Its a wonderfull twist on the original tale. This Cinderella takes on life with her wonderful positive passionate originality. She tells us that be who you are not to please the king or queen but to please what you feel you need to be! Strange that as an adult this is my favourite book! But it teaches everyone to stand tall and be marvelous and to be yourself! Illustrations are magic and the text wonderfully different! The outlook - positive! It teaches women young and old to be brave to take the risk of finding your Prince Charming... and its sheer inspiration!

This latest book from Shelley Fowles continues in the ethno-cartoon genre aimed at children and brings a fun, dynamic and cultural perspective to both art and historical folk tales. Highly recommended!

We have always enjoyed Jeffery Deaver and I think we have read all the Lincoln Rhyme novels. I wish they would come out even faster. I would recommend this book to all Deaver fans and to anyone looking for a new mystery writer to follow.

Exploring an Unlikely Alliance

During the Civil War, while Britain and France watched from the periphery, Russian sent ships on formal visits to Boston, New York, San Francisco and Washington, D.C. Part of a delicate diplomatic dance designed to stave off foreign support for the Confederacy and to bolster the international presence of Russia, the fleet visits were just part of the U.S.'s foreign policy moves that helped keep foreign powers from interfering in the U.S. Civil War. Drawing heavily upon the papers of Baron de Stoeckl, Russia's minister to the U.S., Woldman does an excellent job of exploring the motives and goals of diplomats from both nations. All too often foreign policy is overlooked in treatments of the Civil War, and it is a shame that Woldman's book has been out of print for so long.

What a moving story of a young life. The author translates the reader into the most intimate human daily life of a time lost to history. Elmer was the first US celebrity. I beilive he helped Lincoln get elected to his first term of Presidency. A great read. Any Lincoln biographer who misses the link to Elmer misses a really important aspect of both men!

Lucy Micklethwait will hopefully add more books to this concept. A whole series of subjects that introduce young eyes to the art world is much needed and Micklethwait seems to be the one to prepare it.
In this small but stunning book the child's eyes are trained to look for color, learn to identify color related to natural forms as depicted by artists, both from the school of the masters to contemporary practitioners, and react! The results are not only beneficial to the child: reading and viewing this book is bound to sharpen the eye and the knowledge of the parent or friend sharing the experience.
If there is to be a future for art, artists, and museums, in this era of cutbacks in art teaching from the school curriculum, then books such as this sensitive one will help save the day. Recommended for eyes of every age! Grady Harp, December 05

I have pored over the pages of this book and learned volumes from it. Hobhouse's discussion of color theory and its relationship to the garden is a revelation, and her suggestions and illustrations of garden companions are inspirational.
When you get serious about designing your borders, this is essential reading.

An Early Traveller's Handbook

Review Date: 2007-11-18
This is an exact reproduction of a 1924 handbook for those intrepid early drivers venturing to explore America along the first coast-to-coast signed highway for automobiles. Connecting Times Square in New York City with Lincoln Park in San Francisco, the route passed through hundreds of small towns and big cities and provided a new means of escape from the workaday world for thousands of motorists.
The book looks old. The cover is a photographic reproduction of the worn leather cover of the original 1924 edition, revealing all the rubbing and creases of the well used original.
The 536 numbered pages describe the route and the cities, towns and sights encountered along the way. It is arranged geographically, starting in New York and ending in California. Includes maps useful to the motorist for navigating through the towns encountered.
There are hundreds of photos showing 1920s autos in different scenic locations. Includes descriptions of road conditions and how it was built, what the 1920s traveller should bring along, detours to nearby attractions including the national parks, traffic laws, and an index. Perhaps the most interesting feature is the hundreds of advertisements geared toward the early motorist advertising automobiles, auto accessories, motels and other services along the way.
The detail in this book could be used to locate sections of the route that have become byways to the newer interstate system. A really fun book and a great companion to have along when exploring the historic Lincoln Highway.

I stumbled upon this little gem at my local bookstore and was immediately blown away at how well-constructed the durned thing is. I'm not talking about the physical characteristics, although I must say that I do like the fact that it is a spiral bound paperback, and slightly larger than a pocketbook. What I mean is that it is chockablock full of inumerable nuggets of vital RPM and mintmark Variety information such that it seems to leave no aspect unexamined. What is really cool about it is that the b/w photographic blow-ups are of Extremely High Quality so that, unlike in most coin books, one can actually see what the author is attempting to point out. (Note: For an impossibly bad example, I mean excellent example of the impossibly bad, see 'the best of the jefferson nickel doubled die varieties....only thing unfunny is the high price that you will pay to get the lavishly photographed book whose beautiful pictures almost never show what the author purports to be pointing out). Also, the book has a delightful feature titled the 'Most Wanted' which dedicates a whole page each of information and photo to a number of particularly good and rare varieties. The book also has broken down the varieties into varieties so, for instance, there is a section on 'Over and Dual Mint Mark Varieties' and one on 'Non Doubled Mint Mark Varieties' both with heaps of excellent information. Plus there are population reports, comparative raritiy charts, and all kinds of other great info that will leave the unbelieving reader in awe of the authors/editors. I highly recommend this book even if you don't collect Lincolns: I don't and I think this is a Super Book and an ESSENTIAL to own.
