A bold new take on an old standard.
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 1998-11-19
This imaginative book takes a traditional children's favorite and enhances it with bold colorful pictures and a big surprise ending. It quickly became a favorite for my two-year-olds--so much so that it became sort of a family ritual to make singing this book the last thing they did before going to bed each night. Simple but smart, this book is suitable for toddlers and for older kids, who will better appreciate the comical ending.

Simple text, bright illustrations and vehicle after vehicle make up this perfect book for those toddlers who are also fanatics of moving machines. Follow the little red car as it carries the family through the city to its final destination by the sea. Characters, both drivers and pedestrians, line these pages to help children understand up, over, around, and STOP, along with other phrases used to describe motion.

Orwellians - Find this Book
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2000-01-16
I had never heard of the author or the book when I picked up a British edition at a used bookstore. I had hoped that anyone writing a novel on Orwell would possess Orwell's virtues of directness, frankness, and lucidity while offering up some ideas. Caute succeeds on all fronts, and in some matters of technique he is clearly Orwell's superior. He also has a sense of humor and his characters - including Orwell himself - are more nuanced than any Orwell character.

The book's story is about Orwell researching Animal Farm. He finds the book's narrator - a boy named Alex - hanging on at the family farm after his Mum and Dad have both abandoned it. There are pigs and other animals whose names will be familiar to the reader. Alex fills us in on his contributions to both Animal Farm and 1984 and his continuing relationship with Orwell. The last page of Alex's narrative contains a surprise which is perhaps intended to show that - as Orwell says in the novel - Orwell is often wrong.

Caute himself has written 8 other novels and 10 non-fiction books, including several on the left, communism and fellow travellers.

Firsthand memories of Lincoln
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2007-08-23
An invaluable collection of recollections by persons who knew Lincoln before and during the presidency. The stories were recorded in interviews conducted by John Nicolay, one of Lincoln's White House secretaries. This book will probably be enjoyed more by specialists than by general readers. Five-star rating is based on book's usefulness to researchers.

The first step in selecting shrubs
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2000-04-01
I bought this book several years ago and left it on the shelf. Then one day when I was looking up a particular shrub, I decided to check this book. From that time forth it has been my first choice when deciding on selecting a particular shrub. The auther is a exceptional horticulturist of many years standing with several plants named after him.

Absolutely core addition

Review Date: 2007-06-09
The bicentennial anniversary of Abraham Lincoln's birth will take place on February 12, 2009. "Our Very Illustrious Brother, Abraham Lincoln" by bibliographer Larissa P. Watkins is co-published by Oak Knoll Press and the Library of the Supreme Council in order to present an up-to-date bibliography for Lincoln scholars and American history enthusiasts in preparation for the anticipated celebration. A work of exhaustive scholarship, "Our Very Illustrious Brother, Abraham Lincoln" features some 1,000 entries, including more than 100 images of covers and title pages, as well as brief excerpts about President Lincoln drawn from many of the listed publications. With the inclusion of an informative foreword, an informed introduction, a 26-page facsimile of "Abraham Lincoln, Freemason" by Lincoln collector and scholar L. D. Carman, "Our Very Illustrious Brother, Abraham Lincoln" is a very strongly recommended and absolutely core addition to personal, academic, and community library Abraham Lincoln and American History reference collections.

This book is a good overview of Lincoln's life.
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 1998-11-07
The author has purposely addressed the dearth of readable and manageable accounts of Lincoln's life and career. Young people and adults alike will find this book valuable. Although brief compared to the usual tomes written on this subject, the reader will gain a good understanding of the formation of Lincoln's character and magnitude of what he a accomplished. The author's style is smooth and engaging allowing the reader to think about the subject matter rather than struggling from one paragraph to the next. I found that the end of the book came quickley and without great labor. The curious reader will come away from this book with a desire for more knowledge and understanding of this great man.

The master critic on Shakespeare, Keats, Shelley, Wordsworth
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-03-20
This set of essays by the master Shakespeare critic A.C. Bradley contains essays on :Poetry for Poetry's Sake, The Sublime, Hegel's Theory of Tragedy, Wordsworth, Shelley's View of Poetry, The Long Poem in the Age of Wordsworth, The Letters of Keats, The Rejection of Falstaff, Shakespeare's Antony and Cleopatra, Shakespeare the Man, Shakespeare's Theatre and Audience.
I especially enjoyed the essay on Keats where Bradley focuses on the meaning of Beauty in Keats' letters. His appreciation of the remarkable character of Keats and how this is reflected both in the Letters and the Poems is instructive. The essay on Shakespeare the Man I found a bit speculative , yet another attempt to say something about the character of the character who mastered and made so many different characters. It is interesting that Bradley believes that Shakespeare is the poet who best exemplified Keats' prescription for what a poet ideally should be, one whose negative capability means he is within and without all the characters he creates. The essay on Wordsworth focuses on his originality especially in finding in the simplicities of daily life, and in simple characters the deepest expressions of human soul.
But there is much more than I have indicated here . This is a classic set of essays by one of the English literary traditions, most important critics.
