I utilized this text for my microbiology class in undergrad. It lists the major parasites, molds and bacteria. Parasites were the most interesting because it shows you what foods are associated with what parasite. Pretty gross stuff but was not boring at all. I also used:
Microbiology Study Guide: Key Review Question and Answers, isbn 0971999635, to help me with test preparation. The questions were quite similar to what I found on my college microbiology tests. Both books helped me to achieve very good scores on my tests.

I have just begun to collect peachblow glass and I know very little about it. I bought the most beautiful vase, not knowing what it was other than glass, and decided to learn a bit about the piece in particular.....and then I discovered the wonderful world of peachblow! I picked up info here and there, but began to notice that it was confusing - the types, the companies that made them, the coloration, the imitations and most of all, what the heck defines what is and what isn't "peachblow," "peach blow," "peach bloom..." and so on. I started looking for a book that was informative, yet written so a beginner could comprehend. Voila! I found out about this book and it was a super investment. The pictures are stunning and the captions are helpful. The book is divided into chapters by company/type (i.e. Mt. Washington, Wheeling etc.) and each chapter gives loads of info, pictures, history and the Identification Cards, which plainly set out the characteristics of that particular type. If you collect peachblow or any glass or antiques, or if you just love beautiful art - this book is for you. Since the coloration and pictures are so excellent, it even makes a perfect "coffee table" book! I couldn't be more pleased.

A very practical tool for increasing revenue!!

Review Date: 2005-04-03
Let me be honest to start with - I'm one of the authors. So, you may not want to consider this review without prejudice, but on the other hand - I know a lot about the book.

We wrote this book because it was the kind of book that we wish we had had when we started our careers. We have received great feedback from individuals who have read it. We have many testimonials to the increased physician collections that readers have realized when they have implemented our best practice ideas. I hope you enjoy this book.

pothole-free road map to a profitable billing office
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2008-01-27
"The Physician Billing Process" packs in some sixty years of practice management experience, along with multiple advanced degrees in business administration, coding, and billing. It starts with an outline of the revenue collection cycle, reviews eight potholes on the road to getting paid, and continues to addressing all key billing office management aspects, including staffing benchmarks, using technology, outsourcing, performance benchmarking, and compliance.

Each pothole includes a description of the billing function, advanced practices, a practice blunder case study, exercises, figures, tools, and policies. Pragmatic focus on solving day-to-day problems is the hallmark of this book, which is a treasure of simple to use everyday management rules, e.g., if you have 100,000 claims annually in your practice, you should have approximately 10 full time equivalent (FTE) staff involved in back-end billing functions. National benchmarks include reference data like 4.15 FTE for insurance follow up, 1.61 - for patient follow up, 0.53 - for credit resolution, 1.61 - for payment posting, 0.93 - for claims processing, and 1.26 - for overhead, adding up to 10.05 FTE's per 100,000 annual claims (Chapter 10).

If you are just starting a billing company or if you have managed a billing office for years, this book is a pothole-free road map to a profitable billing business. Study it and return to it often for reference.

Red Sea Peril - an eye opener!

Having spent my life at sea on Tugs, Ships, Barges & every type of pleasure craft I can get hold of, I have been traveling the world in sweet innocence! To read about such an obviously honest & gentle couple, who would do anything to help anyone they met, who might like help, taken prisoner in this way, seems incredible. I am so glad they were able to gain their freedom & let us read about their ordeal & their friends, relatives & captors. A gripping read, that shows a couple that are so definitely made for one another. Therefore a read with everything:- Travel, Drama, Adventure, Gentleness, Love, Compassion......... What else can a good book have! I LOOK FORWARD TO THE NEXT ONE!

A tale for sailors

I have really enjoyed reading Red Sea Peril. I found I could imagine Shirley and Peter, so different, and so complementary at the same time.
I liked the style, the sentences are short, precise, with just enough humor. In fact it was very pleasant to read.
The chapters are just long enough and the flashbacks permitted the reader to set the situation of a sailor's life and the choices you have to make. BUT I would like to have followed with small charts at the beginning of each chapter (what my own editor has asked me to do) with points where you were and where you go. Sailors like to see this.
However, I appreciated very much all the photographs, very well situated. I like very much too the "introspectives" and would have liked even more of them. I enjoyed too the poetry, it rings so "true" and I felt that very much. Even in drama I was aware of Shirley's "joie to vivre".
Finally you hae given me a taste and I wish to read more of your adventures because this book merits it. Ihope to read the next book soon.

Milestones
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2007-10-15
In this collection of Russian verse stars are memorable points in life, each shining its pin light and illuminating the life's journey. This road takes the author and the reader, hand in hand, from the post Holocaust Moscow and Vilnius to present day Israel and the USA. It is infused with the meditative irony, humor, and the sheer Jewish ability to overcome whatever may come. Many of the poems are addressed to family and friends - but this is never detrimental to the reader's ability to empathize with the author.

These stars are not to be hauled in a sack, but to be taken out and examined one at a time.

Excellent Coding Text for The Beginner

I LOVE this book! I am an instructor and president of an online medical billing training website. I taught a CPT coding class last year, and the book the school required was horrible- I wished I had been able to use this worktext for the course!! Now that I have opened my own online training site, I am able to use this text for our 'CPT and ICD-9 Coding for the Medical Biller' course! It is an excellent text for an introductory course! Instructors, if you find your students are struggling with the current text you use---get a copy of this--you'll be so glad you did!

Strong argument for human-centered air traffic automation
Helpful Votes: 6 out of 6 total.
Review Date: 1999-12-18
Billings covers the evolution of aviation automation, especially in the airborne side of the 'equation', its successes and failures, and the requirements for the future.

Incorporating the principles of human-centered automation early in the development of Air Traffic Management automation, ATC modernization would be well-advanced by also taking advantage of the lessons learned in on-board systems.

In order to maintain the situational awareness of the human operators, the design of ATM automation should be based on the 'management by consent' doctrine. ATM automation should be a 'close mimic' of on-board FMS - so that both the pilot and controller communities have a shared cognitive model of how the systems operate. And the ATM-to-FMS coupling should be procedural, rather than automated, to guarantee the ability of the human operator to safely and efficiently operate the system.

Keeping these three objectives in mind will lead to the implementation of a system that can handle the increasing traffic while not sacrificing the high level of safety we currently enjoy.

I have only one minor issue with this work: Billings mentions AAS - the Advanced Automation System project, begun in 1981 - quite often. This book was published in 1997; by that time, FAA had terminated this project.

Trying to Debunk the last "PC" Prejudice
Helpful Votes: 31 out of 33 total.
Review Date: 2003-10-24
Having lived in the Northeast and Upper Midwest for most of my adult life, it was with some trepidation that I accepted a position as a doc at a Southern Appalachian hospital. To deal with my cognitive dissonance, I purchased this book and was reassured. Now, after months of working and living in Appalachia, I can only agree: My anecdotal experiences support Backtalk from Appalachia. The region is populated, for the most part, with people with a refreshingly strong sense of home and place, and an appreciation for nature--imagine that! There are professional, blue collar, unemployed, and everything-in-between folks down here. The bell curve of IQs around here is normally distributed: The oft-repeated Deliverance nonsense has no place outside of the book and the film. So, if, like me, you have tired of the big cities with their congestion, pollution, and crime, come on out here for a visit. You might decide to stay.
