Tul-tok-a-na,Tu-tok-a-nu-la or Tutokanula was a real Yosemite Indian and Paiute.

This story is more then a legend. Tul-tok-a-na Tu-tok-a-nu-la or Tutokanula was a real person. He was an early chief of the Yosemite Indian people. He was a Yosemite-Mono Lake Paiute whose descendents are living today. Lancisco Wilson and others were his descendents. He signed the 1890 petition with other Paiutes and Indians to Congress for redress the taking of Yosemite by the government without payment. So people are reading a story about a real Paiute person. The story might have been embellished but he was still a leader of the Ahwahneechee or Ahwahnee people. One of the chiefs of the Yosemite Indians and a Yosemite-Mono Lake Paiute.

Orphaned on the trail and deceived by an outlaw sheriff, Sarah Anders is on the verge of a career as a `soiled dove' at Lola's boomtown brothel. She desperately grabs at her only chance for honest work -- at the Mineral Creek Ranch, owned by handsome Cal Easton. While working as a nurse to Cal's mother, a stroke victim, she learns that Cal is a man haunted by the past and cursed by a deadly enemy bent on destroying his family and his successful ranch operation. And Sarah also hides a secret past, which Cal must uncover and reconcile before they are free to love.

An overlooked side of taming the Old West

Review Date: 2003-03-10
A highly recommended addition to Women's Studies, American History, and Catholic Church History reference collections and supplemental reading lists, Uncommon Women Unmarked Trails: The Courageous Journey Of Catholic Missionary Sisters In Frontier Montana is the amazing but true story of Catholic nuns who helped settle the American west in general, and the frontier territory of Montana in particular. From the Sisters of Providence, who built convents, hospitals, and schools to serve Native Americans; to the St. Ignatius Mission which was founded by four French-speaking nuns in 1864; to the Ursuline nuns who arrived in 1884, Uncommon Women Unmarked Trails is an enjoyable and fascinating coverage of an overlooked side of taming the Old West.

If you have ever spent a day on a river, you should have this book. It is a reminder of the amazing places that we have here in Montana to enjoy the great outdoors. The quality of the photographs is amazing - each one is better than the next - these make great gifts as the book is reasonably sized and can fit on a nightstand. Get this book, you will not be disappointed.

Absolutely Wonderful Reading

Loved this book. The supposed final book in the Montana Malone series. (please write another one, Anne Eames) I am in love with the town of Joeville, and want to hear more about the characters who live there. No one makes you long for characters to get together, like Anne Eames. The heroine and the hero are a treasure, but I especially loved the secondary story line in this one as well. Anne is the best at making me cry for happiness. I have most of her books, and will continue to snap them up the minute they hit the store.

Professor Kinkade's work a monument to devotion and respect

Review Date: 2000-03-23
The dictionary covers all the major dialects of Upper Chehalis, including Satsop, and is the definitive and exhaustive source of linguistic information on this now moribund language. The fruit of over 40 years of devoted research to a native american language and its speakers, this book continues to play a role in the ongoing cultural and spiritual revival of the Chehalis people and their associated clans. Though technical in nature and using a phonolgy just a bit daunting for the average reader, this dictionary will feed the hunger of young indigenous students who long for what was lost in the cultural transmission of their heritage. Of particular interest to the average reader is the importance of plants and animals from the rainy Chehalis valley. The vocabulary of the dictionary mirrors the daily conversation of all the folks of south west Washington, both native and non-native. The bibliography of Chehalis texts is complete, and Professor Kinkade should be congratulated for his use of all of Franz Boas' original notes, among other sources, which have been languishing in Philedelphia's American Philosophical Society Library for most of the 20th century. My favorite word from Upper Chehalis is the onomonopoedic "qwaqw" for the raven. As a child in the Satsop valley, I knew the presence of the spirits of those who had walked before. After years of searching, I now have the words for many of the sights, sounds, and thoughts of that moist, gray, green, wild world.

The Best "Boy And His Dog" Story Of All Time
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2005-09-17
How can I be the first person reviewing this item? When I was nine, I loved this old book. I read it all the time at my grandparents' house, where an aged copy resided. This should be a classic and instead looks like it's forgotten. Major-mega injustice. Valiant from the book's title is a wise, brave shepherd dog who lives and works on a Wyoming ranch with his boy and the boy's dad, who are ranchers in the late 1800's, during the time of a deadly range war between sheep and cattle ranchers. This novel is a cross between lovely pulp fiction luridness and dignified children's literature of the sort not known today, and it brings kidnapping, the wild west in all its excitement, and the love between a boy and his faithful dog, into its plotline. This is a seventy-year-old novel and I wish it would be re-printed by someone because I know children and adults today would like it every bit as much as I did almost twenty years ago and its original audience did generations back.

A Book for the Radio/Montana Lover

My Grandfather (I called him Papa ;D) wrote this book several years before he passed in 2005. I have since read it, and enjoyed the information within concerning early radio in Montana. Both radio and Montana were my Grandfather's biggest interests. I recall countless times hearing stories of him working at radio stations (something he continued to do even into his sixties) and the joy he got out of working at those stations. His knowledge of Montana was also quite extensive or should I say "Obsessive". Here, you see both his passions collide. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys radio/broadcast history or Montana history.
