Jerry Lynch does a very good job of describing how coaches in a variety of sports have used creative coaching to motivate either their teams or individuals. He provides practices ways for teams and individuals to succeed in their sport. It is not a difficult read as the reader can relate to the players, situations and the problems one may have in coaching. This book is good for the minor sports coach as well as the professional.

This book offers good solid advice in how to deal with adolescent women. I was very pleased that it exists at all, as very few resources are geared specifically for women.

Technically, it's a little on the general side, but I did find some things that I am adapting to my club's workouts.

All in all, an easy read.

Practical Information for the professional
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2007-04-10
I purchased this book to become part of a group of supporting materials for a presentation at a conference on recovery in fitness. The book is written on a college level as a text. The information is practical and supported by research. The recovery questionaire can be broken down into simpler parts to be diaried and easily answered daily by clients/athletes you might work with or for yourself while following a training schedule, and especially in preparation for a specific event, to prevent overtraining issues. The fifth star is missing because of the presentation of information in such an advanced and scientific way. The format is not for everyone, but the information in it is extremely helpful in many venues. I am sure the authors hope that it is selected by many fitness and athletic professionals to educate and train everyone from a proathlete to the four day a week fitness enthusiast to keep them safe and keep training effective through proper recovery and recovery practices.

A fun and interesting book to read for those with some familiarity of Highland Games. It gives a unique view of a portion of Scottish history that is being kept alive and growing in the U.S. as well as Scotland today. Great information on all forms of athletic events and their history. Many that aren't played in the U.S. but interesting to read about all the same. While the list of games in the U.S. is out of date it's no problem because contacting most of the games listed will update you to many more being played all over the world today.

A girl's passion for competition
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.

Amazon quotes Publishers Weekly as saying that this short book is "mawkish and portentous." I could not disagree more. A year ago, I was lucky to pick up the British edition in a bookstore in Pattaya, Thailand. A few days ago I read it for the second time and was captivated; I love it.

Janovy is an excellent writer. Anyone who has experienced parenting, cares about sports, or wonders just what organized amateur competition can teach, would enjoy reading about Janovy's physically precocious daughter Jena and her struggles to play baseball with the boys and basketball with girls three years older than her.

Janovy is the father every child athlete dreams of; he and his wife, Karen, would go to any possible lengths to help their daughter participate in sports, share in her successes, and console her in her frustrations. He is a philosopher, a deep thinker, who clearly and articulately presents his thoughts, questions, and conclusions from the point of view of a father, biologist, and college teacher. He's the kind of guy who enjoys a wild and rowdy boondocks volleyball game with few rules, but understands the technical aspects of competition with coaches and referees and parents and time clocks and buzzers and whistles and screaming spectators and, of course, injuries.

Many have written about coaching and teaching, and Janovy is among the best I've ever read. He gave me new ways to appreciate how those with the gift and desire to coach can inspire and lead young people to individual excellence as well as successful teamwork.

When you read Fields of Friendly Strife, you may agree that "mawkish and portentous" tells us a lot more about the mindset of the Publishers Weekly reviewer than the contents of this lovely book that was dismissed so harshly.

This book, like they say, is "Chock full of information"! A really nice pamphlet type book of Every Record that you might want to know about Men's NCAA tournament Championships up to 1992. The part I enjoyed is at the end of the book that shows the full breakdown of ALL the colleges fighting during "March Madness". If anything....is there an update to this book?!? Still a nice book to get.

Franco Columbu's

What I liked about this book is the simplicity. Franco is also Doctor of Chiropractic, so he knows a thing or two about bodybuilding. The fact that he achieved so much without having
any physical advantage proves it.
There are various tried and good programs/split routines for the non-competitive and competitive bodybuilders. Good tips on diet and on common sense healthy living, very actual even though the book was published in '82. Over all the book is pretty complete and is a good example on how they trained in the past.
The only funny thing is that in some routines, unlike Arnold in his Encyclopedia of modern bodybuilding, Franco omits a few power movements which are essential to give the bodybuilder that muscle density. He more than Arnold was famous for his extremely heavy deadlifts.
