This book helped me get a good start in my Accounting college courses. It lays out the fundamental principles of Accounting simply and clearly. Its emphasis on the process leading to, creation of, and analysis of financial statements, would be very helpful to anyone who may need to understand just what a company's financial statements really mean

This book should be on the shelf of very instructional designer and course developer responsible for creating computer-based training or web-based training. The book stands out for three important reasons: (1) if offers concrete directions regarding how to develop instruction at the lesson level; (2) the recommendations are based on research findings and when research findings are contradictory the authors acknowledge the divergence; and (3) the book is well written, it is accessible to the average reader. The first chapter **alone** makes the book worth the price - it will help you answer the question "What is the difference between information and instruction?"

A wide-ranging overview of methods and development for CBI
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 1998-09-11
Seen from the point fo view of a non-expert readers, and comparing with <10 other books on similar subjects, the book looks quite good. It covers most of the basic types of learning activities (tutorials, drills, simulations, educational games and tests), plus a detailled overview on more organisational issues (analysis, design, ...), some chapters on technology for implementation of CBI as well as more advanced topics as instructional modelling, computer managed instruction and AI-techniques. Good reading, no hyper-specialised vocabulary. Happy that my holiday in canada brought me back this good reading to Flanders (Belgiium/Europe). Coming from an IT background (engineering & computing), it gives some goods clues on project management for development of CBI products. Les solid on educational/didactic theories.

Hesitating between 3 and 4 stars (don't feedl myself sufficiently qualified to give higher scores).

This book is excellent. There are many sections, in fact, which I will refer back to later as job aids. This book reinforces and elaborates on many concepts and methods that I, as an instructional designer, have been using intuitively when developing courses. It provides a structure to the process of organizing content and developing computer-based training. The only drawback to this book is that it is slightly out of date from a technology standpoint. However, it is so strong in every other area, including instructional design, interface design, interactivity design, and project management, that its strengths far outweigh its weaknesses. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who designs or develops CBT and WBT, I think it will prove to be a valuable resource.

"From Concept to Consumer" is the first book I recommend to people who are truly interested in the business of fashion. Even though the book is a textbook it is an easy and fast read. One of the best features of this book is the sequential order format. The author takes you step by step through the development of the fashion process BEFORE a single garment is made by briefly describing fashion forcasting, research, color, fabric and trend analysis. The next process explains how raw materials for fabrics are chosen, processed and produced into textiles. Learn about the marketing of these textiles on the international market and to major apparel manufacturers. All of this takes place before the designer even starts to design a collection! Take a look inside the channels of garment distribution and on to us the consumer. This book provides a realistic insiders view in to the industry which is often glamorized by high profile designers and media spokespeople. Folks the business of fashion is a solid industry just like any other and in my opinion even more interesting than all the fluff and the sizzle.

The central book in this series Lifemanship:Some Notes on Lifemanship with a Summary of Recent Research in Gamesmanship is a classic for anyone nerous about social encounters. You know the type, the ones who are always suspecting that everyone else is scrutinizing their every word and gesture. Well, according to these books, they are. There is a defense though (and a way to make those others who share the anxiety still more worried). This is one of those that is a good laugh, but not ENTIRELY facetious.

If your knowledge of British humour begins and ends with Monty Python, or if you think Austin Powers really is British, then this book will be an eye-opener for you. Where the Pythons provide an in-your-face, broad, loud, slapstick experience, Stephen Potter is exquisitely dry and understated. He sets about on the thankless and nearly impossible task of teaching us perfectly ordinary people how to lord it over our peers. Or betters, for that matter. Doctors, for instance, assume a state of instant authority and dominance by the simple act of having us remove our clothes first thing. How to counter this age-old tactic? Arrange for a female acquaintance to call you as soon as you're starkers, and engage in a knee-slapping, ribald conversation. Any doctor will have a hard time meeting your eyes after that call! A salesman should never rush a pen into his client's hand, hoping he'll skip the fine print. Instead, read out loud the most obfuscatory phrases ("whereas the party hereinafter called the copyholders shall within the discretion of both signatories ..."), and have a shared laugh as you both try to figure out what they can possibly mean. It's good form to then pat your pockets, looking in vain for a pen. Done properly, the client will offer his own pen, which of course you'll take home with you.

If you're not used to reading the Queen's English, you'd better have a dictionary (preferably the O.E.D.) close at hand. Despite the passing of half a century, some of these ploys and gambits will be fresh and viable today. Mind you, I should avoid any driving advice given by Plaste, tempting though it may be. Though if you're afraid of heights, then the Art of Not Rockclimbing will suit you to a "t". This is all brilliant stuff, though the connoisseur will prefer the all-in-one volume, "The Complete Upmanship: Including Gamesmanship, Lifemanship, One-Upmanship, Supermanship." Highly, highly recommended.

Potter caqptures the essence of British humor. He wrote circa 1950 and was a master at capitalizing on observations for the purposes of gaining an edge in the most humorous of cicumstances. The British understatement and preoccupation for the unimportant things in life is the starting point for Potter to describe how life should be lived. From how to decorate ones office, how to walk in a museum, how to properly answer the telephone, to what to wear for golf has been reduced to a science so that the other person will ultimately feel uncomfortable and off balance. If one can possibly think British, then this book may be one of the funniest books ever written.

One would hope that in today crass atmosphere such ploys are still advantageous but I doubt it. In fact I'll wager that there is not one person in a thousand who can identify this book as the source of the popularity of the word "ploy" although the word is widely used. Read it, it's fun.

The text was used for a graduate level class in the MBA Program at Oklahoma City University. As such, it is easy to see that it is an important tool to aid in understanding management of people in the American work place.

I do however have one criticism. The text does not do a good job at distinguishing between managing and leading. In my opinion, they are two different titles for those who take the reigns of an organiation.

I work as a management consultant specializing in organizational behavior change in Japan, and this book gives me hundreds of useful ideas. Actually "The Essentials of Organizational Behavior" by Dr. Robbins is translated into Japanese language, which is also a great book. "Organizational Behavior", however, is even better. I have been an intensive reader of Professor Robbins' books since I was a grad student. What I recommend most out of his books is this "Organizational Behavior". Its comprehensive, albeit detailed and reader-friendly contents (e.g., lists of WWW URLs in each chaper to facilitate readers' in-depth learning) has always inspired me. Now, as an Associate Professor of Organizational Behavior, I am fully convinced of the fact that my students always thank me for adopting this book as the text of my course. I hope every substantial reader will find the significant usefulness of this book, the essential text.

The Export of Revolution
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-01-03
Needless to say the history of the French Revolution that began in 1789 and, arguably, has not been completed yet has been looked at from every possible perspective, some of them noteworthy others merely cumulative. In Professor Palmer's little book I believe we have a noteworthy one although the good professor and I would not share the same reasons for that fact. A careful look, as here, at the influence of the French Revolution on Europeon politics, other national liberation movements of the time and the exigencies of military policy make this a worthy study.

At the end of 2007 we have been through a period when the American Bush Administration policy in the Middle East has seen as one of its aims the `export of democracy'; in the terminology of the French Revolution the `export of revolution'. I would also note that during the height of the Cold War with the former Soviet Union, particularly in the immediate post World War II period the `export of revolution' in that case, socialist, raised it head. Thus, the central point of Palmer's book in relationship to the French Revolution today offers some important historical lessons about that phenomenon.

Professor Palmer divides his work into sections dealing with the pre-revolutionary period, the immediate issues of the revolutionary and the significant period of the reign of the Committee of Public Safety in the 1793-94 period. Those parts are fairly common in most studies. What he does additionally is give space to the various external movements influenced by the French example and the policies of the various adversaries of the French. Further he ties the whole period together by giving a fair outline of the Directory period (basically 1794-99) that is overlooked or undervalued in most works and the policies of the various governments toward outside revolutionary movements. This is also the period when the various republics, French created or otherwise, spring into being.

If there is one definitive conclusion that drifts through the Professor's work it is that it is hard, extremely hard, to successfully export revolution, even world historic revolutions like the French one. For one thing history has shown more than one time disagreements on the question within the ruling strata of the revolutionary state. At various times, depending on internal French politics, there was hostility or indifference to those like, the Polish, who wished to emulate or come under French protection. Palmer gives us the highlights to further search for the relationship between local indigenous forces, the role of French military success on the ground and other governmental considerations that forced the creation of a least six French-like republics in the 1790's. This book is hardly the last word on the subject of the French `export of revolution' but it certainly is the first word. Read on.

R.R. Palmer's "World of the French Revolution" is an excellent account of how the French Revolution impacted Europe. Palmer shows how the ideals of liberty and equality swept into other European land with the help of French armies. Palmer also dispels many of the myths of the revolutionaries such as them being members of the Illuminati, or other secret societies. Instead he shows how most of the revolutionaries were more worried about the establishment and securing republicanism in France.

Palmer dives into the "revolutions" in the "sister republics" of Switzerland, Holland, Italy, Poland, Great Britian, and the United States. In Europe the Revolution collapsed the old order tearing down feudalism. Guilds, corporations, taxes, tithes, tariffs, and aristocracy were swept away. He also relates how the Revolution changed European society forever. His chapter on the US was very interesting. He shows how the "democrats" like Jefferson, Madison, and other republicans were avid supporters of the Revolution believing that republicanism everywhere depended on it's sucess. Overall an excellent study.

R.R. Palmer's The World of the French Revolution explores and extensively describes the origins and outcomes of the Revolution. What sets this often overlooked book apart from all other texts on the French Revolution, is its insiteful and intellectual commentary that is intertwined with extensive facts. The book is presented in an easily readable fashion that is not boaring(as are many other acclaimed Revolution texts). It is ideal for any upper level history student and teachers alike because the content is tremendously through.

Brookfield writes in a personal tone, sharing what he has learned in 20 years of teaching adults. He suggests that college students are adults, and should be taught as such. This is the sort of book you like to read when you've had a bad day and think no one else feels like this. Brookfield makes it okay to talk about things like feelings, discouragement, inferiority, degree of student involvement, etc. For beginning students or veterans alike, this book can easily become a teacher's friend--a source of comfort, ideas, and challenges which can help you survive and grow, both personally and professionally.

Should be required reading for teachers at all levels for discussion and comment. This edition is well updated. A good vehicle for faculty development.

This book provides practical, yet not presciptive, advice about how to handle many aspects of teaching adults, especially in the community college/4-year college setting. When reading the book, you are privy to the valuable insights of a veterean educator, as if present to an intimate and reflective conversation about what it is like to teach this population. Again, The Skillful Teacher: On Technique, Trust, and Responsiveness in the Classroom is not a how-to book, but rather one that successfully provides the moorings to becoming a great teacher.

Steven Akey writes of his time in college in a way that made me relive my own (less painful, thank goodness) but largely forgotten college experience. His feelings of lonelieness and alienation are intense, and yet related with a sense of grace and humor that I found irresistable. I'll try to get my college-age kids to read this. I am sure they will find it highly entertaining, and I think they will also come away knowing that even the most pathetic and nearly invisible geek they may encounter is also liable to be a real, breathing (suffering) person different only in small ways from themselves.

Economic Foundations of Law is a well-written book, covering all the basics of law and economics. The book is very applied in nature in that many law cases and applications are given and examined through the eyes of an economist. This book has a few things in common with the very popular principles of economics book by Gregory Mankiw. Both authors make use of short chapters that cut straight to the point, and they both have a gift for making a challenging subject understandable. There are twelve chapters in the book: 1) Principles of Microeconomics I, 2) Principles of Microeconomics II, 3) Introduction to the Legal System, 4) Property Law, 5) Problems of Incomplete Property Rights, 6) Informal Creation of Property Rights, 7) the Law of Contracts, 8) Torts, 9) The Economics of Litigation, 10) Criminal Law, 11) Corporation Law, and 12) Taxation. The first two chapters cover the basics of microeconomics like supply and demand, equilibrium, the effects of taxes and subsidies, elasticities, market structures, present value, and key economic terms and concepts. If you haven't taken an economics course in awhile, these introductory chapters will provide the necessary background to get through the rest of the book. This book does not overuse mathematics. There are some equations here and there, but all are well explained and easy to follow. I think Economic Foundations of Law should appeal to a wide variety of readers, not just those interested in studying economics or law. If you like Freakonomics by Levitt and Dubner, you'll find many "freaky" examples discussed here: The market for selling babies, the problem of overfishing, racial profiling, medical malpractice, the economics of crime and punishment, illegal drugs, smuggling, abortion and crime, setting punitive damages, private vs. public law enforcement, etc.

Better than "Freakonomics"

This book is crystal-clear, well written and makes the economic analysis very understandable. I liked it better than "Freakonomics." There are numerous applications to lawyers and the legal profession, like the explanation of why partners in a law firm don't tell their associates about settlement negotiations while the lawsuit is pending. The chapter on informal property rights is a classic, with examples drawn from the California gold rush, sharecropping agreements, whaling, the Shakers, and how law firms divide profits among the partners.

At first glance, it might be mistaken for an old Farmer's Almanac-which is a good thing. One of the things that kills me about lit mags (and I read a lot of them) is the way they all wind up looking the same, with a few notable exceptions. This is one of the notable exceptions-not just the look of it, which is beautiful (hand done illustrations grounded firmly in American printmaking traditions)-but page through and you'll find surprising, challenging stories by names you know and names you don't. The first story, by Bob Olmstead, is fantastic-it sets the bar pretty high and the other stories, for the most part, clear it. I'm looking forward to the next issue.

Aimee Bender is one of my favorite writers and I loved her story. She has a wicked sense of humor, but it was touching and sad too. Also really good were the stories by Jonathan Tell and Robert Olmstead (very different from his stories in "River Dogs"). I enjoyed the book as a whole and thought the illustrations were cool and unique.
