This is a very interesting book. It traces Alexyev's story from childhood through about 1977. It also briefly touches upon the careers of John Davis, Doug Hepburn, Norbert Schemansky, Paul Anderson, Alexis Medvedyev, Yuri Vlasov, and Leonid Zhabotinsky. It covers 1970-1977 fairly thoroughly, and even has a list of the world superheavyweight records from 1954-1977 for the press, snatch, clean and jerk, and total. It has approx. 45 black and white pictures in the back. The reasons I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 are these:1. It says nothing of the year 1978, when the world championships were Alexeyev's to take but he injured himself on the winning clean and jerk. 2. It says nothing of his year of rehab(1979). 3. It says nothing of his bombout, and end of his competitive career in the 1980 Moscow Olympics. 4. It was written in Russian, and however translated it into English left it in a very stilted style. A good proofreader with a sensitivity for modern English would have been nice. 5. All of the pictures are in black and white and separated into one back section, instead of interspersed throughout the book, like we would do here in America.
All of this said this still is the best book I have ever found on Alexeyev! It is readable and tells alot of his meets attempt by attempt.

THIS BOOK WAS ALL I HOPED IT WOULD BE , IT PORTAYS THE RISE TO WORLD CHAMPION OF ONE OF THE GREATEST LIFTERS IN HISTORY. THE BOOK STARTS BY GIVING SOME DETAILS OF ALEXEYEVS CHILDHOOD AND UPBRINGING THEN GOES STRAIGHT INTO HIS EARLY CONTESTS, THE AUTHOR A NOTED LIFTER HIMSELF REALLY SEEMS TO CAPTURE THE AUORA THAT SURROUNDED THE GREAT MAN IN HIS HEYDAY ,AND YOU CAN UNDERSTAND WHY OTHER GREAT COMPETETORS ALLWAYS SEEMED TO LIFT BELOW THEIR BEST WHEN UP AGAINST ALEXEYEV. THE BOOK PLOTS HIS CONTESTS UP TO THE TIME OF PUBLICATION AND HAS A VERY GOOD PHOTO SECTION AT THE BACK, ALL IN ALL THE BOOK IS ONE I HIGHLY RECOMMEND ESPECIALLY IF YOU ARE A WEIGHTLIFTER OR SPORTSMAN , EVEN THE FORWARD BY ARNOLD SCHWARZENEGGER IS INTERESTING READING, A THOROUGHLY ENJOYABLE FACTUAL INSIGHT INTO A GREAT ATHLETES LIFE.

This book shows the hunger of a challenger & fall of a champ

This book really guides any basketball lover through the rigors of a season of ACC basketball. From the ups and downs of the rebuilding N.C. State program, to the fall of the two-time National Champions (Duke), to the rise of the new champions, the North Carolina Tar Heels. Simply a book that any ACC, or basketball lover, has to read. It will indulge you and take you through a real life journey of the young men at these institutions. This book will show you that while basketball is an important part of these young men's lives, it is yet only a game. From the suicide of one young player to the departure of the all-time assist leader in NCAA history to the rise of the national champions, this is a must read!!!

Very good book, even if author went to Dook!

An interesting concept, to chronicle three powerhouses(historically, considering NCSU's recent struggles) in the same season. My only complaint is that the book spends far too much of it's attention on an also-ran Duke team to the detriment of NCAA champ UNC and NCSU. That is to be expected, however, when the author is a Dookie

A valuable book about Peruvian Curanderismo
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-11-01
While lacking the depth of "Wizard of the Four Winds" by Douglas Sharon (OP, but will be back in print soon), this book still provides a lot of information about Eduardo Calderon and Peruvian Northern Coast curanderismo. This book is built around a transcript of the movie "Eduardo the Healer," 1978, directed by Richard Cowan. As far as I know it is the only place where you can find transcriptions of Eduardo's invocations, and for this alone this book makes a valuable contribution. In addition, there is an outline of the curandero ceremony, and detailed description of Eduardo's mesa, item by item. Text is in English and Spanish, so the 140 pages boils down to only 70 pages of text. But with so little available on this subject, this volume should not be ignored for it's contribution.

I was expecting a little more from this one. Not much to read other than what the title states: The words of a peruvian healer.

poor man's friday night lights

For anyone who has participated in youth football to any degree, this book will bring back a lot of memories (good and bad). I am a Floridian living in Texas. I cannot begin to count the number of arguments I have had with Texans concerning Texas vs. Florida football. I was really hoping this book would show up Friday Night Lights and prove that FLA reigns supreme. Sadly for me, it did not do the trick. This is a quick read and will entertain, but it lacks some of the emotional depth of F.N.L. This may be more of a regional favorite describing South Florida very well, but I'm not sure New Englanders or those in the Midwest would find much of the cultural and geographical references all that interesting. I did like it, but just not enough to recommend buying it.

An Outstanding Book

This well-written book gives the reader a fascinating glimpse at a place where youth football is treated entirely differently than how you and I are used to. The author does a great job of providing the required political background and the social dynamics of Miami. I could not put the book down. This book is highly recommended.

A very well produced informative scource of information concerning the
excellent programs and rescources at this world renowned military academy.
A great deal of information gathering went into the production of this
video, which is best described as a great presentation of the great educstional and athletic programs available to all those who, if fortunate enough to be chosen to attend, can expect to find. As one who has spent a good deal of time there, the video brings back a flood of fond memories for me. I would recommend it to anyone considering trying
for an appointment to the academy.

This is a terrific guide for your child to get a hold of what plans they need to have in place if they are truely serious about those claims that they want to be an athelete for a career. It will help you as a parent to figure out how serious they are, and if they are how to move forward towards planning and acting on helping them achieve their goal. It will help them look at goals and move forward with a purpose. I highly recommend this book.

The Athletic Eye written by Arthur Seiderman is a book that I enjoyed greatly, and would recommend it to anyone that wants to learn about the various important roles that the human eye plays in the world of sports today. Seiderman gives a great insight of visual exercises one can perform in order to increase visual skills for a particular sport. For example, he talks about how peripheral vision helps out a basketball player tremendously. Then, he goes on to get a picture demonstrated how to exercise your eyes in your own home in order to increase your peripheral vision! Overall, this book is a great book one should look into. Especially if you have a love for eyes and sports like myself.

In my many years of playing soccer (6 years) I have learned plenty of dribling, defence and offence skills but this book considerably helped my techniques improve vastly. I wrote this review beacuse i wanted to acknowledge the great author. I put the skills that he mentioned in his book to work and voila I was averging 24 goals a season (I worked really hard too) The book teaches you about pschycologic factors involved with the game and with great illustrations it depicts the techniques used by proffesional soccer players! Have fun! Enjoy it! Buy it!

A great read even for non-sports lovers
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2004-11-24
I am not a sports person. Except as sports figures have impacted the subjects I am interested in-I know Denny McLain was a good lounge organist who recorded fine albums; Joe DiMaggio was the second husband of Marilyn Monroe, was destroyed by her death (as was his son, then in the Marines), and possessed a bigger part of male anatomy than Secretariat; Thurman Munson was killed in one of the first SP Citations (earlier, identical ones legally required a two man crew, ridiculous because copilots were far more needed in light twins with GTSIO Continentals requiring a flight engineer to manage them than a "corporate jet" slower than a T-33 and which modified P-51 Mustangs could outrun at most altitudes)-sports don't interest me.

But Callahan's book did. He covers Larry Bird,Bobby Riggs and Billie Jean King, Wilt Chamberlain, Boris Becker, many other names (Palmer and Nicklaus,Pete Rose, and Graf and Seles) even someone like myself-who really does live under a rock sometimes-cannot not have heard. He makes them interesting as people, as with the older generations of sportswriters like Si Burick and Jimmy Cannon (a name well known to all Sinatraphiles, as with Jilly and Toots) who have now passed on. And his brief discussion of "the other Marilyn"-Marilyn Maxwell, a fine actress in her own right who really was named "Marvel Marilyn Maxwell" at birth, unlike Mary Ellen Miller and Norma Jeane Mortensen Dougherty DiMaggio, and who died sadly of a heart attack in her forties-was fascinating and left me curious enough to look up the above trivia.

In summation, he fascinates people with sports who don't even like sports. Like Howard Stern, who can make you laugh in a traffic jam, that's a singular thing. Bravo!
