The Book for those interested in Abraham Lincoln

This is the way that the world saw Abraham Lincoln. The photos, the statues, the hundreds of items produced after his death. Besides a book for collectors, this is a socialogical study of the diefication of a man. Recently, hundreds of thousands of people turned out for Princess Diana's funeral. When Lincoln died, a greater percentage of the population turned out for the many funeral processions. Lincoln's body was takend from city to city to satisfy the public's need to mourn. The variety and volume of items commemorating Lincoln is incredible.

LINCOLN IS SIMPLY THE BEST!!!!!!!

This book is very useful for people who want to grow herbs and know what they are used for. The first section of the book lists all the herbs alphabetically by latin name. There is a drawing of the plant along with a description of what it's used for and how to grow it. Since the author is British all the growing information relates to that country and has to be reinterpreted for the U.S. Take care if the book says will over winter etc. (like Rosemary which is a shrub in the UK but won't survive in the northern states). There is also a section on poisonous herbs so you know what to avoid or take care with.
The next section is a small overview of growing herbs in your garden which again has to be reinterpreted but is good general information.
There is a nice section on cooking with herbs, it's not comprehensive and many other books which deal specifically with cooking with give more information but it's a good starter. It also has a section on making herb drinks including wines and beers which is interesting.
It then goes on to detail how to explain how to use herbs in the home, making candles, pot pourri, using herbs to clean with and making fabric dyes. Lastly there is a section on cosmetic use for herbs and information on how to make infusions, decoctions and macerations. Lots of recipes for bath waters, skin and hair care. The final section on health is very short and not very comprehensive. However as an overall book it's very good. I especially like the herbal listings at the front of the book and the home herbs section the rest is just a bonus for me.
As an overall informative book on herbs especially if you want to identify and grow them it's excellent. If you want a cookery book or a herb health book this won't help that much.

Lincoln and Douglas really stood before people and said the things documented in this book. Lincoln changed his interpretation of black-white relations to suit his target audience. With no national press available to put his feet to the fire, any candidate could change his opinions at any time to seek votes.

Douglas, although he was the same man throughout the campaign, had distasteful views to our modern perspective. Only white Christian men had anything worthwhile to offer society. Everyone else was an unpleasant burden for them to suffer with (noblesse oblige).

When I started to read the speeches, I expected Lincoln to be the obvious winner in the debates. He's a winner to me, but by a much smaller margin than anticipated. Anyone who wants to know history from the mouths of the actual players should read this book.

It is always instructive to go to original sources. These debates set Lincoln solidly on the way to the presidency. It was the first time that national newspaper coverage of a "local contest" had a role in defining national difficulties. Lincoln comes across as a passive opponent of slavery, nothing of an abolishonist. Douglas unabasedly draws distictions between the "superior" White race and all other "inferior" races, which GOT CHEERS from the crowd. This is the actual history not some sanitized version of events.

This is a beautiful book . . . the crop circle photographs are meditations in and of themselves . . . their beauty transcends all logical concerns for their origins. Perusing these pictures diminishes the media controversy to abject pettiness: The heart is filled. The mind is stilled. I merely give thanks.

It is an excellent read. The authors took the Lincoln assassination and by moving the facts a few degrees gave it a whole new perspective. The authors obviously did mountains of research to make the story and characters as historically correct as possible. Character development is great and I had trouble putting the book down.

A Fast-paced Civil War Thriller

Review Date: 2005-04-22
Almost since the moment Abraham Lincoln was assassinated in 1865, writers and historians have argued about the possibility of Confederate involvement in the president's killing. A large part of the issue has centered on whether the South stood to gain anything by Lincoln's death - at least in the minds of those high up in the Jefferson Davis administration. Though we may never reach a consensus, there is much to recommend the argument that the South was better off with Abraham Lincoln alive than dead. This is the underlying assumption of this new and exciting novel by J. Mark Powell and L. D. Meagher.

In The Curse of Cain, Powell and Meagher put a new twist on the Lincoln conspiracy. In their version of the story, the assassination is indeed the result of Southern malfeasance. But the chief instigator, a Confederate congressman, is actually a loose cannon, and when his own government learns that he has hired an assassin to eliminate Lincoln, they send an agent to find the killer before he brings the "Curse of Cain" down upon them all.

Powell and Meagher have built their story around a plausible idea, and have constructed a well-paced narrative with just the right mix of action and intrigue. Their heroes include the Confederate agent, Kate St. Claire, who spends her time cultivating contacts in the upper strata of Washington society; and Jack Tanner, a no-nonsense detective in the Confederate provost guard. Their villains are Basil Tarleton, a cold-blooded killer; and John Wilkes Booth, his reluctant cohort who wants only to capture the president. These people move about in a deadly game of cat and mouse, each team set against the other, but both with the ultimate goal of saving the Confederacy.

The Curse of Cain is a fast-paced adventure with heart-stopping action and surprises at every turn. It is a great read, and would make an excellent addition to any collection of Civil War literature.

The postmodern Kierkegaard

First things first: I am not in the habit of reading "Christian pamphlets." But I picked up this book based on its well-balanced and irresistible design. What I found inside, after only a quick peek, was the wisdom of an existential philosopher schooled equally on Jean Paul Sartre and the Detroit gospel temple. Swain's tough and ultra-real journey through life in a postmodern world--from the pimped-out Cadillac to the tennis club--speaks not only to readers of "Christian pamphlets," but also to readers of serious philosophy and cultural studies. From page one I was taken with the "powerful Swain self-confidence," and I went along for the ride as he professed a new dogma of "agape": "a secret agent against hate, fear and isolation."

Swain will remind you of the terrible reality that you are indeed free to do as you please. This is the terror of freedom, which can only be relieved (or repressed) once you adhere to this or that belief system. But if you keep your wits about you, you will get the gist of Swain, and choose to live in the terror of freedom, finding relief from your own benevolent actions.

Long live Swain.

I really liked the preface by the author. "Forget Lincoln Swain. Think about Jesus." In this small book, he tried to cover various aspects of Christial life, and the attempt was successful. The author's view on many issues are strikingly balanced and very logical. In this age, such a logically balanced view is quite imiportant and - I feel - quite rare to find in Christian community.
Well, being logical itself is not against Jesus.

He has done all of those efforts to be a true witness of the LORD. To be a 'True' witness, we have to know many things, at least. What are they? Read this book.

I wish I would have been handed this book when I was diagnosed with diabetes. A lot of my frustrations were addressed, as well as healthy ideas for foods to eat.

All in all, I loved this book, and plan on passing it on to my friends and family so they can see what it's like on this end of the lancet.

As the book title states, this is an excellent resource .

This book has innovative recipies for the diabetic and her friends, that are clever and tasty enough to be, actually, something you would want to prepare and eat. Ms. Meirelles is a Diabetic Educator. She gives witty and very entertaining talks to diabetic support groups in and around Oregon. Her husband is her assistant. She educates the the non-diabetic away from many of the fears and false impressions about being diabetic. She shows us how to let the diabetic decide for herself what and when she can eat, because she is capable of doing so. We diabetics get weary of others getting on our case! Her recipie books are the result taste testing of the recipies by herself and her husband . She claims she publishes only the ones he likes!

Looking for a good mystery/ghost story? THE DREADFUL REVENGE OF ERNEST GALLEN will be a satisfying read.

Young Eugene "Gene" Richards feels a tightness in his chest. Then there is a strange sensation, like a motion wiggling in his center. What follows is the scariest thing - a voice begins to speak to Gene from somewhere inside.

Over the course of a few weeks, the strange feeling and the internal voice continue to visit Gene. The voice tells him a frightening tale. Gene learns that his beloved grandfather may have committed some unthinkable crime. According to the voice, back when Gene was very young, his grandfather and some other men in the small town of Magnolia got involved in a "get rich quick" scheme that ended in the lynching of a young man. It is beginning to appear that the voice haunting Gene's thoughts is the ghost of that young man looking for revenge.

At the same time Gene is wrestling with the mysterious voice and whether or not to involve his good friends, Sonny and Sam, Sonny's dad is killed in a freak accident, and Sam's dad is injured in an equally strange car accident. As the trio begins to dig into the mysteries of the past, they find numerous reasons to connect their fathers and Gene's grandfather to the vengeful ghost.

Although set in the years of the depression, readers will relate to the young detectives as they do their research at the local newspaper office and ask probing questions of reluctant relatives. Their persistence pays off as the mystery unfolds, and readers will keep turning the pages to learn the answers. THE DREADFUL REVENGE OF ERNEST GALLEN is an excellent choice for any middle grade collection.

I first took this book out of the library to share the Easter story with my daughters, ages 3 and 4. They just loved the illustrations. These made the story so alive to them they wanted to kiss away the hurt they thought Jesus was feeling. It was great to see the stained glass-like art work while reading the elegant words from the King James Bible. This book is a must for any parent trying to figure out how to present this story to young kids in a beautiful yet realistic way.

The stain-glass like illustrations and the King James text make this picture book appropriately sacred. Although the story is told briefly, many key details are nonetheless included. For example, the text mentions the last supper, doubting Thomas, and several of Christ Jesus' appearances after the resurrection, including the morning meal at the sea of Tiberias. This book is an excellent choice for parents and grandparents who want to be sure their children are biblically literate.
