This delightful little book cites excerpts of Latin poetry by Ovid, Catullus, Vergil, and Horace, which are matched with translations by such venerable English poets as John Dryden, Alexander Pope, William Wordsworth and Richard Lovelace. On the facing pages are lovely reproductions of frescoes and mosaics, mostly recovered from Pompeii. You'll find some famous quotations, for example this from Horace, "They are not long, the days of wine and roses: Out of a misty dream/Our path emerges for a while, then closes/Within a dream." It would make a nice gift for a literary friend--or for yourself to take along to the park on a lazy summer afternoon.

I studied with Robin several years ago and he is not only a lovely man but a gifted teacher. I now work for one of the largest plantscapers on the east coast, in large part because of Robin's expert tutelage. (Thank you Robin!) Just about anyone that is interested in garden planning and design will benefit from this book. I heartily recommend it!

The Garden Planner is an excellent book and it is one that serves a definite purpose, i.e., how to get started with garden/landscape design.
While there is much written on landscape design, there is not all that much on how to get started actually doing it. I am a member of the APLD, Association of Professional Landscape Designers. I taught landscape-gardening for a dozen years and I write garden books myself (Allergy-Free Gardening, Safe Sex in the Garden, Ten Speed Press) and I have a large collection of garden landscape books. Many of these books were presents and although interesting, many are not all that useful. But this one is highly useful.
The author, Robin Williams (not the actor!) is an experienced designer and is skilled at explaining how to do it, how to get started, how to end up with something to be proud of. In garden/landscape design there are certain principles for success and they are all well covered here. I would recommend this book to anyone wanting to get started doing landscape design. I would also recommend it to people who are already designers as I think even they would be pleasantly surprised.

A STUNNING JOURNAL OF GARDENS AND PARKS

Todd Longstaffe-Gowan, Gardens Adviser to Hampton Court Palace and Vice Chairman of the London Historic Parks and Gardens Trust, and photographer Vivian Russell have combined their considerable talents to offer readers, most especially garden enthusiasts, a stunning journal of the gardens and parks at Hampton Court Palace.
Not only is Hampton Court an historic landscape covering 2,000 acres, bounded on its south and east sides by the River Thames, it is also a site of great antiquity indicating that there were settlements in the site dating back to the Bronze Age. However the estate began to form very much as it is seen today in 1086. It was in 1514 that Hampton Court was leased by Cardinal Wolsey, until he became persona non grata at court and was forced to leave by Henry VIII.
As soon as the estate was under his care Henry began a 20 year building, the like of which had not been seen. Since that time various royals have left their marks upon the estate as it has been used as a guest house. Queen Victoria declared that the palace "should be thrown open to all her subjects without restriction, and without fee or gratuity of any kind.." While this order was not deemed wise by many, the palace did become a popular vacation resort.
The gardens were neglected during World War I, but by 1919 improvements were being overseen by a committee of horticultural and landscape garden experts. Since the early 1990s major restoration work has taken place within the palace which has been coordinated with landscape improvements. Today, the estate stands as a "great emblem and monument of English history," and attracts over a million visitors every year.
Thanks to Longstaffe-Gowan and Russell for making it also available to armchair travelers.

A well organised and attractively produced book giving a scholarly account of the history of these magnificent and much loved Gardens. Hampton Court Palace is the finest of English Renaissance gardens and of great importance to any student of horticulture and garden or landscape history.
The avenues and the venerable ancient trees of the parks along with the even older pruned and pleached trees of the formal gardens are among the treasures of the gardens. Along with the newly restored privy garden, the statuary and the architecture these are well illustrated with photos and drawings ancient and modern

This book is a collection of aeriel photographs of famous european gardens. It includes gardens from the Alhambra up through Italy, France, Germany, Great Britain, Ireland, Russia, etc. There is basic info about the gardens, but this is primarily a picture book. I have been to several of the gardens included and it is wonderful to be able to see them in a new perspective. You get to see the patterns large scale, the axis used for structure, etc. I love it! The book and pictures are oversized.

Was paging through this book just yesterday in a local bookstore. It is spectacular! The photos are of top quality, and all from above--of some of the finest gardens one could find. We spotted several that we had been to, and it was wonderful to see them from a fresh perspective. If you love photographs of beautiful gardens, buy this book!

As a serious midwestern home gardener who owns many gardening books, I was extremely pleased with this book. There is much valuable information in the way of photographs and writings. Gertrude Jekyll was doing 100 yrs ago, what modern landscapers claim they invented--that is, low maintenance, informal looks. The combination of her informal plantings applied to formal settings makes a wonderfully interesting contrast. Add to that her artistic genius, and these gardens are truly awe-inspiring.

Over the centuries during and since Rome ruled the Western world, Roman gardens and villas were copied - while they were extant, and then again when they were rediscovered in ruins. Designs from the grounds at Hadrian's villa in Tivoli, frescos depicting the gardens of the House of the Golden Bracelet unearthed in Pompeii, and the excavated grounds of Tiberius' villa at Sperlonga all indicate the Romans garnered ideas from ancient Persia, Greece, Egypt and elsewhere and in turn provided the inspiration for designs executed in later centuries by other artists.
Under the tutelage of Rome, structures and grounds such as those at the Villa Brioni in Croatia, Sabratha, Leptis Magna in Libya, and outposts in Morocco, Tunisia, England were developed as part of the Roman experience. This book suggests these structures and others are related to the "Great Houses"of 18th Century England, the Alhambra in Spain, and the J.Paul Getty Museum in Malibu.
This beautiful book, containing hundreds of color photos, captures the essence of THE GARDENS OF THE ROMAN WORLD -- Another fine art book for your collection.

I loved this book. It demonstrated for me the real "art" of gardening. William Morris was a clever and far sighted man who advocated staying within the parameters of nature and natural beauty when making gardens. He also perpetuated the "garden room" theme which has been enormously popular since the eighteeth century. I refer to this book continuously and strive to design and construct garden rooms in my own garden which are as beautiful.

I really like this story because it has the President Abraham Lincoln in it. The story has a little girl who wants the president to grow a beard so that he would look more handsome and to free the slaves from freedom and they won't have to be sold to people.

This book is a very interesting way to read about U.S. history during the times before the Civil War. It is based on the true story of a young girl who wants to help Lincoln get elected in order to stop slavery. Many important details of the time period help to make the reader understand what life was like then. It also includes photos of the actual letters written between Grace and Mr. Lincoln.

If this book were fiction, it would rank up there with The War of The Worlds for exciting reading-BUT IT ISN'T. This insane incident occured and the [people] involved got a very short prison sentence for almost kdnaping the president's body to get a counterfeiter out of jail! I won't reveal anything, but get this book-it's [a good price] and reads like a great mystery, but it all happened in 1879 and its all true and all unbelievable!!
This book deserves a place on the shelves of Lincolniana.

This revised edition of the Great Abraham Lincoln Hijack, story of the 1876 attempt to steal President Lincoln's body, first published in 1990, is footnoted with foreword by Thomas F. Schwartz, Illinois State Historian. Bonnie Speer has made a notable contribution to Lincoln literature and this study deserves a place on the shelves of Lincolniana. It is most readable and factual. To start with this is a small book that is easy to carry around and not daunting to read through. The hardback version is durable enough for many reads.
The Latin poems chosen for inclusion are all top notch selections and become richer with meaning each time they are read. The English versions of the Latin poems are equally as beautiful as the originals since they are not literal translations, but artful expressions of the same sentiments as the original poems.
The artwork included in the book consists of high resolution pictures of ancient frescoes. This artwork is visually pleasing, varied and has been thoughtfully chosen to evoke ideas conveyed in the poems on the adjacent pages.
If you are looking for a comprehensive anthology of Latin poetry or literal translations, this is not the book for you. If you are looking for a sweet little book of poetry that will touch your heart and mind, then look no further. With the three languages of Art, Latin and English at your fingertips you will definitely be well on your way to enjoying your own fine little book.
