I have learned a great deal from this book about how to work, step by step, on getting into great shape. Most bodybuilding books and magazine programs are not starting from the ground up and taking you all the way through like this one does. Not only does it give you great routines, but it also has excellent information about nutrition, motivation, and competition tips. Yes, it is an older book, and as with every program, you may need to make modifications based on your personal strengths and weaknesses. However, this book is a great place to start! I recommend this book for all types of bodybuilders, from the novice on up.

The author does an excellent job detailing 40-plus years of amateur basketball history in a long-ago era that preceded today's "all-about-money" NBA. It is interesting to note that many of the great players of that time wound up with successful careers working for the companies for which they played basketball--Denver Central Bankers, Akron Goodyears, Peoria Caterpillars, Bartlesville Phillips 66,etc. As one who grew up watching those teams, I have to think that sports today would better off today with the old National Industrial Basketball League than the $100 million contracts we now have.

Classic and Inspiring Work on Bodyweight Exercise

This book explains how Hershel Walker worked out as young man with nothing but pushups, pull-ups, and running to get in great physical shape for football. The story is inspiring because it shows that fancy equipment and gym memberships are not needed to get in great shape. All you need is desire and consistency to DO these basic exercises.
The book includes a workout schedule that is designed to increase effort over time. You will have to find a pull-up bar to do the program.
I bought the book on Amazon and paid a collector's price, but it was well worth it. I gave the book to my boys and it inspired them to do push-ups and pull-ups in their room every night before going to bed.

One of the state's best sportswriters ever, Bob Hammel of the Bloomington Herald-Times, spends 1996-97 traveling around Indiana to watch various HS basketball games in the final season of single class basketball in Indiana. As an opponent of the multiclass system now being implemented, Hammel is still fair to the proponents, yet he pulls no punches. If you're a fan of Delta,Bloomington North, Kokomo or the LaPorte Slicers (all of whom made it to the final Final 4), you need this book as one final souvenir of a memorable season.

I thought the book was very helpful to me being that I am a track and feild athlete. It increased my vertical almost 7 inches in about 6 weeks. All I had to do was to keep eating somewhat healthy foods and do the programs the book recommeneded and my vertical went way up.

This is a good book which takes scientific aproach to running. I wouldn't recommend this to anyone who's new to running as a guidebook but for those athletes who want to know why they really train by doing intervals or long runs. It also tries point out what research has proved to work and what doesn't work. I would've expected a bit more information on the training on how to use this info in practic.

The Great Miler's Word on his Career

An enjoyable read on the former world record holders running career particularly his HS phenomenal success to his tragic fall at Munich. Wish that Ryun could have experienced the atheletic sponsorship of today instead of being forced to bag groceries to train and to go pro in the failed pro track venture. He also talks of his religous experience and his self critique which is hard to ever buy that Ryun was ever a bad person. Got mine autographed at the Shamrock Marathon in VA. Beach. I still love the an exciting "Jim Ryun Story" by Coorder Nelson. That book is exciting read of the competetiveness of younster Ryun running against the great Peter Snell, Kip Keino and the American Jim Grelle. The action photographs are thrilling. Would be great to have both books.

A very good book that provides exercises for each part of the body. The interesting angle about this book is the use of a power rack in doing the exercises. With some ingenuity I think the movements can be duplicated using rope, self-resistance, or sticks,or combinatons of. Very well illustrated and the author was a coach at the Virginia Military Institute.

any physical advantage proves it.
There are various tried and good programs/split routines for the non-competitive and competitive bodybuilders. Good tips on diet and on common sense healthy living, very actual even though the book was published in '82. Over all the book is pretty complete and is a good example on how they trained in the past.
The only funny thing is that in some routines, unlike Arnold in his Encyclopedia of modern bodybuilding, Franco omits a few power movements which are essential to give the bodybuilder that muscle density. He more than Arnold was famous for his extremely heavy deadlifts.
