field trip time

Review Date: 2005-01-08
This is the fifth book about Miss Malarkey and her class. This time they are off on a field trip to the science center. The class really show no respect for the teachers of the parent helpers. They do things like they bury one another in the fossil pit and get stuck in one of the displays. The kids think that he field trip was a great success but Miss Malarkey isn't so sure!

The pictures are great, and the small details add to the humor. It is creative and funny for both children and adults.

This would be a good book to read with a class before a field trip. The book can lead to many discussion on field trip behavior and respect for elders.

the moffat museum is not as good as the first 3 but is still good. It's funny but sylvie is gone halfway through. But that leads to some great stories. It only follows jane and rufus though. Joey and sylvie's views are never shown. but i like the stories so it's worth 4 stars.

a text to understand the present condition of museums
Helpful Votes: 6 out of 13 total.
Review Date: 2001-03-26
hein's text makes a general, but intersting and highly complete, overview of the present condition of museums. This texts refers to the past history of these institutions in order to promote a better understanding of them, and the role they play, in our contemporary cultural system. Arguing on the "trascendence of the object" hein makes an excellent analysis on the "museum experience" in order to understand this phenomenon providing a critical perspective on this issue. It is not too philosophical as the tittle claims, so it is not a difficult text to read and understand.

Forensics By Number
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2004-11-14
In the tenth book of the Third Grade Detectives series, the young detectives stumble onto a mystery during a field trip to an art museum. The "priceless fifteenth-century statue of Joan of Arc," on loan from a Paris museum that they have come to see has been stolen! There is something very suspicious about Willie, the janitor who works at the museum. And, it is apparent that the director of the museum, Dr. Kirk, is not terribly eager for the children's assistance in finding the statue. Since these third graders are also intrepid detectives, under the guidance of Mr. Merlin - who is not only their teacher, but also a former spy - they are sure that they can help solve the mystery of what has become of the statue. Before they can begin their search, however, the police discover the statue, broken into tiny pieces, in a nearby dumpster. It is up to the third graders to break the coded messages given to them by Mr. Merlin in order to reveal the truth about the statue and why it was stolen. Using forensic evidence and the help of a police crime lab, they ultimately discover the mystery of the stolen statue.

The stated age group for this book is 6-9 years old and readers of this series will find that this book lives up to their expectations. The author follows the formula used in previous books and not only provides readers with a mystery to solve, but uses interactive clues so that his young readers will scramble to uncover the answers along with the children in the book. He also provides age-appropriate scientific information for his readers, which is a fun way for young children to learn new science facts. Young readers will enjoy solving the mystery and learning new information at the same time.

In a Nutshell....

Let me first state that you can buy this book autographed by the Author from the Norman Rockwell Museum directly from their site for $149.

The book itself is a bit anti climactic for me. It encompasses all of Rockwell's work but showcases it in GLORIOUS BLACK AND WHITE!!!

Yes folks its everything you ever wanted to see in none of the color. The few color plates you do get are stunning however. There are just too few to offset the disappointment.

This book has to be seen as a catalogue of Rockwell's work. In fact we get to see variations of the same illustrations in different forms.

Its a great book and I highly recommend it after you've bought all the other books the illustrations are taken from. Buechener, Guptil, Finch etc.

If you wanna start your collection of Rockwell art books get the saturday evening post covers (Starkey, Flythe)the complete cover collection 1916-1971. Then go from there. So far it is the best quality book Ive found that showcases color print in finest detail.

A Great Guide

This book lends to easy reading and can be finished quite quickly. The world of information it includes is priceless. The book includes titles of must have museum career guides and addresses on how to obtain them. The personal stories from the professionals were a great way to learn more about daily job activities, pitfalls, and salaries. I just wish the personal stories would have been more varied so to included entry level positions and specializations. I also wish the author would have gone deeper into the future outlook of museum careers. This book is a must have for those interested in museum careers

Painting for 'The Public'

I had to do a presentation on this book for a university class on collecting and collectors (that was a real class, and a good one) and ended up really liking this book. It's not necessarily something you'd read for fun, but for anyone who's interested in the history of art in relation to the public it's a very complete and well written work.

The book creates a context for eighteenth century art; an art that brought together social mores, classical convention and public demand and yet still remained aesthetically appealing. It does analyze art, but it's not so much an examination of the style of a period as it is a survey of how the presentation of art to the public has changed - and how that presentation has changed art. How did artists go from paid portraiture to public exhibitions? What are the origins of charity in the art world? How did The Public, as a whole, begin to dictate art? Solkin covers these questions in a surprisingly accessible style.

For the modern retelling, that is to say, how art has been appropriated in the modern public mind please read Tom Wolfe's The Painted Word. These books really complement each other.

Excellent book on resolving conflict!

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book with my pre-schooler. I liked how the author gives us two characters who have a lot of differences, yet are such good friends. The names of the main characters also goes beyond what we might typically think of as boy or girl likes and dislikes. For example, the boy's name is Pinky because he likes the color pink, and the girl's name is Rex because that's her favorite dinosaur. The thing I enjoyed most about this book though was that towards the end they come across a problem where only one dinosaur is left to purchase from the museum gift shop. I really liked how these children learned to resolve the problem on their own and did so creatively! What a wonderful lesson for children to learn!

Pinkerton is losing his baby teeth! Everything in the house is getting chewed to pieces and you will never believe what happens when Pinkerton tags along on a school field trip to the museum!

The Pinkerton books have always been among our favorites and "Prehistoric Pinkerton" is no exception. The illustrations are wonderful and the story is magnificient!

I first borrowed this book from my local library in 1985, and continued to do so, always returning it late, then suddenly it was gone, no explanation from the librarian, just a stony face. Now in 1998, I got it from Amazon.com, and it's just as brilliant!!!
