Although good, but very BASIC guide to decathlon. If you're envolved in Track & Field already, 99.9% chance is that you already know 99% of what this book is talking about; things such as common injuries, basic nutrition needs, what to bring with you to the meet, training with (a) partner(s) is better than alone, implements needed for decathlon (shot, discus, javeline...)...etc

As far as training, this book gives you a BASIC, sample, two-week split for traing 10 events.

You may learn some history of the event however; Find out how top U.S.A. decathletes were introduced to the event.

The part I found most useful for myself, is the scoring tables. Gives you an idea of what performances in each event will lead to a world class score.

Bottom line, this book is good, but VERY BASIC. Good for encouraging future decathletes, and gives you an idea of what its all about. If you're looking for a serious traing guide - look elsewhere.

I used this book to teach a P.E. class in basketball. It is a good 'text' type book for such a need.

It is a long read, and you might skip over or quickly scan through some of it, but you will want to at least look at every page. I knew some people in the book, heard of others, and others I had no idea about. But there are so many neat stories, it was well worth it.

It was interesting to read about Bernie too. He spoke at my HS lettermans banquet back in the early 80s. Sounds like he did a lot of that.

Informative but DRY!

A great treatise on the relationship between America's love of sports and America's conflicted attitudes about race. But I can't imagine how the knowledgable authors could have written a book that is harder to read. They never use a simple word when a complex one will do; never go for short when long will do.

Don't read this book when you're sleepy, you'll never finish it. But if you are in a scholarly mode, you will learn a lot. I did.

Excellent Book

Tim Judah writes an excellent biographical book about a superstar athlete, Abebe Bikila, whom has not had enough written about him given his athletic prowess. His book attempts to factually tell the story of Bikila which is something that Paul Rambali appeared to not even attempt when he wrote his book about the same runner. Judah's book also does a superb biographical job telling about Bikila's coach, Niskanen, whom otherwise is forgotten in history.
With so little written about this great athlete, this is a MUST READ BOOK!

These are excellent, incredibly impressive amount of information, for those delving into serious analysis in this area.

Blue Ribbon College Basketball Forecast: 1997-98 by Chris Dortch breaks down all the NCAA top level basketball teams for the coming season, and looks at the year before. It gives information on positions for players, likely minutes, depth, possible performance and a lot of other information you wouldn't find anywhere else in one source. Slightly changed, but still an excellent book.

Very Interesting Read

As a college basketball fan, I found this book to be very interesting. As the book claims on its back cover, it really does provide a behind-the-scenes look at a Division I basketball program. It also provided quite a bit of background information throughout Penders 10 years, all of which culminated in the final season and nasty ending. Not being a Texas fan personally, I recommend it to all college basketball fans who enjoy reading about the greatest sport on earth.

The book Careers for Sports Nuts and Other Athletic Types by Ray Heitzmann is a great informational book. The book tells about occupations in the athletic department. For example the book describes jobs like physical therapy, coaching, sports communication and much more. This book is more for high school students who want to go into athletics for an occupation. I believe this book is a great book. I choose this book because I want to go into athletics; this book helped me narrow my choices.

The book Careers for Sports Nuts and Other Athletic Types reminds me of the lawyers in Inherit the Wind. In Inherit the Wind the lawyers are very successful. For example one of t he charters ran for president three times. I also recommend reading Inherit the Wind.

A good book for a lot of exercises
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.

This book contains the Muscle/Tendon change classic, short form of Tai Chi, 8 piece of brocade (Ba Duan Jin), and some other exercises. This alone was worth the price of the book; less than $10.00. But it also contains a nice section on chinese massage. Basically two books for less than $10. The other books with the Muscle/Tendon change classic I've seen range about $30.
