This story is very small but also very touching. It provides a good lesson in helping people and animals and in priorities. I really look forward to reading this book to my class.

Read Sherwood, For Sure!!!

I am particularly interested in American and British drama from the first half of the 20th century. My favorite American playwright is Robert E. Sherwood, my favorite American play is Sherwood's "The Road to Rome," and my second favorite American play is "Abe Lincoln in Illinois."

I lost all sense of time and place while reading "Abe." I forgot I was sitting on a couch in NYC, and thought I was back in Illinois with Honest Abe.

Sherwood is a FOUR-TIME Pulitzer Prize winner, and it makes me sad that this brilliant playwright is so sorely neglected, and that so many people give you a puzzled look when you mention his name.

Read this play, read the aforementioned "Road to Rome" (a love story, a laugh-out-loud comedy, and ALSO a "message play"), and your literary life will be enriched. (Trust me, I've read hundreds of plays, and heck, it ain't a piece of cake to win even ONE Pulitzer!!)

...The illustrations opened up discussions about what life was like in the United States in the 1800's. The familiar Lincoln lessons about working hard and succeeding in the face of adversity are well-presented.

Easy Reading for Dyslexia
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2002-03-14
Our daughter has recently read this book. She has dyslexia and read it without hesitation. She is 10 and the author mentioned in this book how she wrote easy reading for children who needed that type of reading. She targeted the audience perfectly in our situation. I found the book as refreshing as our daughter did. I have purchased the book on Amanzon.Com because it was the first available of a book that is not in circulation. The book and author has touched our lives in ways you will only know if you are in the world of dyslexia.

Perfect

This book is perfect. I discovered it at my local library while working on my children's literature review file. I read it and was floored by how great it was and how I would not rest until I owned a copy of my very own. The book is tall and narrow just like the man himself. I especially liked the pictures of Abraham as a little boy. In so many other books, even children's books, Mr. Lincoln is portrayed as looking gruff his entire life. In this book, he smiles and grins and is adorable just like any other little boy. The book also has small ancedotes about his life which make Abraham more real to young children. The text handles the assassination in a way that is not as scary to young children. One of the most moving pictures is Lincoln's funeral train passing a field where both a black and white man were working, side by side, but had stopped to bow their heads. I read this book to a Kindergraten class and they were enchanted. I highly recommend this book for any classroom or school library. Enjoy!

The best Lincoln ever

I first read this Lincoln when I was [...]- in its Spanish version-and since then I have read it more than a dozen times- and each time I keep finding it more refreshing.
Emil Ludwig wrote several other biographies, but Lincoln's was his best. Now I have it in English for my children-I am sure that they fall in love with Honest Abe as I did.

A classic and reliable account

Beveridge's treatment of Lincoln's pre-presidential years has been admired ever since it first appeared nearly a century ago. He was a pioneer in the topic and an industrious researcher. He is more sympathetic than I am to Lincoln's great political rival Stephen A. Douglas, but that disagreement doesn't diminish my admiration for this massive and well-documented two-volume book.

Who is that guy on the penny? Why did they use his face on the penny? Couldn't they find a more attractive guy or did he just have the right profile that they wanted? Maybe you do know that Abraham Lincoln was the 16th President of the United States. Did you know that Illinois is known as the "Land of Lincoln" because he was so important in American history? Abe Lincoln is also known as Honest Abe. Did you know that he was a Godly guy?

He believed in equal rights for all people. He had been around a lot longer than Martin Luther King Jr. Abe Lincoln freed the slaves. It didn't matter that some guys have white skin and others black. He believed in freedom for all. For standing up for what he believed in, he faced death. In fact, when he was sitting in a theater, someone decided to kill him even though he was the President of the United States.

"Abraham Lincoln (Chronicles of Faith)"is written like a novel for kids. It uses historical information and presents in a kid-friendly format. Through the use of this book, you can learn more about this famous American without studying a history textbook. After reading this book, I now have a new appreciation for this slave-freer President. Way to go, Abraham!
