A stunningly unique, beautiful book! Wege's glorious paintings are printed on fold-outs 40" wide (perfect to prop open on a sofa) so one can relish the vibrant matte colors throughout the day. She passionately grasps the essence of the changing seasons, the diverse locations, with colors and brushstrokes to astound you. Don't miss this very special book about the soul of our land and a very important concept: leaving wilderness alone.

Classic of Environmental History

Over the past two decades, Richard White has been one of the truly outstanding historians of the American West, Native America, and the environment. This, his first book, is not nearly as sweeping in scope as his later works, but is a masterful look at the environmental history of a small county in Western Washington that will interest any student of American history. White examines the interaction of humans and the environment in Island County, Washington, to demonstrate how humans have continuously shaped the land over thousands of years, and how these changes have been both conscious and accidental. The opening chapters concern Indian land use in the county, and conclude that native people largely determined the region's landscape by encouraging certain crops through burning of prairies and forests. While this insight is fairly obvious to most environmental historians now, it is a direct contradiction of the European opinion that Indians did not alter the land. White settlers also altered the landscape of Island County by introducing market agriculture and logging. These activities had drastic consequences, some intentional, such as the introduction of European crops, and some unintentional, like massive soil erosion and the accidental spread of the Canadian thistle, a weed that temporarily threatened farmers in the nineteenth century. The final chapters of the book concern twentieth century attempts to encourage settlement of Appalachian farmers on logged-off land (a fascinating New Deal effort that was a complete failure), and the attempt to change the island landscape for the benefit of tourists. This is a fascinating transformation that continues to this day. Overall, this is a very well-written classic of environmental history. The in-depth descriptions of ecological principles may scare off a novice reader, but the history embedded in the ecology is fascinating, and well worth the effort.

I came across this book by accident, and what a happy accident! I read it like a novel that I couldn't put down. If you are interested in the subject of native art, Alaska, or are just fascinated with cultural histories in general, you will enjoy this book. It is informative, educational, and feeds the passion for the simple beauty that exists in certain parts of the world like the Alaskan territories. In addition it has inspired and informed me to better plan my future trips to the area. Ray is real, and the book is beautiful with many pictures and descriptions of interesting facts and places. If you are planning a trip to Alaska, this is a book to have. Also described in her book is how to tell the difference between real and fraudulent art. If you plan to collect any pieces, this knowledge would be invaluable. This is one to keep.

Masuda, his family and friends suffer the humiliation and shame of being forced into camps. Then Masuda decides to fight for the country that put them in the camps. His remarkable choice is never questioned in years of letters, no matter how painful his combat experience. His correspondence reflects not only what is happening on the Europe front, but, insofar as it responds to correspondence from his wife and other Japanese-Americans, it reflects the human toll from the internment program. What makes this book so good is that Masuda is a gifted letter writer (a nearly lost art). The editor also did an outstanding job of providing historical context for Masuda's letters, as well as helping with abreviations and the occasional Japanese word. For anyone whose life was touched (no matter how remotely) by Japanese internment, this book is a must-read!

Insightful, innovative, highly readable, though at times dense. Cooper provides a novel analysis of the encounter between neoliberal innovation economies, biotechnology and the religious right. The strength of the book lies in its theoretical rigour and historical detail. It also advances some provocative ideas about the nature of neoliberal economics, namely that its long-term success is fed by its own regulation/deregulation dynamics.

Compared to most marine picture pictures, this one does a much better job than average in telling the history of an era. The captions are the books strength, and generally run for a few paragraphs. This is a good book if you would like to get a feeling of what it was like to live near or work on the water in the Pacific Northwest in the period from the late 1800s up to WWII
