This book is so helpful for parents who want to do the right thing for their child/athlete but have no guidance and must depend on the local coach/teacher. This book puts the child first and gives sound advice on getting the most out of the individual for the sake of that individual. This book is also helpful to the coach who needs positive backing with the written word. Often we may say and do the right things with our young athletes and their parents, but it is so helpful to have credible backing. If more parents/coaches/teachers had this book to follow years ago, we would not have a lot of the problems that we have from beginner to professional athlete. Our professional athletes are who they are because of early year coaching and mentoring. I wish that I could make coaches, parents and athletes young and old read this wealth of information. We are seeing an influx of older citizens taking up lifetime, competitive sports for the first time and there needs to be guidance for them also. I am going to ask that my academic dean allow this book to be used as a text for my teaching theory class at my community college. I am a tennis teaching professional/community college faculty member/men-women community college tennis coach/director of tennis at a public tennis facility/and still an avid competitor, and will refer to this book often in all of those entities. This text will be something that my students who are future coaches can use as a reference for years from now. Thank you for this opportunity to review. It's not often getting a chance to catapult such a positive, educational book.

This book just became required reading for the parents of my tournament players. Dr. Brown has done an excellent job with the interviews and research for this book. The tennis references are very impressive. Stella Sampras, Jim Loehr, and Dick Gould literally pack every paragraph with valuable information.

I started using the physical tests for my juniors this week, and I was surprised to see a few of them in the upper percentages. I've also added two of the tests to my lesson plan for new students.

STUMPTOWN KID is superb. The plotting, characterizations, and evocation of period are wonderful. I also think this story has the makings of a great family movie as it has the all-ages appeal of a true classic. I found it compelling, moving and thrilling.

Stumptown Kid is a well written late elementary school age level book. It would be a beneficial book to read to a class at the beginning of a school year, because of the issues that are dealt with as part of the story line. Both issues of bullies and the judging of others by the color of their skin or by where they may live are part of the young boy's life in this story. This book could be used as a springboard to a valuable class discussion. The story is written around the theme of baseball, which adds to the intrigue of the book. There is also a strand of mystery that keeps readers captivated throughout the book.

Every athlete should read this book and carefully follow the principles outlined in each chapter. One of the finest publications for any coach young or old in track and field and cross country. Fundamentals and training of all events from the beginning to the elite athlete. This is my third purchase of this text, newer publications. I have one of the original ones. We may not agree with some of the philosophies of the social teachings but the coaching and technical knowledge is excellent.
I have had some experience personally with some of the former East German teaching and this text is a necessity for a coaches library.

If you are in any way into endurance sports....

I love this book. I was amazed to learn it is out of print. Jeff Cook does an amazing job of taking you inside the life and minds of the greatest athletes in the world. If you are looking for inspiration or motivation of the athletic sort, read this book. I was awestruck at Jeff's ability to extract the emotion and intensity of these athletes. This book was part of an Olympic display at my local library, at the time I was training for my first marathon and thought it would be a great way to boost my motivation, boy did it ever. I found myself having to find seats on the train to work that were out of the way due to my constant tearing, it is that good. I have never competed in a triathlon but since the reading of this book have purchased 3 Ironman videos (I'm addicted) and one day plan to do one. If you are in any way into endurance sports and love to read stories about those who push the body to the physical limit, this one's for you!

I'm a multi sport athlete who trains all year round regardless of what sport I play. I bought a few of these Ultimate Guide to Weight Training books, and they definitely helped me train specifically for the different sports that I play. Then about a year later I received an email from amazon that there was a new edition out. These upgraded editions are even better than the originals, with more articles and a lot more sport-specific information. I would definitely recommend this series to anyone who plays a lot of sports or wants to specifically focus on training for one sport in particular.

I bought this book on impulse without expecting much and so was very pleasantly surprised. I've yet to see another picture book that introduces the notion of adult fallibility with such sweetness and humor. Miss Malarkey, stepping in as soccer coach, endures some rather poor behavior from parents, and boy, does she show them!

My daughter loves the comeuppance, as well as the the fact that some of the humorous dialogue takes place in balloons over the characters' heads. (Your child IS going to be exposed to comic book formatting someday. Isn't it best that YOU be the one to introduce it?)

Kids spend their young lives having to obey adults and take as given that they know better. Miss Malarkey makes it a lot easier to take.

Review Date: 1999-02-23
Having been both a player, coach and referee for many years, I found Dr. Brown's work to be a complete text on coaching youth soccer. This handbook takes the reader through the basics of developing a new soccer club, working with parents and the players and provides a comprehensive understanding the roles and responsibilities of the the coach, players and parents. Included are indepth descriptions (with diagrams and photographs) starting with basic soccer movements and going through complex team drills. If one had to pick only a single book on the game of soccer, this handbook would be it.

The '0 to 40' manual is a speed development, strength and conditioning training program that emphasises improving the forty yard dash. The '0 to 40' training program last six weeks and the manual guides you step by step, day by day exactly what execises to do. Pre-training test, daily journals and post-training test will allow athletes and coaches to track results before, during and after the six week training period. Great for football, soccer, baseball, basketball, field hockey and track athletes.
