Aleksandr Pika is a great northern anthropologist, and I am greatful that his work has been translated into English. This book is an excellent study of USSR policy as it has affected (and continues to affect) Native Siberians.

A trip to the Salons of Paris

A catalogue/book of a 1986 exhibition organised by the Fine Arts Museum of San Francisco with the National Gallery of Art, Washington.

An invaluable resource for anyone interested in the Impressionist period in modern art. The book begins with essays entitled: ` The Impressionists and Edouard Manet'; `The New Painting:Concerning the Group of Artists Exhibiting at the Durand-Ruel Galleries'; `The Intransigent Artist or How The Impressionists Got Their Name'; `The End of Impressionism';

The works are arranged around the catalogues of each of the Impressionist exhibitions in Paris (1974, 1876, 1877, 1879, 1880, 1881, 1882, 1886). Each section includes readable essays on the particular exhibition, and reproductions of and notes on the paintings represented in the San Francisco/ Washington exhibition , as well as reproductions of the catalogs of the original Impressionist exhibitions.

The quality of reproductions is very high, given the limitations of still enabling the book to remain affordable to the generalist reader.

There is a wealth of detail in this comprehensive work. The book would be a valuable addiditon to any secondary school, college or public library collection.

Highly recommended.

An inspirational tale

No Boundaries is the story of the author's rise from humble beginnings on the black side of a little town in the Florida Panhandle to the pinnacle of his profession as head of the American College of Surgeons, the American Cancer Society and the President's Cancer Panel. Dr. Leffall's story, honestly and often heart-wrenchingly told, recounts how he shattered racial barriers throughout his life simply by his determination to do every job well and learn from his own mistakes. It's a great read for anyone who wants to believe that hope and determination conquer narrow-mindedness and despair.

I suppose it is pretty silly to review a book of this age, but I loved it so much it's going on my list of books worth reviewing.

The language is wonderful and it's hard to believe that someone with such a range of interests and writing ability would be found in the ranks of the pioneers.

Churchill and De Gaule

Excellent description of the complex relationship between these two
famous WWII leaders. Both faced tremendously difficult odds against
Germany in June 1940, when the German armies quickly invaded
Benelux and France, throwing the British divisions back to England.
At a time where the US was only standing by, and France was overwhelmed by
a vastly superior ennemy, Churchill had the courage and vision to support De Gaulle's refusal to surrender and subsequent negation of the (collaborationist) Vichy government. The author also provides an excellent
description of the two men, describing their trials and highly tempestuous relationship, including their enduring -if severely tested- friendship. In the end, it becomes clear that both men indeed truly loved France -and what it stood for, expecting it to fulfill its European role after the war. The book also describes Roosevelt's persistent attempts to undermine De Gaulle while pressuring Churchill to do likewise -- perhaps the origin of the strained rapport betwen France and the US ?

More than poetry

I and other students referred to "An Introduction to Gaelic Poetry" again and again while at university. Yes, it is an introduction to Gaelic poetry and song, but it contains copious information about Gaelic Scotland and its relationship to Gaelic Ireland. Readers will learn something about the history of the Scottish Highlands through the words of Highlanders themselves. Most books about the Highlands are written by outsiders and many are patronizing and hostile. The book begins with 'Bardic Poetry', the poetry of the professional poets who travelled freely between the houses of the Gaelic noblity in Scotland and Ireland. Following chapters deal with the major political events of the 16th-20th centuries: the "English" Civil War (the War of the Three Kingdoms), the Jacobite Rebellions, the clearances, and World Wars I & II. Alongside all this is the poetry of gentler times: women's songs, love songs and songs of exile. All poetry and songs have been translated into English and unfortunately no Gaelic except the titles has been published. People who would like to read the Gaelic originals would have to read books such as J.L. Campbell's "Highland Songs of the Forty-five". Recently a bilingual Gaelic and English anthology of Gaelic poetry of the 20th century has been publlished, edited by Ronald Black. "An Introduction to Gaelic Poetry" is a great book for anyone interested in the Scottish Highlands.

This is an excellent book on Odessa, filled with hundreds of vintage photos of Odessa, all from before the 1917 revolution.

I would also recommend:

*Odessa: A history, 1794-1914 and

Touring Biology's Path to the Gene

Review Date: 2008-01-18
Sir Francis Crick provides a clear, compact exploration of the shape, size, and significance of the gene, the molecular basis of all life. He begins his discussion asking for a definition of aliveness. Then he traces clearly the path to our present knowledge of how the gene is structured and points out that its existence is totally a product of Darwinian evolution. This means that the gene is not the product of a prior plan, but results from a series of accidents. He also believes that most of the elements making up the gene can either now, or soon will, synthesize genes.
He describes the position of several scientists who posit an invisible, purposeful substance or influence which cause life to exist within the gene, called vitalism. He is highly critical of this position as being based on wishful thinking, or an attempt to support a theological assumption.
Crick is a partner in the Watson-Crick team who first described the structure of the gene in the 1950s. Watson wrote a very controversial account of the "race" to discover the gene's structure in his book "The Double Helix."
"Of Molecules and Men" is a delightful read, elegant, sparce, and by a genuine authority. Itis a surprisingly brief and informative examination of what the gene is which is enlightening for any reader.

"The Olympic Rain Forest: An Ecological Web" is an excellent book. From the first time I had opened this book, I found out that I had made a good choice.
"The Olympic Rain Forest: An Ecological Web" tells us about the wonderful ecosystem of the temperate rain forest of the Olympic Peninsula. The very interesting text with many detail information is enriched with many quality color photographs of magnificent trees, nice flowers and wild animals that we can see in the Olympic Rain Forest. The book describes whole history of this unique forest and perfectly explains an ecological web of the temperate rain forest.
I highly recommend this book for everyone who is interested in wildlife and nature conservation.
