Colorful, captivating, a novel of freedom, self-reliance and humor. Twelve Quiet Men is a great read based on the little known Vigilante activities of eastern Montana and western North Dakota. The author has obviously done his research, compiling facts that have been delibertly hidden and forgotton. He uncovers the true mood of the Montana territory by showing the character of the men who took the trail to clean up the rustlers and killers of that time period. Leaving the reader searching for more information concerning the events of those historic times.

In the 1870's and 1880's, from central Montana into western Dakota Territory, organized outlaw gangs terrorized the region, rustling, robbing and killing. The law was powerless to stop them and the U.S. Army refused to help. Finally, a small secret group of determined cattlemen, led by Granville Stuart, abandoned their ranching responsibilities to hunt down and exterminate these lawless predators.

Wow, what a story! This is a forgotten chapter of the American West. Many are aware of the Vigilante activities in the Virginia City area during the 1860's when twenty two members of the outlaw Plummer gang were killed. Twenty years later, nearly one hundred outlaws were hung or shot in less than two years, but little has been written about it. Why?

Twelve men formed the active Vigilante group and they knew how to keep a secret. While they had the silent, active support of many ranchers in the region, they revealed their plans to no one. I, like others living in Montana and Dakota, have heard rumors of these events for years but never knew the complete story.

The author has done a commendable job in his research, reviewing period newspapers, delving into obscure records and capturing bits and peices of the events from various sources. If you like western historical novels or action/adventure tales, this is the book for you. It contains so much detail about life in those times, it speaks with authority and rings true.

I highly recommend this book. It's a great read!

I've read so many "western" novels and such that I could almost feel the imaginary spurs on my heels when I walked down the carpeted hall on the way to my PC at the office, but I've finally found the real deal. This book removed those pesky spurs and replaced them with a real understanding of what life, and survival, was truly like in the effort to settle the west. Beyond that, and perhaps more importantly, it's an excellent story. I am not too much of a stickler for accurate details, but I must have an entertaining read. Here I found a great read, so I did a little bit of research. The author actually pulled it off; he combined a great story with historical accuracy! Ladies and gentlemen, that's a rarity.
As I've said I'm a western novel nut, and in this one I've found attention to detail that surpasses all others.
This guy obviously did his homework, and then was able to turn history into a page-turner that I simply couldn't put down. Get it, enjoy it, and let's hope that he gives us more!

Whether you're a day hiker or a backpacker, you'll love this compact guide to wildflowers. It fits easily in your fanny pack and you'll never notice the weight in your backpack. The pictures are fabulous and provide an excellent means of identification. I used to find myself out hiking and wondering about the names of the beautiful flowers I spotted. I would even debate picking just one to take home and identify. Well no more, with this little guide, I can identify them all and leave them in place for the next hiker to enjoy.

I love my guide!

Superb! I just love my little lightweight wildflower guide and every one I show it to is blown away by its compact size. It has just about every flower in it that I see when I'm hiking in the area. Other guides are just too heavy so I never bring them along. So many nice photos here, sometimes several views of the same plant to really help you identify. I like the family organization format because the ones that look alike are right next to each other for quick comparison. The color guides never worked for me because some flowers are multicolored and I never knew where to look. Oh yeah! This book has caption right under the flower photo where they belong, so I don't have to flip pages. What a jewel!

Finally, a flower guide that actually makes you want to use it! Super light and full of photos, cover to cover. Waterproof, that will be good for the drizzle days. I've always wondered why I had to carry around photos of Washington and Oregon wildflowers when I was hiking in Montana, now I don't have to! This is the one to have for this area. No wasted space or weight. First rate.

It's a large amount of good color photos in a small size. I'm surprised at the depth of information in a pocket guide. It's going to have a permanent place in my daypack so I can brush up on my knowledge along the trail. I wish all trail guides were this light and portable. Awesome and a real treasure. A must have for any hiking enthusiast.

It's obvious that the author has perused plenty of climbing books and learned from the successes and failures of others. This is a gorgeous book, with concise route descriptions that are informative without wrecking the adventure of the climbs themselves. The photos are clear and useful and the book is well-organized. I have climbed a few of the longer routes in Cody as well as several in Montana and have yet to find any inaccuracies. 99% of the book is about routes - the obligatory stuff about local ethics and history is interesting but brief, unlike some guidebooks that fill half their pages with Leave No Trace advice.

Highly recommended for all ice climbers interested in seeing the Yellowstone ecosystem from high on an ice climb!

A great book for experienced nurses or folks like me, who are just starting in the profession. Annette Vallano's book answered questions about nursing I wouldn't have even known to ask. I'm changing careers after twenty-five years as a teacher, and this workbook/resource book contained the best career advice I could have received. It gives a realistic, honest, nuts and bolts picture of what nursing is like today, both the good and the bad. I have a head start in how to be assertive and pro-active in finding and creating the nursing position that will suit my skills, interests and life-style. I also understand some of the work related pitfalls can happen and how to avoid them. Finally, the book has a heart and soul that gives meaning and importance to the unique abilities we each have to offer in our work as a nurse.

Montana offers a wealth of outdoor fun for the active traveler, from skiing and snowmobiling to fly fishing and horseback riding. With stunning scenery and colorful history, the state is one of the most appealing in the US. And the best part: it's rarely crowded!

Join Rowles as she explores big cities and small towns alike, as well as the small wilderness areas and sprawling preserves. Guest ranches are the preferred accommodation here, but the author gives you plenty of other options. And if you're not ready for a ride in the saddle, perhaps some classes are in order - you'll find all the details you need in this hefty, information-packed guidebook.

Oneness Commentary on a Classsic

Gospel of One, Letters of Aul

This book is easy to read and is deceptively simple. It is a commentary on Sun Tzu's classic work "The Art of War," which in itself is a simple book with profound implications. It has been used by thousands of people to gain an advantage or a victory over enemies and opponents in the context of wars, business deals, sports, and personal relationships. The problem with it is that the advice only tells you how to gain a finite victory.

The "Art of Non-War," on the other hand, tells us how to rise above dualistic thinking that leads us to believe we can gain any kind of lasting benefit by defeating other people, who are actually part of the Infinite, just as we are. The practitioners of non-war do not see people, or institutions, or belief systems as the enemy. Their aim is to help people see that we are all part of the Infinite Oneness.

The book comments on all the strategies and angles that Sun Tzu brings up, but each strategem is brilliantly countered by the perspective of living in oneness with the Infinite, which has no enemies.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to strengthen their resolve to live with an attitude of true peace and love for everyone. The pitfalls of dualistic thinking are easy to fall into because most of the world still thinks in terms of gaining advantage or victory over perceived enemies--in war, business, sports and personal relationships. How many of us want to be "one up" on someone else? --
Cliff Mikkelson "The Oneness Guy"

From start to finish this book was a pleasure to read.

If you have had enough of war on this planet, and you're wondering what you can do, or if it is even possible to eliminate war, then this book is a must read. Einstein once famously said "The significant problems we face cannot be solved at the same level of thinking we were at when we created them." And therein lies the key.

War truly cannot be overcome while we still look at the world through the same pair of goggles through which we've been looking at it until now. We can try to create artificial bridges, artificial truces, artificial peace. But that peace will never last as long as we still hold on to a world view where there are divisions between people, between races, between religions, between nations and ultimately even divisions in ourselves.

So the key to achieving a lasting peace on this beautiful planet of ours is not just by trying to create political talks and truces and agreements, but in dealing with the issue from a higher level, by changing the way we look at the world, at other people and ourselves.

And in that respect this book is a fantastic guide that will open your eyes to different ways of looking at the world, so that you can start to clean out the goggles that have been muddied with dirt, until you are finally ready to take the goggles off altogether and see things clearly.

Lasting peace truly is achievable, and it is achievable in only one way and that is to remove the beam from our eyes, which is the consciousness of war and division.

War has finally met its match

War has finally met its match. Yet, when you read this book you
understand that even this is an illusion as ultimately nothing
can be opposed the to the matchless forces of peace.

This should be the handbook for all who are committed to
overcoming war on this planet. Yet, the teachings in this book
are beyond the anti-war movement - as inherent in that idea is a
struggle against war by those who are opposed to it.

This is the definitive proactive guide to producing peace in
yourself and peace on the planet. Not by fighting against war
but by uniting with the forces of peace within and without. It
provides incomparable insight to how we can actually love our
neighbors as our self and turn the other cheek in all
situations.

Never has such profound wisdom been presented with such clarity
and simplicity. This book is written for all walks of life.

The only prerequisites for this book are a very simple: an open mind
and an willingness to look outside of the boxes that have kept
mankind in the grips of war for thousands of years.

If you are tired of war on this planet and are yearning for
peace then this is your book. For the more we internalize its
message, the closer we will be to actually realizing what many
would call the impossilbe dream: peace on earth and good will to
all.

This book appears to be identical to the one that Prevention is bringing out on September 19, 2006. This 2004 edition is by Sari Harrar and Editors of Prevention, and the 2006 edition is by Ann Fannante (sp?) and the Editors of Prevention. The 2006 edition does not say 'revised' or 'updated' or anything like that. Furthermore, in the current edition of Prevention magazine, they have an article that mentions their "new" book with details from its program, but the article is by Sari Harrar!
Huh???
Sometimes I have "issues" with Prevention - but in general think they are a positive force in health-themed publications.
The earlier book by Sari Harrar, et al., is a good resource for a good health regimen.

I found this book to be a lifesaver. I was so addicted to sugar, and had become hypoglycemic, to the point where I was having seizures, if I didn't eat candy or sugar, the moment I started shaking and sweating profusely. I was hungry all the time, gaining weight daily it seemed like, tired all the time, and unable to concentrate. After reading this book, and following the steps for getting off the sugar and replacing it with healthy foods, that didn't let my sugar go up and down. I had no more seizures, lost weight like crazy, I have tons of energy now, and I no longer Crave Sugar 24 hrs a day, nor am I hungry all day long. I feel like I have a life again. Not to mention my risk aren't as high for being coming diabetic, which is what my Doctor told me I surely would have before. Not that I don't have a chance of still becoming one, but before it was a SURE THING.
I definetly recommend this book to anyone who struggles with sugar addiction, like I did. You will feel REBORN!

McCord is equal in every way to Louis L'Lamour in his writing abilities. I just wonder why anyone has not made a movie of the Baynes Clan yet. It is the best family western series since the Sacketts and I do not exagerate at all. After reading the Baynes Clan and Walking Hawk, another excellent book by McCord, I am a devoted fan of his writing style. I am eagerly awaiting his next western book!!! ~Bev. Bozman~

The lively, frequently humorous recollections allow one to become immersed in the anticipation, exhilaration, and despair derived through our pursuit instinct. Though I am not a hunter, I enjoyed this book a great deal. As in SKETCHES FROM THE RANCH, Aadland brings to life a place and its people, and you want to be there, with them. The author describes the rifles he owned with the same affection and sensitivity he brings to his descriptions of nature. You feel his boyhood excitement, identify with the adventures--and misadventures--of family life, and appreciate his extensive knowledge and love of his natural surroundings. Aadland's life as a hunter, from his boyhood initiation to new discoveries with his grown boys, exemplifies what he calls the "hunters paradox" -- the meeting of the willingness to kill with a deep reverence for life. Whether you are more entertained by the hunt or by the Montana love story, this book will satisfy.
