes, but he also weaves each one into a little jewel of an essay on that particular subject. If a reader peruses a chapter a week, he or she will have a year's worth of inspiration.

In addition, this small volume contains "Biographical Notes" on the main figures cited and also a Bibliography of the sources quoted. Dr. Griessman has utilized his background in speaking and teaching the fine art of motivation to write this particular book. He also impersonates Abraham Lincoln for large audiences and has authored numerous books and articles.

It's clear to the readers of this book that Lincolns difficult time in his early years provided him with his remarkable attitude to forge the ideas in this book. His thinking is clear and relevant and timely. It is helpful for the reader to keep in mind Lincoln probably refered to these pages many times throughout his life to remind himself of the correct choices to make. I think this book belongs in everyones library!

Heard the taped version of Gene Griessman's THE WORDS
LINCOLN LIVED BY . . . this is a short but moving
compilation of quotations, followed by insightful commentary
that provides historical context.

In some respects, I wish I had read this . . . there was
much that I wish I could have revisited . . . as it was, I
kept pulling off the side of the road to jot down such
items as the following (so as to be able to share it):

[on diligence] "Half finished work generally proves to be
work lost." No other principle comes closer to accounting
for success than diligence.

[on tenacity] "I expect to maintain this contest until
successful or until I die or am conquered or until my term
expires or until Congress or the country removes me." Lincoln
believed that sticking to a decision once made would
strengthen the individual.

[on conviction] "The world shall know that I will keep my
word to friends and enemies come what will."

[on friendship] "The better part of one's life comes out of
friendships." Lincoln knew how to make and keep them.
He enjoyed companionship and knew how to attract
people.

Warren Bull's "Abraham Lincoln For the Defense" takes the reader to another time and place in our past history. Once you start reading about the actual murder and the trial that ensued, you will not be able to put the book down . One can feel/sense the push from the towns people for satisfaction and vengence. It was interesting to see how society has not changed all that much. So many people push to blame and accuse while not all the facts are brought out. Mr. Lincoln would not relent until he was sure of a fair tail. This was a great book because of the suspense it created and the escape into another time in our history. If you love murder mysteries, this is a must read!

My book club read this and it generated quite a discussion about how the English language has evolved since Lincoln's time. Older and younger people both had opinions. Some people liked the romance, some liked the suspense and we all enjoyed the Lincoln stories and jokes. I especially liked it that the author included the original letters written by Lincoln that the mystery was based upon.

This book brings alive a true story involving Abraham Lincoln as a young lawyer. Warren Bull puts you in close contact with the people and the social attitudes of 1841. You will find yourself smiling, and maybe a laugh, at the humor that is throughout the book.
Warren Bull shows the reader how the law was perilous at times. The story unfolds in a way that keeps the reader in suspense trying to anticipate what will happen next. I couldn't stop reading it and would recommend it to anyone who likes mystery or history.

Warren Bull's "Abraham Lincoln For the Defense" is an excellent book to pick up and read when you want that "great escape." The descriptive narratives pull the reader back in time and create an environment that makes one feel as if he or she is living in 1841. There is a cast of characters whose actions illict a wide range of emotions in the reader, from admiration to disgust. And the story is captivating and moves quickly, particularly after the opening events take place.

This trial is unlike any that would happen today because of the speed at which it moves. Part of the thrill is the sense of hasty vengeance that the townspeople encourage in their actions and words, making a "fair trial" quite a challenge for Lincoln and his defendants. Here is evidence of society making quick judgements and demonstrating only too human desire to make "right" from "wrong."

I enjoy books that create suspense, envelope the reader in another time and place, and generate unexepcted consideration of other points of view. Yet this book also contributes to a historic body of knowledge. Through a very pleasant mixture of fact and fiction, Warren Bull has created such a book, and I think readers will enjoy taking this step backwards in time and reflect on the ways human being have changed and yet have not changed at all. An additional plus are the reproductions of documents written by Lincoln and included as optional readings in the Appendix. I enjoyed reading Lincoln's take on the events of the trial after having read the author's interpretation of one possible solution to the mystery.

I'm a big fan of books about Abraham Lincoln - from Carl Sandburg's classics to William Safire's "Freedom." Few, if any biographers are able to capture the lighter, wry, and whimsical side of Lincoln, tempered of course with his wisdom in the way Warren Bull is. From the opening exchange with his children, the Lincoln portrayed by Bull is full of humor, warmth, wisdom and, of course, justice. Bull's Lincoln is a folksy young lawyer, not yet a politician and not yet well known outside of Springfield. He is still establishing his reputation as a spellbinding courtroom attorney. The case he is presented in Abraham Lincoln for the Defense is no easy one to defend and is such a true mystery that it continued to puzzle Lincoln years later. The puzzle is only half of the enjoyment of this short novel, however. The author has done a marvelous job of capturing the language and ambiance of the era. Every conversation and every point of view expressed in the story seems to fit mid 1800's America. To read Abraham Lincoln for the Defense is to take a trip into the past. The story is peopled with interesting characters and even includes a romance. And although the case is settled by the end of the novel, the bulk of the details remain a mystery. It's a great read fans of both mysteries and historical novels.

This biography of lincoln is an unbiased look into the man's life. You'll find everything you would expect and much, much, more. This is not a book for the weak hearted reader. Many of the sections seem to be endless. This is not however a negative, the opposite is true. Sandburg's quest for a truly indepth redering of the Lincoln story creates these long spells and the pay off is just. Much of the humor in the book is dated and therefore will be lost on many readers. Once again, an outstanding book that gets an easy 5 stars.

Thousands upon thousands of Civil War books are available, as American readers seem to have a limitless appetite for that era. If you are looking for the best, read Sandburg on Lincoln. A major American poet takes on one of the best-known, best-loved, most tragic of American historical figures.

When I was a freshman in high school, our English teacher offered us a deal: Anyone who read Sandburg's biography (then in six rather daunting volumes) would not have to attend class for a semester. I took him up on that offer, and was blessed to find my way through Sandburg's gift to the American people. Here is the highly detailed, thoroughly researched, and articulately written story of Abe Lincoln's years among us.

If you have time to read only one of the Civil War books from that burgeoning genre, read this one. You will come to know, from the inside out, this prairie boy who became a towering figure in American history.

I collect old and rare books. My mother bought me a copy of Sandburg's one-volume edition published in 1954. Honestly, it was slow to start, but once it got to the 1850's, I couldn't put it down. Lincoln's deeds are so often trivialized in our history books. But Sandburg meticulously builds up the background in a way that forces his reader to appreciate the magnitude of the moment, and the importance of each decision--whether right or wrong--that President Lincoln made. It easily took three full weeks to read, but it was more than worth it. I closed the book thinking, "I can't believe it's over!" My advice: Read this book right away, and make someone else read it too. You'll need someone to talk to when you're through!

A Pulitzer Prize winner's master work.

I believe Sandburg is the only author to win the Pulitzer for both poetry and history. Originally a multi volume history taking decades to complete, this single volume work is an appetizer. I read it in the 1960's and went on with relish to the full multi volume work.

This single volume is insightful, laser like in it's detail yet painting the times of Lincoln in a broad and beautiful brush. Did you know that in 1860 tools could be honed to within one ten thousandth of an inch of accuracy? That magazines and newspapers said the world would change for-ever because of the new "instant" communication nation wide?

This is more than biography. It is a woven fabric depicting the times and life of Abraham Lincoln.

Abraham Lincoln comes to life through the words of his devoted and talented biographer, Carl Sandburg. This edition is an excellent compromise between Sandburg's six-volume edition and the shorter, incomplete texts that abound regarding Lincoln. Take your time with this masterpiece and follow Lincoln from youth through the climax of his political career in Washington.

Apasionante.

First find a good drummer, that is interested in playing latin. (I mean a "good" drummer!! Cause he will have a hard time on this one) Than you start excercising together through this book. For a rock bass player, it feels like starting from zero again. Latin timing is unique and not "spontaneous" if you are not born in Africa or the caraibian region, but this book provides a step by step introduction from the basic clave structures to the more advanced slapping latin rhitmes. Great fun, improving instrument control a lot, but hard work. (Take your time for this one)
The songs at the end are perfect exercises to test your progress in latin timing.

Combining traditional Latin claves with a funk backbeat. I bought this book / cd combo to improve my bass playing and drumming. (Yep! I play both.) I enjoy Latin / rock type music and wanted to become more familiar with the various styles and rhythms of this music. This book is awesome! It is also not fot the beginner or the timid unless you are dead serious about your playing. This will not only improve your playing, but your reading as well. The CD's start with a group of songs performed by the band. Then they break into LOTS of examples of ALL different styles of Latin music. Once you think you have it all mastered, the songs you heard at the beginning of the cd are there without drums / bass depending on which cd you want to play along with. Yes there are 2 cd's. One for drums, one for bass. By the way, all the songs on the cd have studio grade charts in the back of the book for you to follow. If this book doesn't keep you busy for a long time, you must already be a seasoned studio professional. Even if you are, there's probably something in here for you. ENJOY!

History has always been fascinating to me.When I picked up the book, Letters From Vinnie by Maureen Stack Sappéy, I was transported back through time to Washington D.C. during the Civil War. There, through a girl's letters to her best friend, Regina I learned about Vinnie Ream, a high spirited, stubborn, head-strong individual. In the year 2000 with the advanced computers, e-mail, chat rooms, cell phones, and overnight rush delivery services, it's pleasant to read an author's version of a letter from a time period over one hundred years ago. The letters were composed so well that I actually began to believe that those letters were real and that I was Regina! You may not agree that learning about the hard life of an unwanted sculptress isn't the best plot for a book, but guess what? To me it is!

This was a good read for someone wishing to learn how Lincoln viewed what democracy is. Be prepared for a long read.

The book would be desired by anyeone with knowledge and interest of the Civil War period as well as U.S. democracy. For a reader new to the U.S. it will be a difficult and will probably remain on the shelf for a long time.

Be aware that Lincoln's main focus was to remove slavery and used "saving the Union" as an excellent tool to maintain our democracy without bearing the brunt of post-rebel success. It's great, especially if you'd like to add the book to a collection of others about Lincoln or U.S. democracy.

This book is a wonderful collection of Abraham Lincoln's writings. Everything is included here, from private letters to public speeches, coving every possible subject from the right to strike, through slavery, and on to Lincoln's views of America.

Overall, I found this to be a wonderful book. With the passage of time, Abe Lincoln has become less beloved by the establishment, and as such he is fading from the public view. But, this book does a wonderful job of bringing him back, and letting him speak for himself. I really enjoyed this book, and highly recommend it.

This is a great book for getting an overview of President Lincolns life in a chronological way. We learn how his thinking process develops as he encounters the diverse situations of his life and times. Through actual letters, speeches and business dealings we see the man. We find it is a man in the making. President Lincoln did not arrive full and complete in terms of philosophy. He developed his thesis of the rights of man as he lived the conflicts of his fellow citizens especially as it related to the slavery of the black man. A great book you must have in your personal library. A true resource for any student of civil rights and demorcacy in the western world. Makes a great gift for any student of history.

Lincoln on Democracy edited and introduced by Mario M. Cuomo and Harold Holzer is an anthology written by Lincoln, in his own words with essays by America's foremost Civil War historians. These include: Gabor S. Boritt, William E. Gienapp, Charles B. Strozier, Richard Nelson Current, James M. McPherson, Mark E. Neely, Jr., and Hans L. Trefousse.

I found this volume to be very valuable in understanding, not only Lincoln's psyche, but that of the country as a whole. Lincoln has been called one of the best writers among the American presidents, even though his delivery was not as dynamic. This unique anthology includes such well-known selections as the Emancipation Proclamation and the Gettysburg Address, but that is only the beginning. As there are equally inspiring speeches, letter, notes and diary entries. Not to mention a revealing dream that Lincoln wrote down for posterity.

"Lincoln on Democracy" documents Lincoln as an extraordinary leader, taking him from a local politician to a national leader in time of crisis. The reaffirmation of Lincoln's commitment to the ideas of liberty and the savior of the union.

This book is dedicated to the people of Poland as this volume was assembled at the request of the Solidarity teachers in a newly democratized Poland. There are seven chapters in this book dividing it into easily followed and logical order.

They are: "The People's Business" Lincoln and the American Dream 1832-1852

"All We Have Ever Held Sacred" Lincoln and Slavery
1854-1857

"Another Explosion Will Come" Lincoln and the House Divided 1858

"Right Makes Might" Lincoln and the Race for President 1859-1860

"Hour of Trial" Lincoln and the Union 1861

"Forever Free" Lincoln and Liberty 1862-1863

"For Us the Living" Lincoln and Democracy 1863- 1865

This is a fully annotated collection also containing an extensive chronology linking Lincoln's life and accomplishments with the world and national events with photograghs from various periods in his career. The essays are written extremely well and set the tone of each chapter making this volume compelling as we reexamine our republic with Lincoln as our guide for the time period of this book.

This is a book of the highest caliber, making available in a compact and accessible form a set of speeches, letters, and other writings by President Lincoln that rank in importance with the Federalist Papers, speeches by the American founding fathers, and even to some extent philosophical works like Locke's *Second Treatise* and Rousseau's *Social Contract*. I have used this book in a course in American political philosophy from the founders to Lincoln and it worked perfectly (I also used *Lincoln at Gettysburg* and a single-volume abridged edition of the Lincoln-Douglas debates, of which only a few selections could be reprinted in Holzer and Cuomo's volume). *Lincoln on Democracy* badly needs to be reprinted, since no other work like it is currently available. The introductory essays and short intros to each section are by first-rate scholars, and are very helpful. This volume clearly shows the growth of Lincoln's thought from his roots in the Whig political tradition (with its emphasis on internal improvements paid for by taxes falling largely on the rich, free labor, and the supremacy of the federal government). When the Republican party began under Lincoln's guidance, it stood for almost the opposite of everything it stands for today. Lincoln also developed the crucial argument against slavery in the enlightenment natural rights tradition, arguing that the sovereign authority of a democratic government rested on moral presuppositions concerning the natural freedom and dignity of each human person, which, therefore, no legislature could validly violate in laws it makes without losing the authority to make laws at all. One also finds in this book source, such at the Letter to the Boston Republicans, that echo Emerson's and Hegel's arguments against slavery, namely that enslaving others distorts the master's own psyche by basing his self-respect on coerced rather than free recognition from others, thus implicitly denying his own right to liberty. In sum, I recommend this book wholeheartedly to any student of Lincoln's thought, both in politics and democratic theory.

I was only 8 years old when Lincoln Park closed forever. My parents would bring me and then my sister when she was born. We have pictures of us on the kiddie carousel, German Carousel, Mother goose ride and more. I regret that I was never able to ride the Comet, as I was too small. As an adult I LOVE coasters and I'm sad I was never able to experience the Comet.

My parents went on their first date at the park and played mini golf. My mom and her family often went during her childhood. She was a big fan of the roller rink. My grandparents and great aunt and uncle used to go ballroom dancing.

This book really takes you back to remember a time when things were simple and it was all about family.

I drive by the sad remains of Lincoln Park everyday on my way to work. Seeing it the decaying remains on a daily basis made me forget what it looked like in it's glory and even just after closing. This book brought back all the memories.

Many wonderful pictures in this book and a wealth of information. Like others I wish it was longer and had even more pictures in it, but I am grateful just the same.

Thank you Spinner Publications for creating this book. Check out the video by the same name, too!

While there is nothing that could duplicate the numerous sleepless nights leading upto the annual summer trip to Lincoln Park, this book comes close. I kept looking closely at some of those b/w pictures from the 60s and 70s to see if me or my siblings were in them!

Going to Lincoln Park for the first time (in the early 70's) was one of the best family outtings we ever had. We were there as part of a special Polaroid day, and the special "Polaroid passes" we had tied to our wrists allowed us kids to ride on everything in the park for only 50 cents!

Unlike the modern theme parks, we were allowed to bring in our own food. Dad set up a home base in the picnic area where he cooked hamburgers and hot dogs on a portable grill. The folks spent all day chatting with the other Polaroid employees while us kids went nuts all around the park (I was still young enough to enjoy the colorful rides in Kiddie Land, yet old enough for most of the adult rides (except the big Coaster...!)). That day started a yearly tradition (either going with the Polaroid group or on my birthday in July). But, 30 years later the park is gone (and Polaroid pretty much is too!)....

This book really brings back a lot of memories! You'll re-discover attractions you may have forgotten about, and you'll learn quite a bit about the park. It has a lot of pictures and you'll go through this book very quickly!

Overall, the book is a treat, but you'll find yourself wishing it was longer. It leaves you hungering for a bit more. I would have liked it to include pictures of *all* the attractions, and maybe an overhead plan/map of the park. (It was kind of hard trying to picture where everything used to be located.) But, this is the only aspect of the book that I found was lacking.

I'm really glad I bought this book, and if you have a Lincoln Park story to tell, you'll be glad you did too! You'll then be compelled to write about what the park meant to you! (We should turn these review pages into "Lincoln Park Remembered - Part 2"!)

I have missed Lincoln Park so much since it's demise. I was so afraid this wonderful place would be lost forever. To see it come to life again in this book brought back so many happy memories. My grandfather used to take my brother and I every Wednesday during the summer. The pictures and stories stirred memories, smells, sounds, and smiles long forgotten. If you ever had the privilege of going you would also enjoy locating the video "Lincoln Park Remembered", with photographs and film clips. How nice to be able to step through the gates again!

Lincoln Park Remembered is one of those special books that from the moment you receive it you just know you will never part with it. The publisher was able to obtain hundreds of remarkable photographs from members of the community who wanted very much to see that very special place honored and remembered. I remember long Summer days spent there as a child with my parents and grand parents and how everyone was able to find things to do that suited them to a T. This book is like a personal photo album and I look forward to introducing and sharing Lincoln Park with my daughter, who will just have to trust me when I tell her the place was holy.

Inter-service Rivalry and a Civil War Fiasco

Weddle has given us a sympathetic tale of one of the premier figures of the 19th century navy -- Samuel Francis Du Pont, whose statue initially graced Washington's Dupont Circle before it was moved to his home state of Delaware and replaced by a fountain.

The climax of Du Pont's career was his least-succesful campaign -- the abortive attempt to take heavily-fortified Charleston from the sea. Weddle convincingly argues that this attack -- undertaken in spite of Du Pont's reservations -- was doomed to failure. The early ironclads were simply no match for heavy shore-based fortifications. In the best tradition of inter-service rivalry, the Navy rejected Du Pont's request for a joint army-navy assault: "I beg of you not to let the Army spoil it."

Equally interesting is Weddle's description of Du Pont's early career, which spanned a period of rapid technological change, from sail to sidewheeled steamers to ironclads with screws. Perhaps Du Pont's most important and lasting contribution was his successful struggle to introduce merit into the navy's promotion system.

For lovers of history, a marvelous book!

A fascinating book! I particularly appreciate the way the author integrates Du Pont's human strengths and frailties with the bureaucratic, logistical, and armament systems of the time. He provided just enough background information on Du Pont's family, peers, and related events for readers to appreciate their impact without being taken off track. Ultimately the reader sees the guy as very much a real man with skills, challenges, successes and failures that are just as relevant today as 150 years ago. (Anyone who doubts the relevance of history to modern events need only read this book.) Finally, I greatly enjoyed learning about the technological advances of the day in the context of the times. It's easy for us today to look back at the Civil War as being an "old-style war" like that of 1812, but in reading Weddle's book I was enlightened to the fact that from a technological attitudes standpoint, the Civil War was much more of a "modern" war than I had previously realized. What kid isn't fascinated by the battle of the Monitor and the Virginia (Merrimack), for example? In history books that event is always presented as an isolated incident, but thanks to this book I now realize that steam-powered vessels and ironclads were the wonder weapons of their day -- they captured the public imagination (and those of military planners) just as tanks, jets, and nuclear weapons have in more recent times. It has been a truly delightful read and I've learned a lot. Incredible the peers Du Pont rubbed elbows with at the time -- legendary heroes like Stephen Decatur and Matthew Perry. If you like history, you will love this book. Not only does it offer fascinating facts and insights into a man and his times, but it reads like a novel. Don't miss it!

Great read! Easy, smooth flowing syntax and text. Almost reads like a novel. A nice mixture of text, maps, and images. Substantial research has brought together the personal man as well as the public man and his concern for United States protection and the well being of his naval forces.
Coming from a naval family, I was very interested in seeing the evolving history of the US Navy. I was also interested to follow the interaction of husband and wife and her influence on DuPont. Highly recommend this book.

Kevin Weddle has blazed new trails in this long-overdue look at one of the U.S. Navy's most important but little-known leaders. He has tapped into the extensive resources of the Du Pont family to capture the essence of a complex figure who stood tall at the cusp of a critical period of American history. The book is a quick read and Samuel Francis Du Pont's story is told with balance, style, and accuracy.
The best biographies hold relevance for for present and future leaders - and this one is no exception. Du Pont plays key roles as mariner, technological innovator, personnel reformer, diplomat, strategist, combat commander, and family man. Through it all, he remains a man of steadfast principle.
Kevin Weddle has spun a superb yarn and created an impressive work that shines a contemporary lamp on a long-neglected giant of the U.S. Navy. This volume is a worthy addition to the library of those with an interest in naval history, the Civil War, or leadership.

Much More Than a Great Biography

For those of you who eagerly await the one book on Civil War naval history for every fifty released concerning the land war, you will not be disappointed. Not only is this book an exceptional biography of Admiral Du Pont, but it also provides a thorough look at the Navy during the service's formative years prior to the Civil War. This is possible because Du Pont's influence proved instrumental during this period; he authored the first comprehensive national maritime strategy (which provided guidance for transforming the Navy from a coastal defense force into a "Blue Water" service with offensive capability), as well as catalyzed much-needed personnel reform. Du Pont's at-sea adventures in the Mexican War and during a hazardous voyage to the Far East also make for great reading. What sets this book apart from any good biography, however, is the insightful discussion of civil-military friction and ill-conceived reliance on technology that characterize Du Pont's 1863 attack on Charleston, SC. Du Pont was against this operation (believing it to be an unnecessary peripheral enterprise that would siphon off valuable - and limited - resources from the all-important blockade), but Lincoln, Navy Secretary Welles, and Assistant Secretary Fox all though the capture of Charleston had important symbolic value. Since civilian leadership sets policy and related strategic objectives, Du Pont saluted smartly and began planning the operation. Friction arose when the admiral tried to persuade Welles and Fox that Charleston could only be captured via a joint Army-Navy operation. Welles and Fox (demonstrating blatant service parochialism) favored an all-Navy operation, and instructed Du Pont to proceed without Army assistance. Despite evidence to the contrary (Drewry's Bluff, VA and Fort McAllister, GA), Welles and Fox were convinced that monitor ironclads alone could destroy Charleston's forts and capture the city; as a result, they confidently assured Lincoln that the monitor technology would prevail. Of course, Du Pont was correct and the operation tragically ended in failure. Civil-military friction and technology as a military panacea are familiar themes throughout American military history - and we see them still in the current global war on terrorism. Colonel Weddle, therefore, does the reader a great service by providing such a thought-provoking discussion and analysis of these crucial issues. Superbly written, thoroughly researched, and well organized, this book was a pleasure to read and I highly recommend it.

As to the story:

Manhunt: The 12-Day Chase for Lincoln's Killer, by James Swanson, is an excellent read. The author takes the reader to gaslight lit streets and a time of joy, followed by great sorrow. Swanson tells the story of President Lincoln's assassin in an almost - but not quite - sympathetic manner. Swanson introduces the reader to many secondary characters that assisted Booth in his 12-day escape from the authorities.

The book is written in a style that is less text book than mystery thriller. Swanson does an excellent job in making the reader feel the urgency that both sides felt, in trying to locate and/or hide Booth. The P.S. portion of this version of the book provides excellent insight into the author's goals and objectives in telling the story.

This is a 5-star read that I highly recommend. Learning about the strong emotions that existed during this tumultuous time period in U.S. history. Enjoy.

The narraton is rock solid in this book. It is a treat to listen as you read the book. It is available at some libraries in unabridged which is always my preference.

Great Book, but why abridged audiobook?

I wonder why they didn't do an unabridged version of the book. Richard Thomas does a great job at reading the book, but I was disappointed that they left out some of the most interesting parts of the book. The epilogue, for example, is SO fascinating as Swanson does a "what happened later to the rest of the witnesses" and a brief history of the theater itself. All of this is missing in the audiobook. Read the complete book for all of the fascinating information.

From the opening minute until the closing segment of this audio book is one that will keep your interest. The author writes a story that makes you feel like he was really there observing the entire adventure. Richard Thomas who is the narrator adds great depth to the story by his wonderful reading voice. In addition, this story is a great way to learn a little history of the Civil War time period while enjoying the audio book.

An absolutely captivating story. I knew the basics before but the detail by James Swanson and the wonderful performance by Richard Thomas made the story come alive. I have listened to many books on CD but this is the first one I have written a review on because it deserves it. Anyone interested in American History should listen to this book.
