Departments and Programs Books

I bought and then returned this book. From the description I expected a guide with detail about the different schools and programs, as well as inside information on the schools. Instead, the book contains a couple pages about audition procedures (a much better description is in the Performing Arts Major's College Guide) accompanied by basic information that is easily available off of the school websites (location, number of students plus number of students majoring in the discipline, teacher/student ratios, etc.). It was impossible to tell which programs had a good reputation or better quality. Save your money, and get the information off of the school websites.

I was expecting something more along the line of what the Princeton Review makes for undergraduate colleges or med schools ... not at all. This book is useless. They basically provide you with contact information, which I can look that up online for free. All they do is list programs and do not include any helpful information about them such as admission statistics or student opinions.

This book is not helpful when trying to find a degree program that matches your interests. Only for a handful of universities do they provide the masters programs offered by the school.

We looked up the NIU college of performing arts and the ENTIRE entry was copied from the NIU college of liberal arts and sciences...What does having a plant molecular biology center have to do with performing arts?

Most of the book is just basic information: phone numbers, addresses, and requirements for admissions. But this information is useless to me unless I intened to call every single school and find out what programs they offer. It's easier to just search over the interenet!

I had hoped to use this CD in preparing a course "Physics of Weapons and Their Control" for non-science majors, but found it next to useless for my purposes. It contains perhaps 200 images, each with no identification other than a file name like "pic7.jpg", and thousands of pages of government documents with no index or useful table of contents (its "table of contents" simply names 4 groups of documents averaging over 6000 pages each). It advises the user to use Adobe's search function to find information of use. For me it was useless.

Don't overlook the fact that this is a CD-ROM, not a book. That could be considered an innovative delivery mechanism, especially for the various movies (".mov" and ".avi") that are included. From the README on the disk though, you'll learn that this is a "privately compiled collection of public domain U.S. Government Documents". Translation: "We're charging you for putting stuff you could get for free onto CD-ROM". I guess that saves you cruising the net yourself, but I'd recommend doing a web search over actually paying for this collection of otherwise free government information.

The title does not suggest that this book really covers only a few of the many art schools in the country--only 23, I think (I've returned the book). Many of the top schools (according to US News and World Report) are not here. The general information about application procedures, etc., can probably be easily gotten online. If you're looking for an undergraduate art programs listing with descriptions, but without evaluation, the Peterson's guide is much more comprehensive. This book was a disappointment.

There were no reviews of this book when I purchased it, so I want to give others some forewarning. This book is far from comprehensive in the schools it reviews. It appears that the highlighted schools paid for space here, as there are full-page advertisements for them as well. This book does not tell you which schools are the best for your major or anything helpful to a college search at all. By all means, dont puchase it.

While this book does list the 2,300 ABET-accredited programs, that is about all it does. It offers "comprehensive program profiles" on fewer than 100 of them. The first three schools I tried to look up (all major east coast universities) aren't included in the profiles. In addition, the tear-out postcards included make this look more like a marketing ploy than a useful guide. Bottom line: There is nothing here that you can't quickly find elsewhere -- for free. I'm in the middle of some serious research on these kinds of programs -- in an effort to make a college choice. This so-called guide was a major disappointment. It's going back for a refund.

I was disappointed to discover that major engineering schools such as MIT were not included in this catalog. This catalog is for foreign students planning to come to the the US to study engineering, not US high school students.

A lot of outdated and unorganized data. Just a collection of files from the internet.

I got this book as a first step towards understanding graduate school. I briefly flipped through it, and have yet to open it again. If you are interested in a "hard" science graduate program, this book is 100% worthless. Combining biased school reviews, (a large number of top schools including Rockefeller, Scripps, Baylor,Tufts, and Einstein are wholly left out), school/location@descriptions that read more like gossip and heresay than objective observation, a paucity of program listings and desriptions (many program listings are merely the schools all encompassing website address), and straight out poor editing make this book better for starting a fire than trying to get an idea of graduate school. All the information contained in this book, plus far more, is available on the internet, and it's free.

Acting Under Secretary of Defense for Acquisition, Technology and Logistics Michael Wynne spoke on transformational goals at a general session of the 2004 DoD Mentor-Protege Conference on March 16, 2004. This article is brief of a speech by Michael Wynne, taken from Defense AT & L Magazine, without illustrations. The illustrations seemed to carry a critical role in this article, so without the illustrations the value of the article is significantly diminished.

The title of this article is misleading. I thought that this paper is about business incubators. By a business incubator I understand a facility that aids the early-stage growth of companies by providing rental space, shared office services, and business consulting assistance. In this article, the word "incubator" only occurs in the title, and never in the text.

I have found this article during my research of the topic of business incubators, when I was involved in writing an academic paper about business incubators. For me, this article was of very little value. Instead of this paper, I can recommend "Business incubators and new venture creation: an assessment of incubating models" by Rosa Grimaldi, and Alessandro Grandi, published in Technovation, Volume 25, Issue 2 , February 2005, Pages 111-121, which identifies four (different) main types of incubators: Business Innovation Centres (BICs), University Business Incubators (UBIs), Independent Private Incubators (IPIs), and Corporate Private Incubators (CPIs). I can also recommend the book "Incubators: A Realist's Guide to the World's New Business Accelerators" by Colin Barrow.

This volume is not accurate. I have found cases of instructors being listed as PhD's and researchers. Also, affiliated faculty members are listed as regular faculty.

For potential students involved in the search for graduate schools in the Humanities, this book does not offer valuable information. Once in the post-baccalaureate arena, information such as the names of top faculty, department specialties, and available teaching assistantships are necessary information. As well, this book lacks a specific breakdown of ALL programs, particularly those in English. Such a book needs to be published!
