A Close Look at Snow and Snowflakes
Helpful Votes: 7 out of 7 total.
Review Date: 2003-07-30
While working on avalanche research in the 1950's, Edward Chapelle discovered that the variation in snow crystal forms influences the occurrence of avalanches. This discovery led him to write this "Field Guide to Snow Crystals" to explain the basics of snow crystal identification and metamorphism to interested laypersons. In this case, "snow crystal" includes what is commonly called a "snowflake". So if you are interested in understanding snowflakes, this book is for you. The field guide has three parts. The first section addresses the identification of snow crystals. There are charts which allow the reader to identify any snow crystal (or snowflake) that he finds. And there is an explanation of how and why snow crystals form. The second part of the book explains how to photograph a snow crystal, which might be of interest to photographers specializing in close-up work as well as snowflake enthusiasts. The third and final section of the book contains 50 photographs of snow crystals, which illustrate discussions of what happens to snow as it falls and as it sits on the ground under various conditions. The metamorphism which causes snow crystals to alter their form as they lie on or under the surface of snow is both pictured and described in detail. The differences between snow, hoar, and rime are also pictured and described so that the reader can easily differentiate between them. I have only a casual interest in snowflakes, and I enjoyed this book. It made me think about the variety of forms I have seen snow take, and now I understand what I was looking at. My only criticism of this "Field Guide to Snow Crystals" is that it lacks a glossary of terms. New terms are explained as they arise, but a glossary in the back of the book would have been a helpful quick reference. I would recommend the "Field Guide to Snow Crystals" to skiers, mountain climbers, snow rangers, and anyone who has an interest in better understanding snow or snowflakes. The book is 6x8 inches in size and 101 pages long.

Finnish Folklore
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2002-12-20
If you're interested in Finnish Folklore, this book is a good place to start. It gives more of a general overview of many topics in folklore. If you're interesyed in more specific details about the areas discussed (such as different ethnic groups in Finland, historical agrarian society, legends, folktales, riddles and jokes to name a few) then you might be some what disappointed. There are quite a few examples of different genres of folklore and they were actually collected in Finland. The examples are given both in Finnish and in English.
The organization of the book is confusing at times, and some topics are discussed are listed in the reference section even though there is very little information on that page.

Thank you Mr. Anglin for a comprehensive review of an area often visited and seldom appreciated. Central Washington is shrub-steppe and lacks the beauty and lustre of the more spectacular pine forests of the Cascades or the Puget Sound with its rugged pioneers. However, major waterways. springs and bunch grass concentrations helped direct traffic in and around the arid wilderness of the Columbia Basin. Anglin has been thorough in his research and methodical in his presentation of the various phases of transit. His level of detail has made me reach for the gazeteer or road map many times to envision a herd of 2000 cattle fording some stream or fighting off some Yakama warrior party. My only complaint was the rather small number of maps compared to the wealth of narrative.

An informative examination of the two key founders

Few books have treated this topic, Madison and Washington's collaboration, and this is an excellent treatment. Unravelling the waxing and waning of this relationship serves well those interested in the Federalist Era. The scholarship is obvious, and the presentaion is good. Those interested in the unfoldings of the Republic must pay attention to the Father of the Country, and his relationship to the Father of the Constituion. Liebiger allows an enormous view of Washington's dignity as a statesman, and Madison's erudition in the realm of Constituion building, amongst other federalist era realtionships, this collaboration was as crucial as any, and a topic long overdue.

This book is positively gorgeous and pays tribute to the campus as you remember it and also guides you through the new campus of today. As the daughter of a former faculty member, a graduate, and the mother of an alumnus, this book is a cherished keepsake of the campus each of us attended. The book will inspire you to stay connected to the University of Washington as it grows to meet the needs of future students.

An interesting biography of the great anthropologist
Helpful Votes: 6 out of 6 total.
Review Date: 2005-03-03
Franz Boas was one of the founders of American anthropology. Born in Germany, he first studied geography. After an expedition to Baffin Island and encountering Eskimos, he became interested in the Indians of the Northwest Coast. He came to America, studied the Central Eskimos and NW Coast Indians, and was hired by the Museum of Natural History in NYC. His relationship with the Museum was stormy and didn't last all that long. A second volume was planned by Cole, but he died before he could get to it. The most interesting sections of the book are the ones dealing with Boas's field work in British Columbia along with other giants in anthropology such as Teit and George Hunt. Cole does not deal a whole lot with Boas's work specifically. A good biography, though incomplete.

Funny and Irreverent

For those readers unfamiliar with Karal Ann Marling, this book is as good an introduction as any. A professor of Art History and American Studies at the University of Minnesota, Marling, in "George Washington Slept Here" gives us a well-researched and amusing account of how Americans have used the image of the "Father of our Country" for a variety of social, economic, and political purposes.

Washington has always been one of the most enigmatic of Revolutionary heroes and Presidents, which has rendered his image amenable to packaging and repackaging according to the needs of the times. His reputation for honesty, probity, and dignity (among other virtues) has appealed to Americans across the generations. We, as a culture, have placed him in an imaginary colonial past--simpler, less complicated--a past that we can look to, and find comfort in, as a palliative for our own hurried and complicated lives.

Marling takes us through the development of Washington the "icon", beginning in the middle decades of the nineteenth century. She shows us how our fascintation with the hero of Valley Forge helped to spur a general, wide-spread interest in things colonial--the Colonial Revival movement--that continues to this day (her book ends in the 1980s); witness the vast quantities of colonial revival furnishings, house designs, and other "artifacts" produced over the decades.

Apart from Washington's "influence" on the colonial revival, his image has been used to sell everything from soup to nuts to politicians, a phenomenon that Marling examines in amusing detail. Her analysis of Warren G. Harding's use of Washington iconography is wonderful, as is her examination of the symbolic use of Washington and the "colonial" by the artist Grant Wood.

In sum, for anyone interested in American popular culture and the way that we make use of the past, "George Washington Slept Here" should find space on your bookshelf.

Helpful book that touches on a lot of subjects and gives "what to say" advice
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2008-05-11
For my husband and I, this book was reassuring that we're doing things right, which is truly not much of a comfort in this horrific time in our lives. Our oldest son sexually abused our youngest (9 years difference). This book didn't cover much at all on sibling sexual abuse but did cover very real issues like how important it is to BELIEVE your child and give them support, dealing with the responses from friends and family, handling your childs reactions and daily life, the legal system, grieving, self esteem, sexuality, dealing with the abuse as your child matures and trying to move on. As my title says, each section gives a guide/suggestion on things you could say to your child to help them in each situation. There were also some excercises that could be done with older children to help them process things out.

On a personal note, if you are having to look this subject up in Amazon, my heart goes out to you. We never would have expected to be in this "club" that no one wants to be in. There are so many emotions to deal with right now. I want to give this book 5 stars, however it didn't give me any specific info on sibling abuse or any new ideas and I truthfully am still at the stage that Im looking for "the answer" - the one thats going to make all this pain and suffering go away. I know I'll never find it, but, nevertheless.....

I think the book is a worthwhile read.
