A survey of Aboriginal involvement in Australian film from 1968 to 1993

This is the most unusual compendium I have ever read - as much a personal diary as a list of productions. Even though it only covers the period up to 1993, this book is a must-read for researchers in Australian indigenous media studies.

Brian Syron was, by report, an over-the-top flamboyant personality, and this character clearly shines through in his writing style. Brian directed the first feature length indigenous production (Jindalee Lady) in 1992.

I understand Brian's nephew, Danny, is currently working on a project to bring Brian's survey up to date. As there has been significantly more indigenous film productions since 1994, this new research will be quite big.

GUIDE TO THE BAYOU CITY

For whatever reason this guide is not nearly as thorough as the Marmac guide to Dallas. Houston, though larger, seems to get the short shrift. Having said that the guide is well put together and most of the reviews hit their mark, but it does not have all the great gossip and trivia the Dallas guide has and frankly Houston has just as much dish. Houston is a great town, with lots to do and deserved a better tour, but if you need some history and a solid travel guide to H Town, then I do recommend this book, but Big D gets the better workup.

A Pleasing Alaskan Adventure
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2000-02-20
"A Night Without End" is an Alaskan-set romantic mystery that should entertain fans of that exotic locale and action-packed romances. Sean McCabe is stunned to discover the body of his foster father and mentor in the mine they're both working, and even more shocked at the woman he finds next to the body. Recognizing her as Carlie Myers, the widow of one of his best friends, he believes her when she says she's not the killer, but her amnesia prevents her from naming the true murderer. Thinking quickly, he keeps her from being arrested by claiming she's his wife, not bothering to tell Carlie it's not true. He thinks it's the only way to keep her out of jail and protect her from the killer, an idea that proves to be true when the attempts on her life begin.

Yes, another amnesia book (but who's looking for innovation from Intrigue, anyway? This is the line that makes all their books the same boring color while leaving the design the same and calls it a "new cover look." Instead, it's a pretty good statement about how they're trying to make these books exactly the same.). Fortunately, author Susan Kearney packs enough action sequences in her story to distract from that too-familiar plot element and some of the more far-fetched aspects of her plot. From an avalanche to a plane crash, Kearney keeps her characters, and readers, on their toes at all times. Carlie is also a nicely strong-willed heroine. She may have lost her memory, but she hasn't lost her will, or her brains. Watching her face the dangers thrown their way with just as much courage as Sean is one of the book's delights.

The mystery is pretty well done, all of the suspects equally suspicious throughout. As a hero, Sean is to-die-for, and the romance packs plenty of passion, even if the idea that the relationship between these two is going to last is a bit unearned. In spite of an unnecessary prologue, which adds nothing, most of "A Night Without End" is suspenseful and engaging. This is an entertaining tale that is bound to keep readers dreaming about those cold Alaskan nights.

Too simple for real insight

This book was the text for my college speech course, along with another text. I personally found it too simple to gain any significant knowledge. It states the obvious and gives oversimplified examples. It would serve well as a high school course, but not college.

Not Preachy at All

I spent the day in my backyard reading, meditating, and enjoying the breeze. I found this book just the ticket to inspire my own thoughts and dialogues with God. I was not a disbeliever...I'd just lost my relationship somewhere along life's journey. My shoulders were exhausted from carrying the load myself, but I wasn't sure how to re-connect with God so he can help carry the load. Somehow today...I managed to do just that.

This book doesn't preach.

It is what it is. A book of interviews w/ various people who have managed to connect w/ God after all kinds of odds.

It's poetic in nature and I found myself cheering with several featured writers as I identified with their challenges and triumphs.

If you're not sure where to turn, if the church seems like a waste of time, or you just want to listen to someone else's life for awhile...give this book a glance. I read it cover to cover in one day...and it helped me change my outlook on many things in my own life.

Not what I expected

This book is not written by Anne Lamont. It has a FORWARD (2 pages) by Anne Lamont. I found the focus of the book to be on recovery, which is a kind of spirituality, but not something that works for everybody. Didn't work for me.

A bit of a jumble

What a great topic, and what a promising title. Sadly, though, the authors are never able to draw tight the numerous strands they attempt to follow through the book, with the result that it seems at the end to be a hodgepodge of anecdote and heaped-up observation contributing nothing to a cogent argument. What is even sadder is that given the current state of academic publishing in this country, this is likely to be the only work published on the subject for a long time.

Do not pay to download this article. Why, with the wealth of material on Ovid, would anyone charge for this review? Or worse, pay for it, as I did. The review skims through various versions of Metamorphosis without any compelling points to make, giving no sense of the argument of the book. This article does not even mention Ted Hughes, who is named in the title. The review spends one paragraph on the 18th c. and makes only superficial comments about Shakesepeare. You would do better to buy the book than buy this review. Had the review been free, I would have been much more charitable. But not for $5.95.
