Creative yet classical approach

The subject itself is so exciting that you must be really bad writers and photographers to miss the point. "Italian style" authors are both very creative persons. Read "a new look at country style" from photograph Simon Upton. You might be shocked by the green carpet on the floor of a very simple white classical house. These guys play with colors, concepts, modes. They drive us to new approaches. Buy this book or ask somebody to offer it to you.

This book is wonderful. My husband and I go to Jamaica every two years and plan to take our kids someday. In the meantime this is a great way of introducing them to the cultures and sites of this great country. The pictures are great. I love the honesty and the hopefulness of the rhymes. I would highly recommend this to those who have been to Jamaica as well as those who have not.

This book is so well-researched and perceptive that it transcends the genre of juvenile books. In fact, I plan to recommend it to senior citizens taking my music appreciation course in the Evolution of Jazz. Collier provides a good, brief, clear history of jazz, from its roots to free jazz and neo-bop. In addition, the final two chapters on rhythm and on improvising are unexpectedly learned and enlightening. A real find!

A must read for anyone interested in Jazz

In what he calls a number of assays but what reads as a complete book Collier debunks a number of popular myths and shines a new light into some dark corners. Among the myths are the fact that timing in Jazz is rigid (it ain't), blacks are the originators (a case is made that the black creoles were much more important) of Jazz and critics know what they are talking about (it seems they frequently don't). The final chapter is typical of the whole book. In it Collier describes the importance of the local amateur and semi-pro players to Jazz and argues that Jazz wouldn't be abe to exsist without these dedicated people, a fact which is frequently overlooked by almost everybody. This book definately isn't the be all and end all of Jazz studies, it is on the whole to superficial and fails to deal with any of the music except in passing, but it definately makes one think about some long held beliefs and popular 'myths' in Jazz.

Jones Of Old Lincoln by Doak Maddox Mansfield is an engaging biographical novel based upon the life of George Washington Jones, a prominent nineteenth-century politician from Lincoln County, Tennessee. Deeply delving into the life and the remarkable accomplishments of an unusual man, Jones Of Old Lincoln is a complex study and intimate story of a man whose desires and accomplishments still shape the lives of many today. Jones Of Old Lincoln is a very strongly recommended novel because of a superbly crafted narrative, and author Doak Mansfield's creative interpretation in an easy-to-read history-based fiction based on the outstanding successes of the great American politician.

This is an adorable book of Christmas stories from around the world, five stories in all from diverse cultures. The illustrations are very colorful and primitive in style. I would recommend this book for ages 5-10. I bought it for our Lutheran church library, and am glad I did.

This is a great book about Korea. I have Korean students so I am always looking for books about it. K is for Korea really focuses on Korean culture and things I didn't know about it before. The photographs go well with the book and I found it informative. I think my students will be able to share their culture with me while I read this book to them. There is a lot to prompt their memories.

On better, smarter urban growth
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2003-07-23
It would seem that urban growth is inevitable, but we all want to live in an environment with controlled traffic, preserved open spaces, and efficient services. This comprehensive collection of essays discusses the various approaches to land management and public policies on development. Through a book like this, which aims at a better understanding of growth processes and policy, it may be possible to manage development for just such an environment. The chapters, edited by Gerrit Knaap who also provides a succinct and clear preface, are divided into four sections. The first, on measuring development capacity, discusses ways that growth may be estimated and monitored. The second section, on urban service capacity, looks at better monitoring of current services and transportation and assessing future needs, which as most know are vital to good quality of urban life. The third section, on development demand, is more technical and considers Portland as a case study. The fourth covers a broad array of important topics, from land market monitoring for better public policy, to industrial and office land markets, to housing affordability. The last section (and chapter) considers market monitoring systems in the UK.
This is a significant book that I would recommend to planners and policy decision-makers, as well as to anyone concerned about his/her urban community.

A special gift

We have an 18 month old grandson who was adopted from Korea. On the occasion of his becoming an American Citizen, we purchased this book as a gift. His parents want to preserve his Korean heritage, so this special book seemed appropriate. Although it is geared to an older child, we feel that he will appreciate the stories in the future. The book is nicely illustrated, and although I did not have the time to read the entire book, the passages which I did get a chance to read seemed interesting.
