Best Guidebook for D.C. History

This is _the_ guidebook if you want to delve deeply into the City's history. It is chock full of interesting tidbits and historical information that bring the city alive. This is _not_ the guidebook for you if you are looking for the most updated information on museum hours and the like, if you are planning a quick trip the D.C. and want to hit just the main attractions, or if you need detailed maps (and metro information) for getting around the city. In other words, this book will satisfy your desire to really experience and get to know D.C. but it is not the best book to flip through when you suddenly realize that you are lost and need to figure out where to go. For better maps and more succinct descriptions of sites and restaurants, seek out Access Washington, D.C. by Richard Saul Wurman.

Pardon my bias...

I will tell you right off the bat that I like this book very much, that I love Donald Keene very much, and that he's my sensei. Therefore, go ahead and mark the "this review was not helpful" box if you must.
I'm not saying I've lost all forms of objectivity... I'm just saying that this book was clearly intended, at its core audience level, for someone like me, and, quite simply, it has hit the mark. Call me biased if you want, but if you're a reader of my particular bend, it shouldn't matter.
It's not a perfect book. It could have included more. However, what it does, it does damn well, and it's very deserving of five-stars.
Throughout the different sections, Donald's essays on various topics are presented, often introduced through humorous and/or meaningful anecdotes of his own. The entries are all very interesting and lively to read, insightful memoirs from someone who understands Japanese literature, language and culture well and conveys that understanding better than probably anyone else. Writings included in this book are rare, and they are not found in his other volumes. Most of them were published in magazines and newspapers, many Japanese. Some of this is appearing in English for the first time, and all of it, unless you have access to tremendous research capabilities, will be difficult, if not impossible, to find elsewhere. It is all of high-quality and more than worthy of a spot on the bookshelf of any taroukaja.
Donald Keene will be a legend after he dies. If you want to get to know him, read this book. It's as close as you can get to him, and nothing is hidden.
So there's my bias for you. I laid it bare on the table. It's warranted, though, and since no one else has taken the time to review this book, you're stuck with my very favorable opinion. :)

This collection is not only beautiful but hugely significant in the marking of a totally unique Black Experience. Congratulations to Mr.Compton for bringing this to light! The history of the western most province in Canada is unusual in that it is one of very few places that does not, or rather, no longer, has a centralised black Community.A positive aspect of this is that it is not a ghettoised community. The difficult part is that one can have the sense that this still significant and growing community is permanently fractured. What Compton does so well is bring this unique history together. This beautiful blues people pioneering history appears alongside the children of hiphop now. One gets an overview that stretches and eases into that phat orange Pacific sunset.
The book is an inspired Rocky Mountain solid collection of historical document and contemporary prose and poetry .
Recline and read.

Luanne has captured the essence of what it is to exist in a rural community. I've met the characters in the story and spent long hours on the roads of the communities she writes so passionately about. This is a great book to share with those you care about.

Best Book on the Bone Wars!

I'll make this brief-- I bought all the other books on the Bone War controversy about Cope, March and the peripheral players, and while all the books were very good, in my opinion this one is the best. Without going overboard with detail, it presents all the important facts and more. It provides good history leading up to the controversy. Finally, this one has very interesting photos of the actual areas where these fossils were discovered so the aspect of topography/geology is clearer. This helped me visualize the collecting scenes better. Also, it's out of print and available for a song right now. Excellent book! Written by a professor who grew up in one of the areas where the fossils are found and he really knows his stuff.

ostrowski handles the daunting task of a historical review of the LOC with expert finesse and lucidity. it should be mandatory reading in all middle schools, high schools, undergraduate and graduate institutions. MTSU is lucky to have an erudite such as ostrowski. hollywood beware! i see an epic along the lines of "gone with the wind" brewing.

Terrific guide to little-known bookstores

If you are a book lover, and are visiting New York City (or if you live there!) don't miss this terrific book. Venture beyond Barnes and Noble, and find specialty bookstores of every kind, from cookbooks to yoga, from a tiny bookstall to the Strand. Some of the information is out of date, since bookstores move or even go out of business, so supplement this with an up-to-date copy of the yellow pages, but don't miss this book! If browsing through dusty bookshelves is your idea of heaven, this book will be an invaluable reference, I use mine every time I go into the city.

Of course, I loved the book. It's well paced, entertaining, and insightful to a moment in russian history. Pushkin's charm as an dramatist is as well done as shakespeare. There aren't as many quotable lines, but that only makes it more fluent to read. The poetry is also nothing shy of great and the characters are well written, notably boris and the impostor. It's always tough to find russian literiture that doesn't bore a person, but pushkin's drama has enough romance (i.e. Romantic era), action, jokes, and touching speeches to move the reader to bite their nails, laugh out loud, and cry.
