I ordered the copy of Monets house and inadvertently entered the wrong address. The shipper kept me updated and sent me the book as soon as the post office returned it to them. I was very impressed with the service of the bookseller.

A visual treat for the eye created by Impressionist Monet.

The impressionist master,Monet's home represents a palette of vibrant color harmonies, and light fused into a radiant home of personal warmth and beauty. A perfect setting for the lush gardens flourishing outside. A full view of the rooms, that made Monet's house truly an artists abode with its elegant, yet simple furnishings.

Jan is an angel. When will she stop by for tea?

Jan is an angel. If her personal life contains even 1/10th of the positivity that permeates her books for children, you would wish her to babysit your dearest, most protected children. Nice alter-egos of Jan's books are attractive to adults, including an amazing illustrative storytelling skil and, perhaps, easy status as conversation pieces for their lack of words.

My daughter loves these books. I love reading them to her. Every day, I wonder why great authors like Jan aren't in print for easy access by today's children.

Enchanting sequel

What a shame this delightful book is out of print - do try to get a copy if you can!

This is a sequel to 'Sunshine' by the same author. It is a picture book without any words, so the story can change slightly, be built with the words of your child and yourself. The small girl lives with her parents, has dinner, "helps" with the washing up, has a bath and gets ready for bed. Dad tucks her in and reads a book, then goes into the living room with Mum. The little girl, however, cannot settle to sleep, and there are a few things going "bump" in the night, and a need for a last minute glass of water!

The illustrations in this book are PERFECT. The expressions and physical attitudes, as well as the events are easily recognised by anyone with kids.

At time the sequences are like a comic strip - conveying small shifts in the narrative. This illustrator has observed young children I am sure....

This book was for a very long time a bedtime favourite with my son, from about age 2 on.

Once again, Geary takes a complicated crime and presents it in an understandable -- and very enjoyable & redable -- level.

"Popular" history as it ought to be done

This is the seventh in a very high-quality series that includes Lizzie Borden, Jack the Ripper, H. H. Holmes, and Charles Guiteau. Think of it as "Classics Illustrated" for adults. Geary's black-and-white crow-quill drawing style fits perfectly his carefully narrated history of the sixty-two days between Lincoln's second Inauguration and his entombment in Springfield, by way of the assassination plot, the unsuccessful attacks on Johnson and Seward, Booth's convenient escape, and his death in Garrett's tobacco barn. I've long thought there was more there than meets the eye, with the focus on the peculiar actions of Stanton, both before and after Ford's Theater, and the author mentions those points in passing, but he sticks pretty close to the official train of events. An excellent piece of work.

This book has become a fast favorite in my preschool classroom. There is a lot that can be done with voices and dramatic play (acting out the story, dressing up in costumes, using puppets), and the children absolutely adore the repititious phrases. Though it's a pumpkin story, it's not Halloween based, so it can be used year-round. Many many literacy extensions can be built off this story as well. Last but not least, it's incredibly fun to read as the teacher!

Great book for children from 3 to 7

This book tells a similar story of the fairy tale "Little Red Riding Hood" but with very interesting culture differences. One twist to the plot is that the grandmother visits her granddaughter and she meets three different animals (a wolf, a bear and a tiger) on her way to her granddaughter's house.

My two children like this story but my 3 year old son dearly loves it. The illustrations are colorful and the story line is cute but predictable. (I think that is why my son loves it and has almost memorized it). I would not be a bit surprised if this book becomes a new classic.

Excellent analysis & meditation of events from November.

A few years ago I ran upon a book titled: "Gettysburg: A Meditation on War and Values" by Kent Gramm. Being a history teacher and Civil War enthusiast, I bought the book and devoured it. I use it as a guide on my annual trip to Gettysburg. I was always wondering when Mr. Gramm would publish a new book. Well, the wait is over. "November" picks up where "Gettysburg" left off. This book is excellent for students of the Civil War and general history enthusiasts alike. Mr. Gramm uses Lincoln's Gettysburg Address and the month of November as a starting point for his interpretations of several key events in history, both in America and in the world. Included in his analysis are JFK's assasination, the death of C.S. Lewis, the Holocaust, RFK's impact on America, and the Vietnam War. Mr. Gramm also traces his family history and writes eloquetly about how his ancestry fits into the larger canvas of American history. Using Lincoln's famous words, Mr. Gramm paints a portrait of the deeper meanings of our identity as Americans, our history, and our place in the world. This is not a work of history in the tradition of batte narratives or campaign overviews. Rather, it is a moving, deep and touching look at the heartbeat and soul of the America that Lincoln spoke about in November 1863 and how it applies to us in the 21st century. As you read this excellent book, you will be reminded of Lincoln's gift of eloquence. The month of November has witnessed numerous key events in the history of America and the world. Thanks to Mr. Gramm and his magnificent book, these events have taken on a deeper, more spirtiual meaning to me. I recommend this book without hesitation or reservation.

An amazing achievement

Kent Gramm's latest book, November, Lincoln's Elegy at Gettysburg, is a remarkable achievement. This work contains a profound series of meditations on history, loss, values, idealism, and patriotism, inspired by Gramm's sojourn, throughout the month of one November, in and around Gettysburg. Although his search for the exact spot where Lincoln delivered the Gettysburg address is the ostensible reason for his visit there, this quest - and his determination to reflect each day on what Lincoln had been doing on each day of November 1963 (leading up to and following the delivery of the address) - actually provide a touchstone for reflections both wide and deep on our country's history, and the standards to which we must hold ourselves. World War I, Vietnam, World War II, the Civil War, the assassination of JFK, the life of Robert Kennedy, Martin Luther and Martin Luther King, modernism and postmodernism, and the loss of beloved parents, all provide topics for thoughtful rumination. This book is profound, absorbing, inspiring, poetic, and deeply moving. It is a book you will want to revisit, and from which you will find yourself reading aloud to friends.

A masterful guide to designing a better world

Review Date: 2002-12-25
In 1970 I taught from this book when it was entitled
"Choice, Communication and Conflict"

What makes this book "magical" is Ackoff (from his
management and behavioral science roots) provides
"operational definitions" for many ill-defined words
and concepts -- from defining 'knowledge' & 'understanding'
to providing definitions of feelings/emotions that --
operationally -- you know -- that if certain events take
place in a person's life, that you know the feeling they
have.

This is only a glimmer of what this book is about. In
terms of Kuhn's idea of "paradigm shifts" -- this book
represents a shift that has yet to be appreciated, thirty
years later !

Set in South Africa in the desert, this lovely and familiar story of a child who has difficulty reading, is an enjoyable read with a message. The language and artwork are gentle and flowing, the message to keep trying and to be kind to others who are struggling, is predictable but important. It was an excellent bedtime read for my children who are 6 and 9 years old, we will buy it (it is on loan from the library).

A must have in every elementary classroom!

I teach a children's literature class at a state university and a student shared this in class today. I was so moved by her retelling of the story and knew I must have it in my collection. Students who are struggling with reading will identify with the feelings of the main character and the relationship between the child and grandmother is magical. It reminds me of another must-have book, Thank You, Mr. Falker by Patricia Polacco.

Out for the Count is the kind of book that wins in all respects. The prose is accessible but not over simplified. The pictures are dramatic but with a touch of humour. The story is simple;while the tension develops to a (hopefully)pleasing conclusion. It combines an interesting story with an opportunity to develop counting skills. It can be read and re-read without ever losing its special appeal. My first son,Tom,who is now nearly 12,grew up surrounded by books, from an early age. "Out for the Count",featuring his namesake,in all kinds of dicey, imaginary situations stood out as his favourite bedtime read. It helped to ignite a love of books that has led him to challenging literature of many kinds. I have no hesitation in recommending this book for children from 5 to 8/9 years.

Desirable!

Review Date: 2008-01-04
This slim but large, almost square format publication is written by Lincoln Kirsten, who according to the introduction "has been intimate with Cadmus's (sic) art for half a century . . . and forty years ago marrying Paul's sister . . ."; so he ought to know his stuff! The intelligent, well written text is certainly illuminating, and discusses Cadmus' work in detail; it is however a little pretentious in tone at times. In addition to the commentary there are many quotations from Paul Cadmus, and occasionally other sources running throughout the book. These are clearly identified appearing when they do in italics in a narrow column to the side of the page. The book concludes with a Complete Catalogues of Painting 1931-1992, partly illustrated with small black and white reproductions; a list of selected exhibitions and works in public collections; and a bibliography.

This reprint of the 1984 edition contains over 150 paintings, etchings and drawings, with 86 pages of full colour, often with more than one image to the page. It includes all of Cadmus' paintings since 1984. The interesting page layout with narrow margins does lend a very busy appearance to the page, compounded by the often hectic composition of Cadmus' work. This is perhaps one artist who would benefit from the current trend of presenting the image in plenty of white space. It does at least attempt to present the images on the same page as they are discussed in the text.

As for the reproductions there is only one word: splendid. The images are crisp and bright and the colours strong, with the drawings sensitively presented in colour too. The pictures are frequently as large as the page will allow with some full page bleed or even double page. This all adds to the tantalising and provocative nature of the artist's work, making them very desirable indeed.

Gorgeous!!!

Beats Norman Rockwell hands down!!

from the front jacket flap of the 1992 Chameleon Book edition

Paul Cadmus, the American representional artist, has worked continually for six decades in a style that transcends prevailing fashion. A master of classic design, form and technique, he has created a small but impressive body of work reflecting his unique and powerful vision of the human condition.
