Two old friends, who also happen to be two of England's best known gardeners--correspond for two years in this absorbing and heart-warming book. The conversation was intended to be about their respective gardens and nurseries, and the reader who loves gardens will be richly rewarded. But the correspondence ranges much further--to music, food, family, friends, colleagues, and, inevitably , the weather. Beth Chatto's luminous intelligence and courageous openness set off the forthright and irrepressible Christopher Lloyd. This is a book about love, life, and plants, and a real winner.

If you are fortunate enough to acquire the 1968 printing of this book, you will have acquired a treasure. Although the book is simplistic and written for young adults, it is an excellent yet concise version of the death of the 16th President.
The pictures in this book are worth the price alone. In today's politically correct book market, you can not find the picture of the assassination conspirators being hung. The other pictures make readers feel as though they are visiting a Lincoln musuem.
The story itself begins with the Good Friday, April 14, 1865. Days after the Civil War ended, John Wilkes Booth murdered the president. Even more revealing than the documentation of the assassination and funeral is the trial of the acused. In a show of anger, Secretary of War Edwin Stantion strong-armed a trial and convictions on the acused with blatant violations of constituional right. Perhaps it was felt that this stance was important in maintaining the reforming country. This book certainly gave me a new perpective on the death of Abraham Lincoln.

The book "The Death of Lincoln" is one of the best books I ever read. I liked it because it has lots of pictures, neat stories, and interesting facts! "The Death of Lincoln" describes when he was elected, his time as president, and his death. It also mentions what happened after the killer and his cronies were brought to justice. And it also states how Lincoln knew he was going to be assassinated!

Author Jeffrey Deaver does it again! This is an immensely entertaining, page turning read for all thriller enthusiasts. The story line centers around an unknown killer unleashed upon Washington, D.C.. Known as the "Digger", this maniacal killer proceeds into D.C.'s Metro Station at 9:00 AM on New Year's Eve 1999 and begins a shooting spree that leaves many dead. The Digger has been instructed by an unknown criminal mastermind accomplice to kill hordes of people at clocked intervals on the eve of the millennium, unless a twenty million dollar demand for ransom is met. The ransom note is the only communication from this criminal genius who alone can control the actions of the killer. D.C.'s mayor agrees to pay the staggering ransom, but on the way to the drop, the accomplice appears to have been killed in a freak traffic accident. Who can now stop the "Digger" from his appointed rounds?
Enter Parker Kincaid, document examiner extraordinaire and former FBI agent. Kincaid has been called back as a consultant to assist the FBI who need to stop the killer before he kills again. Kincaid is a wonderful, fully fleshed character. A single parent with his own share of troubles, he is as interesting as is Lincoln Rhyme, another of Deaver's characters around whom several of his books have revolved. Interestingly enough, Rhyme has a cameo appearance in this book which should give Deaver's fans an added kick while reading this book. Like Rhyme, Kincaid is a master of deductive reasoning and is a thinking person's detective. It is interesting how his analysis of the ransom note provides clues for the FBI to follow up in their quest to stop the killer before it is too late.
The book is filled with numerous plot twists and turns, which should provide even the most jaded devotees of thrillers with a satisfying read. This action packed book keeps the reader guessing. Just when you think it's all over, you are yet once again surprised. The only criticism is that the end of the book strains the imagination. It almost borders on the absurd. Yet such is Deaver's writing that this does not impact unduly on the absolute enjoyment one will get from reading this book. It is a riveting read!

Gideon Welles, who served on the cabinets of Abraham Lincoln and Andrew Johnson as Secretary of the Navy, was one of the most honest statesmen of his day. The diary provides an in-depth look at the day to day events of a nation and Cabinet during the dark days of the Civil War and Reconstruction. In the diary Mr. Welles writes opinions of many leaders of that bygone era. His opinion of Ulysses S. Grant was far from flattering. Welles was not a Radical Republican and supported Andrew Johnson throughout his impeachment trial. No Civil War library is complete without this wonderful three volume set.

Nothing says Victorian more than Christmas, and this excellent book by Simon Callow presents a Victorian Christmas as seen through the eyes of the most popular of the Victorian era authors. Charles Dickens unintentionally reinvented the way we celebrate that glorious holiday by one short novel he wrote in 1843 called 'A Christmas Carol.' At the time of writing, the Christmas celebrations he described in his little book were virtually non-existant, but it was Mr. Dickens' descriptions of the way he felt that Christmas should be celebrated that took England, then America, by storm. The party at Fezziwig's, nephew Fred's gathering of friends and family, the Cratchit's meager only in sight celebration. All in descriptive detail. And it's because of Dickens' view on the matter that we celebrate the holiday the way we do now.
Mr. Callow's book gives the reader a full view of an early Victorian Christmas celebration in a number of ways. First and foremost, the complete as it was written novel of 'A Christmas Carol' is here so one can read how it all began. Callow's book goes on to explain the holiday feasts that the celebrants partook in as the Christmas Season grew in popularity, as well as the many traditions - old and new - that became popular. One very old tradition that is still carried on today is wassailing - that is, the singing of Christmas Carols for money or hot chocolate, although in days of old, the waites sang for money or a fruity rum-laced drink!
There are plenty of original 19th century drawings and paintings throughout to give the book the look of Dickens' time.
As this book rightfully states, the only images of Christmas that owe nothing to Dickens are those of the Nativity and of Father Christmas/Santa Claus. Well...ok...the Christmas Tree was introduced to the English through Prince Albert.
I love the Christmas Season and, besides the original Biblical account of the birth of Christ, 'A Christmas Carol' in its many movie versions as well as, of course, the original Dickens writing, is the epitome of the spirit of the holiday. This book by Simon Callow will help anyone who desires to have a Dickens Christmas celebration of there own, either through thoughts while reading it or, if you would like to take it a step further, by having your own Victorian/Dickens Christmas party.
This book by Simon Callow, by the way, is well worth your hard earned dollar.

Graham Rice is one of my very favorite garden writers, always personal, funny and extraordinarily knowledgable, and in this new, gorgeously illustrated book about annual plants, he absolutely shines.
Rice makes me agree that I too hate dumpy boring marigolds, for instance, and then hands me wonderful information about using the old-fashioned striped Victorian heirloom types instead. Banished also is the lump-style plantings that usually go hand in hand with annual flowers; Rice shows me how to combine looser, more lovely kinds so that they intermingle and entwine intimately. (His prose is almost purple on this point, and I love it!)
This is a great book, enriching the mind, heart and eye. It will make you look at gardening in an entirely new light.

Sarah Garland's books are finally availiable again and we couldn't be happier...the sweetest book here with a tinge of reality and illustrations that your child (and you!) will pour over. This mother and her children (and pets) spend a lovely Spring day in the Garden. Things go wrong, but in the end, all's well, and they all rest near their AGA. Delightfully British!

As someone interested in "militaria"i ordered this massive volume(s) sight unseen on a hunch.Quiet a risk considering the cost. But it was a winning bet.Although not the "be all end all"on the subject(that would take many more volumes)this hefty work comes close.DPM stands for disruptive pattern material, the British definition of camouflage.Who would want such a work?More people than you might think. From those with an interest in military subjects to fashion,art,music,biology....you name it.This is not a dry military history. Not by a long shot. This volume should be named"everything you ever wanted to know about camouflage but were afraid to ask for fear of being labeled a warmonger".My criticisms about the text right away.As an "art book"the author Hardy Blechman goes to almost ridiculous lengths to state his anti war(make that anti military)views. He must have feared(perhaps rightly it must be said)that any serious examination of the subject matter would bring about the wrath of the "artsy set".Nonsence.This is an amazingly entertaining work.Put it on your table(a sturdy one)and amaze your art house chums and even your local NRA members. This book will amaze most everyone.Anything you ever wanted to know about the use of camouflage in todays global culture. And yes,it takes a book this big.The art and science of camouflage in nature, art, history, fashion, music(yes music)toys, furnishings, you name it.If you are a military clothing enthusiast(or a "geardo"as we are sometimes called)do not expect a military style monograph. This is an "art book"by artists. If you can put the books leftish tilt in perspective(even when it might seem self rightious)even you will be entertained by this 2 volume set.Thats right. As if the main text wasnt big enough(did i mention it was big?)you also get a smaller companion volume thats is a catalog of almost every nations national battle dress. If you are an artist type(slickster, fashionista, alternative culture vulture)you will be amazed,i promise.Throw a party at your loft/studio and invite your black clad"mod"friends and maybe the marine vet and deer hunter on the block for a showing of this book.Sit back and let the discussions unfold and entertainment ensue. This is a big(oh lord its big)and heavy(just try to curl up with it)and yes, expensive book. But you will not be dissapointed.
