I was floored by this book. It is diary of a group of men traveling to the yukon in search of gold. I was amazed at the things that they went through. In our relatively easy modren life, It is good to read about what extremes people would go through in the old days. To say that they had a rough journey would be an understatement. I would recommend this to anyone who wants to get a feel for what it must have been like to ber part of the gold rush in the Yukon territory.

I find this book to be very useful. Family mediation is of more and more importance in Hong Kong. However, most of the overseas books on the subject caters for people who has a western background. In fact, people in Hong Kong may think in a different way than their western counterparts. Therefore, this book, which takes into account the mentality of people in HK, is doubly useful, both in terms of theory and as a practical guide. I will give it five stars.

The Leaders Hide is On The Line

Countries sometimes to act like rival highschool teams. And the more similar the schools (or countries) the stronger the rivalry. In schools they play football. With countries they go to war.
But all of a sudden this doean't work any more. The Cold War never turned very hot. I've often wondered if this was because of nuclear weapons. For once, the old men can't sit around and send young people off to do the fighting. The old men, sitting in their capital building are just as much on the front line as the Grunt carrying a rifle. The longest stretch of time since the Roman era passed with the largest powers going to war.
In this book, the authors describe a similar situation that seems to exist between India and Pakistan. After fighting several smaller wars, both countries obtained atomic weapons. Now they have avoided a war. Did the leaders suddenly realize that their own personal hide was on the line?
Do you think that Osama would think differently if he was convinced that continued bombings might cause a mushroom cloud to grow over Mecca?

I bought this book for a history class on immigration and migration, and it made the subject come alive for me. In the midst of political upheaval and confusion about immigration and migration of Mexican and Hispanic people in the U.S., I would recommend this book for better understanding of the lives of our neighbors. It might help us become better neighbors ourselves.

Finding The People Who Flaked The Stone At English Camp: San Juan Island by Angela E. Close (Professor of Anthropology, University of Washington) is a seminal and scholarly study of American approaches to lithic analysis - that is, attempts to learn more about natural history through the study of the stones of the earth. Especially focusing upon the excavation of English Camp on San Juan island, Finding The People Who Flaked The Stone At English Camp applies an approach based on attempts to trace the life-histories of all excavated artifacts, from raw material procurement to discard and entry into archaeological record, and concludes that women did a great deal of the tool manufacture at the English Camp site. A highly precise and technical scientific study and persuasive discourse.

This book is a neccesity for anyone looking for fantastic wild flower sites within driving distance of the D.C./Baltimore area. It is co-written by Chris Fleming, field botanist with the Maryland Natural Heritage Program and popular teacher of Wild Flower I.D. at the Audubon Naturalist Society in Chevy Chase, MD. Each site is described by the wildflowers you can expect to see in every season and directions are given as well as any info needed about gaining access to the site. Learn where to see one of the largest stands of Giant-flowered trillium (Trillium grandiflorum) you will ever see or visit the only known site in Maryland to observe the beautiful Fringed Gentian (Gentiana crinita). This book will keep you busy for many weekends of wild flower exploration.

Told as a series of short biographies of people and places of the day, it is very readable, accessible, and educational at the same time.
I highly recommend this book, and hope the authors are working on a sequel that covers the next era in Seattle's rich history!
