'Classic Hikes' is one of only a few highly detailed and informative books on the subject of hiking the West Coast of Canada.

It is surprisingly detailed in the amount and variety of information it presents to hikers\ of of all abilities, from extremely precise hiking maps extending to information about area climate, blister first aid, hiking boots, keeping clean and basic hiking survival.

The photographs were taken by the writer and give a realistic and colorful view of the area being hiked. The sidebars are one of the highlights of the book, giving some valuable and fascinating information on things that you may see and do along your hike not normally mentionedd in a book on hiking. The topics may vary from Ice Worms to rock climbing to surfing and cycling.

The crowning highlight of the book is its feature on rarely known information concerning the world famous West Coast Trail hike, such as mandatory registration and limited allowable group size. The variety and scope of the hike is fully explored from the mafnificant coastline to the caves, lush rainforests, waterfalls and rich wildlife.

The information presented in the book is sensible, humurous and easily understood by the beginng hiker while not boring the more advanced hiker interested in specific information such as hike ratings and emergency shelter huts.

It is rare to see a hiking book that combines all of the above mentioned information written in a unique and humuorous style for the hiker interested in hiking the West Coast of Canada.

An excellent textbook

A very informative and useful book, unlike any other available text in this field in terms of its accessibility and attention to detail. After an overview of basic sentence structure and orthography, the chapters set out the major inflected parts of speech (verbs, adjectives, adjectival verbs, and verb suffixes or jodôshi), followed by non-inflected parts of speech (particles and nouns). The verb suffixes and particles are grouped by function, allowing the subtle differences between similar expressions to be made clear. The final chapters cover honorifics and Nara-period expressions. In all chapters, the grammatical explanations are clear and concise, and the functions of the expressions under discussion are well illustrated by the example sentences, drawn from classical texts.

More advanced material is clearly marked in the "Advanced Study and Reference" sections found throughout the chapters. The inclusion of such material allows the book to serve as a reference for advanced students, but its clear separation in the "Advanced Study and Reference" sections means that it does not overwhelm beginners. The "Historical Note" sections, also found throughout the chapters, describe the evolution of various Japanese expressions over time. This information is not only of interest to advanced learners, but is useful for demonstrating to beginning bungo students the relationship between some classical and modern Japanese expressions. The exercises appended to each chapter provide a valuable opportunity for students to become familiar with classical expressions within a limited context, before going on to read longer texts, and the tables of grammatical forms in the accompanying booklet are extremely useful for quick reference.

All in all, a highly readable work which should be of great interest to students and scholars of classical Japanese regardless of their level of ability.

This is the only English language textbook of classical Japanese that is readily available, and it far surpasses earlier attempts to create such a textbook. It is well-organized, explanations of grammatical issues are lucid, examples are aptly chosen, and it is eminently suitable both for teaching and for self-study. Teachers and students of classical Japanese have waited years for a textbook of this caliber and may now celebrate its arrival. Contrary to one other reviewer's complaint, the textbook is indeed a "package" accompanied by a 50-page booklet providing answers to exercises and very convenient tables of basic grammatical forms.

If you like Colombia, as much as I like, you have to have this piece of jewelry in your coffee table. It is also a good idea if you want to surprise somebody you know that likes Colombia, or wants to learn about it. Unbelievable pictures in fold-in pages. Divided in zones and perfectly explained in Spanish about every detail in each breath-taking picture. Hard Cover. 260 full color pages.

This is honestly one of the best ever depictions of such a rich country, not only in culture, art, architecture, history and geographical variety, but in the people, the spirit, the colors and the sharp contrasts that this beautiful country has.
The photographer exposes an intimate and personal view that allows us to be inside the picture, as if living it ourselves. He has entered areas and dangerous zones to show us those existing contrasts, and has exposed us to the magnificense of this varied country. It is a perfect example of being able to see through someone else's eyes, and how beautiful it is.

This is one of the finest historical novels that I have read. I am a real fan of Pamela Jeckel. All of her novels are meticulously researched and historically accurate. Her use of both the human saga and the animal life of the area are interwoven and really two stories in one. I am a Northwest native and reading of the history of the mighty Columbia before man was in the area, to the building of the Gramd Coulee Dam was an eye opener. The lives of the characters are interwoven from the Portland Chinese immigrant woman, the Indian shaman, and the dam builder. A terrific book.

I read an earlier edition of this book and was very impressed. Part of my MA thesis is on Lao She. My only complaint about this anthology is that it does not contain his novella, "Crescent Moon." This anthology is about 750 pages and includes most all of 20th century China, including Taiwan and a few non-Han Chinese authors. The selections are excellent and the stories are self-contained, i.e. they are short stories, poems, essays, or novellas, not extracted chapters. The spellings are pinyin, not Wade-Giles. I would highly recommend it to someone wanting a large pool of 20th century Chinese authors.

This anthology presents a superb cross section of Chinese literature, from the time of Lu Xun to the present. The editors have included works from the mainland, as well as Taiwan, and the scope of authors and genres is tremendous for a single volume. A good starting point for anyone interested in Chinese literature, as well as those already familiar with it.

always catches my interest.

Brilliant Overview of Jefferson's Philosophy

Review Date: 2003-04-07
Professor Koch performs a valuable service in this book. She shows how Thomas Jefferson had a coherent philosophy in contrast to those who maintain that he was devoid of one. Koch relates how Jefferson studied religion, republicanism, natural rights, philology, ideology, education, philosophy, etc. She shows how Jefferson had voracious appetite for learning not just what we do, but why. He was a student of Bacon,Locke, and a later follower of De Tracy, Stewart, and Say. Koch shhows Jefferson's belief in human progress and improvability were cornerstones of Jefferson's belief system. Overall a wonderful book.

Scholarly Review of Jefferson's Philosophy

Review Date: 2002-04-05
This is a scholarly and well-documented look at the contents and sources of Jefferson's beliefs in Deism, natural law, teachings of Jesus, and Stoic and Epicurean philosophy. Notable topics include: (1) Koch disputing noted Jefferson scholar Gilbert Chinard's claim that Jefferson turned from the Stoics to Epicurus by arguing that the two philosophies are not incompatible. (2) Jefferson's belief that morality lay in the motives and intentions behind actions: "how" and "why" something done is being as important as "what" is done. Koch claims this is why he turned from ancient philosophers to moral teachings of Jesus. (3) Jefferson's belief in the innate moral sense: where he acquired the belief, how he extended it by adding the pursuit of happiness, and what he thought was the best expression of the moral sense. (4) How Jefferson derived his ideas about natural rights from the moral sense theory of Lord Kames and how he applied it in political philosophy to develop ideas about political rights and majority rule. (5) Sources of Jefferson's Deism and an evaluation of whether his views were closest to the English or the French Deists.

This is a book written in easy to understand terms, that takes away much of the fear-out-of-ignorance associated with mental illness. It has the potential of taking the reader from a state of ignorance to the level of being able to take a first crack at diagnosis.

"The epitome of success"

Review Date: 2003-06-18
Orison Swett Marden was the original editor-in-chief of the now defunct "Success" magazine. In fact, he probably rolled over in his grave when the magazine went out of publication. It was a time of mourning for me. In fact, I was just in the process of renewing my subscription when I found out..."Success" was no longer successful (how ironic).
This set of books is excellent. Most of the writing is examples of successful people from the past and present (1911). This type of motivational writing tends to get repetitive, however, there is a lot of advise tucked carefully between the many examples given. It was a very different world when the author wrote this book, but as I read it I noticed, the more things change, the more they stay the same. One difference I like is the chivalry and honesty exhibited from the time period. Even the highest standards of decency today are a far cry from that time. It was a lot of fun reading some of the examples from that era and knowing they were current events. These books are well worth the read, if you can find them.

This book is the greatest book that I have ever read next to the Bible. It is in my opinion the premiere self help of all times. After reading this book your life will never be the same. Marden is able to capture the essence of life, self development and true success. If you have read other self help books you will see how many modern day writers, used much of his material to develop their thoughts and philosophy.

Although this book was written in the early 20th century, its message is truly timeless.

In depth
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2007-04-22
This is a great book for someone researching the Zoroastrian faith and religion. It is not the most up to date work, but it contains far more in depth information than more modern works which have skipped some of the finer details.
I wouldn't recommend this for the beginner - they would be better served by such works as "Persian myths" by Curtis, "Persian Mythology" by Hinnells, or "Wise Lord of the sky" by Allan.
But for someone wishing to research the religion, this and R.C. Zaehner's books are truly excellent.

The First Monotheistic Religion Explored in Depth!

This is an excellent book. It has pulled together all the available literature on this very old religion and helped to make it understandable in modern times. One can see by reading this book where cross pollination between Judaism and Gnosticism exists...and to some extent, the Vedas from Hinduism. Very thoroughly researched.
