If you've ever read Yellow Wolf and Hear Me, My Chiefs! then you must read this book. It's the not always glamorous behind the scenes of just how the books came to be. I had perhaps three very minor criticisms while reading the book but must say that Evans did a fantastic job. Long live Yellow Wolf, Peo Peo and the non-treaty Nez Perce. You have my eternal respect!

We purchased 4 prowler books to assist my daughter in making her final college decision. They were quite helpful in getting beyond the mainstream guide information. This book helped her decide on W & L . Every school has characteristics which make it right for one kid and wrong for another. Reading this book points out some of these important distinctives. In getting several guides we were able to compare / contrast different schools as they all follow the same outline of chapters. This resource helped my daughter to zero in on questions to ask students and professors when visiting. It also gave her a starting point in deciding about a dorm. This book is a good perspective to round out other sources such as Princeton, US News and ISI guides. The ISI "Choosing the Right College" guide is another good alternative perspective emphasizing the traditional liberal arts preparation each school may provide.

As a practising oncologist, I own a whole personal library of oncology books. I find this book easy to use and sufficiently authoritative as well as up-to-date for quick reference and reminders. Compared to the standard large textbooks, it restricts discussion to only the most relevant and frequently quoted studies, but this should make it ideal for the trainee doing his/her revisions not to be too bogged down by details. Among the "shorter" textbooks/manuals, this is definitely the best.
One notable problem however relates to the faulty 'binding' of book, and both my paperback copies (one kept in my office, and the other at home) fall apart within weeks of purchasing. Publishers take note !!

Excellent Collection Explaining Washington Politics

The politics of the State of Washington is one that has emerged from strong progressive and populist sentiments, according to some of the scholars whose works have been collected in this very useful volume of information explaining Washington politics and governance. This book is an excellent reference explaining how the various branches of Washington government operate and the background to how they become as they are.
Washington began as a state founded by optimistic settlers with utopian dreams, and to some degree that sentiment continues resonating. It has been an activist state which tends to have one of the largest percent of female legislators. Washington was one of the first states to enacted abortion rights and to create a state Equal Rights Amendment. Still, there also exists a strong conservative base, as was noted when Democratic House Speaker Tom Foley was defeated by a `Gingrich Revolution' candidate in 1994.
Comparisons between the Washington government, including its legislature, and governing in other states can be made through examining this book. As in other states, Washington voters appear to dislike their legislature but support their particular legislator, showing legislators have a closer connection to their voters even if the public doesn't always like the legislative results.
Washington is an initiative and referendum state which allows voters to place policy questions before voters to decide. This process thus often restricts legislators in how they may handle issues and debatably makes Washington more open to public interaction in policy making. On the other side, this places decisions more into the hands of interests in elections and less into the hands of a representative democracy. The legislature has found it is very constrained in developing a state budget as previous referendums require limiting expenditures and revenues as well as calling for mandated spending. This leaves limited flexibility in shaping a budget, which has become more of a concern in recent years as the state has been experience decreasing economic growth.
Some authors consider Washington as having a "moralistic political culture" with citizens placing high expectations of strong performances from their public officials. The political parties are considered by authors in this book to be relatively weak. Voters have weak political party affiliation. There has been a growing increase in the number of ballot questions over the last couple decades, indicating the voters are more apt in Washington to take major issues into their own hands rather than allowing political leaders to become as involved as they may be in other states.

The sequel to Washington State University Press regional history series that began with "Washington Territory", "Washington State: The Inaugural Decade, 1889-1899" by respected historian Robert E. Ficken covers the first decade after the state of Washington had formally entered the Union. This was a decade that saw the development of a new railroad system, a population explosion, systematic development of the vast natural resources, the expansion of agriculture made possible by irrigation, and significant financial investment by outside capitalists. It was also a decade marred by political corruption and incompetence, labor disputes, the rise of criminal activity, municipal budget crises, and a bitter controversy over the tidelands. This was also the decade in which Washington State was severely effected by the 1893 economic collapse resulting in the second worse depression in the history of America that took four years to reverse beginning with the railroads and the Klondike gold rush. A model of regional history, "Washington State: The Inaugural Decade, 1889-1899" is an informed and informative work of super scholarship and painstaking research which is of significant value for academia and recommended to the non-specialist general reader with an interest in Washington state history.

Riveting - a breakthrough in historical literature

With a truly unique perspective on historical events, Rochvarg relates with precision and style a fascinating look into the (until now) hidden side of one of the major historical events of the 20th century.
Reading this book without a deep knowledge of the events surrounding the Watergate trials in no way dampened the overall effect of the book.
Not able to put it down, I finished it in one sitting.
When I was done I felt I had learned a tremendous amount about the Watergate trial, the key players in those trials, and especially US Law.

I whole heartedly recommend this book to any reader regardless of their background or bent for historical pieces.
The book entertains and educates at so many levels it is impossible to mention them all in such a short review.
READ IT!!!

If you enjoy Wayne Thiebaud's work, this book provides over 100 illustrations, 68 in full color and full scale, in the 206-page book. It is highly comparable to the Steven Nash book at less than half the price.
Because it was published in 1985, it omits more recent work, but most of Thiebaud's iconic images were completed by that date (when the artist was 65 years old). It includes landscapes as well as his wonderful paintings of food, the figure and "pop" objects. It was published in conjunction with a museum exhibition and includes full identification of each work shown. Excellent value for a very good artist monograph.
