This is a compilation of war diaries from young people, about 12-20 years old, in wars from WWI to present conflicts in Israel, Palestine and Iraq. The diarists are amazingly engaging.. One minute they are typical adolescents worrying about school or friendships, and then they are concerned for their lives, those of their families, and needs such as food, basic hygiene and human dignity. And often they are both typical and suffering at the same time, a fascinating interplay.

If you know a young person who has met with serious losses in their life, this may be a difficult, but cathartic book for them to read. In our present time in the US, lives for many of our young people seem very simple and easy. Those who have experienced significant loss feel quite alone, as it seems that their peers have no worries beyond popularity, sports and grades. This book can help with that as they hear the voices of those who also, although very young, are dealing with difficult --- sometimes wayyyyy beyond difficult-- times. We hope and pray that this book help us all remember the horrors, not the glories of war, and renew our personal resolve to do what we can to work for peace and justice.
Read it, and you'll find yourself thoroughly engaged in some other worlds. Yeah, it isn't a light or easy read... but you'll be glad you read it. Precious and painful.

This collection of war diaries presents conflicts from World War I to Iraq through a lens not usually viewed - the writings of young people who are experiencing them first hand. These intimate writings relate the diarists' fears for themselves and their families and the anguish of losses they suffer. Yet each one also talks about their hopes for the future in a life without war.

The insights into history are also fascinating, as many of the diarists relate the political perspectives of the war they're living through. I find it so interesting to discover what the people in a country were thinking at the time of a war as opposed to what their leaders were saying about it publicly. And I was pleasantly surprised to find each diary very well written and the stories unfolding in a way that kept a narrative story line progressing. This must be the work of editors Zlata Filipovic and Melanie Challenger, who chose which entries of the diaries to include.

I imagine this work was particularly poignant for Filipovic, whose diary of wartime Sarajevo is included. A line from one of her entries sums up the sentiment that was a common thread among many of the diarists, "I simply don't understand it. Of course, I'm 'young' and politics are conducted by 'grown-ups.' But I think we 'young' would do it better. We certainly wouldn't have chosen war...."

A Positive, Precision Blueprint for Success!

Dr. Homer Rice, retired Director of Athletics at Georgia Tech recommended this book to me - and I'm glad he did. After reading this practical, inspiring, and entertaining work, I can understand why Dr. Rice wrote a testimonial that appears in the book. Part of his testimonial reads, "Carl has taken proven principles and presented them with a fresh, new approach... I especially suggest you spend a lot time with chapters seven (Set Goals) and eight (Visualize). Chapter seven alone is worth much, much more than the price of the book!"

Over two dozen other testimonials from such personalities as Major League Baseball manager Tony La Russa, women's basketball coach Pat Summitt, legendary entertainer Art Linkletter, businesswoman Mary Kay Ash, businessman and NBA team owner Rich DeVos, football coach Lou Holtz, and NFL Players Association Executive Director Gene Upshaw all attest to the fact that Carl Mays presents 'mile markers' on how to win and how to stay on track to win again.

What makes A Strategy For Winning stand out from among other such self-help books? Well, according to the testimonial by former LSU basketball coach Dale Brown, "There are probably thousands of books written on 'how to' do something, but very few tell you what to do after you try to do something and don't succeed. A Strategy For Winning is different because it not only tells you how to do it, but also how to pick yourself up when you get knocked down. It's a wonderful book and provides an excellent game plan to finding peace, love, happiness and success in your life." I concur with Dale Brown.

Thank you Dr. Rice for recommending A Strategy For Winning to me - and thank you Carl Mays for writing it!

I agree with Lou Holtz - great book!

Football coach and motivational speaker Lou Holtz wrote the Foreword to this book, and that is what first drew me to it. Then after I got into it, I was captivated by the author's 'down-to-earth' style and the practical suggestions and easy-to-follow guidelines he suggests. This is a how-to book. It shows the reader how to be more efficient, productive, creative and successful. The author says we all have things we can do well; we all have abilities we can tap, but sometimes we don't know where to begin. That's where A STRATEGY FOR WINNING comes in. Mays emphasizes nine principles that lead to success in business, sports, family and life. A chapter is dedicated to each of these principles: (1) self-image (2) attitude (3) creativity (4) building on failure (5) values (6) goals (7) visualization (8) teamwork and (9) overcoming procrastination.

With degrees in communication and psychology, Mays is a professional speaker who has spoken to over 2,500 businesses, sports teams and other groups, and I like the way he uses real examples to illustrate the points he makes. One of my favorite points Mays makes is, 'In the history of the world, there has been only one you. There will never be anyone else exactly like you. If you don't develop what you have, the world will never experience the contribution you could have made. The victories, the completeness, the success and the lifestyle you can achieve is only for you. And you deserve to be the best you possible.'

I highly recommend this book. It is not only a great practical instructional tool, it is a very interesting and entertaining read.

"The power of thoughts"

In the era of Internet discussions, such "virtual timetravel" Blaise Pascal sounds a very ancient thinker. However, if you ever read "Thoughts" you might see that he isn't just a religious thinker and not just a strange scientist, who loves spiritual philosophies. In "Thoughts" Pascal is teaching mankind of a way of thinking that is a privilege only to the genies. Here he shares with us what is more, then "Homo-sapiens" we created, and what is waiting us to awake ourselves of that lethargic dream we call today "terrestrial boundaries"... Great book for all times and generations so long "we" exist! Call me for more.

It is a common fallacy to assume that science and philosophy first got underway at the end of the 19th Century, and that what went before were rudimentary efforts, at best. Blaise Pascal, writing in the early 17th Century, had the capacity for profound thought, and was blessed with the ability to reveal his thinking with a clarity that would have been the envy of Hemingway. Reading his "Thoughts" left me overjoyed.

Writing stories for small children would seem to be a delicate business. If parents read to children, it's nice if a story and its illustrations stay interesting - for at least twenty reads. In addition, it's nice if an author respects a child's ability to be absorbed by an exciting (but not confusing) plot. William Steig and others figured this out. Edward Ardizzone, author and illustrator of this book, has also got it figured out. This book has terrific pen and ink drawings, watercolor-washed, and an unforgettable story. (My kids are grown, yet remember it still.) Tim and Ginger, two boys, are friends who live in an English seacoast town. Without looking for adventure, they find it. A nerve-racking realistically drawn mishap occurs, and is resolved - to the reader's satisfaction.

My children loved this series (this is the first book) when they were young. It has a comforting middle-class British sensibility throughout. Children have parents who occasionally require their presence at home or on excursions, bystanders offer help, people meet at tea-time, and if you get wet you warm yourself, later, by the fire. People get frightened, feel sad, and recover and laugh.

The story has a neat plot that parents reading to young children will enjoy. It's never cloying. The drawings are wonderful, and contribute perfectly to the mood and the message of the story. People come to one another's aid in fresh and interesting ways. There is no preaching, though, in this neat adventure story for kids - ages five and up.

When my daughter was very young, I borrowed Tosca's Christmas from the local library. It became one of her favorite stories. For several years, we observed a tradition of checking the book out of the library prior to Christmas each year. Last fall, after she left for her freshman year at college, I ordered a hardback copy of the book from the internet and surprised her for Christmas. It was a joyous reunion!

Beautifully drawn

Tosca's Christmas is full of Anne Mortimer's beautiful, lifelike illustrations of a very real-looking and acting pleasingly-plump tabby. It paints a somewhat realistic picture of Christmas from a cat's perspective -- all that unwelcome commotion, and not being allowed to actively participate when there is something fun to do (like wrapping oneself in giftwrap). The artwork alone makes buying the book worthwhile. Anne Mortimer's cats are always more realistic than any other illustrator's -- the cat's markings aren't symmetrical, and you know she knows this cat as well as you know your own.

A valuable resource

In this much-needed reprinting of Benn Pitman's transcript of the trial of the "conspirators" to assassinate President Lincoln, a new element has been added in the articles in the front. Although the trial itself remains, unfortunately, unannotated, a variety of top scholars in the field contributed articles on the conspirators and the trial itself which are both helpful & interesting. This is certainly one of the best purchases I have ever made. The list of witnesses that make Pitman the preferred version of the trial, and the charming print style left as-is, make for an enjoyable read or for helpful reference material. However, it should be kept in mind that Pitman's version is an edited copy of the original trial, with the dialogue surrounding each witness reduced to monolouge testimony, and some confusing areas eliminated or altered. Nonetheless, this is a valuable resource.

I would recommend accompanying this book with Carmen Cumming's Devil's Game: The Civil War Intrigues of Charles A. Dunham, which helps the reader understand the confusing testimony of Sanford Conover, the alias of Charles Dunham.

The best reading on this subject I have seen so far.

In 1865 President Lincoln was assassinated by John Wilkes Booth, this is commonly known by most people. But what is not known is that there were eight others who had a part in the conspiracy to kill the president.

Unlike the other books I have read on the subject; this one has very little plot, in fact the book spends more time talking about the trial rather than the events leading to the assassination. Rather the author has put together the actual court transcripts of the testimony against each of the conspirators.

After reading the text, which took about 5 hours, I learned more about those involved and even found out a few new things along the way. I found the discussion about Dr. Mudd so intriguing I spent several hours on the internet reading about him.

I found the book well documented and researched. The author has certainly seemed to leave no stone unturned. Overall this book is the best overall presentation into the murder and conspiracy I have read so far.

If you are looking for serious information about the Lincoln Assassination or just wondering what happened than this book is the place to start looking.

This is the most readable and free translation of The Uddhava Gita that I have encountered. While The Bhagavadgita is a teaching imparted on the battlefield to a young an agitated Arjuna by a young Charioteer -Krishna, The Uddhava Gita is a teaching imparted by an aged and dying Krishna to an old friend Uddhava. The teaching in both the occasions are similar. The teaching is imparted by the use of great imagery, stories and parables. The language and the style make reading very enjoyable. Swamy Ambikananda Saraswathi does a fantastic job of inspiring readers.

This book is a very readable translation by the female swami ambikanda saraswati of a very important hindu text. Very valuable for scholars of religion but definitely also for the sincere seeker. A text that is a mixture of bahkti (devotion) and more advaita (non-dualism) inspired passages. Definitely a must for everyone interested in indian religion.
