Discover the food and philosophy of the people of the South West of France. From a simple omelette with truffel shavings to a terrine of foie gras. Jean and Paul Strang has lived in France for over thirty years and know the warmth of the people and the simple honesty of their food. I have cooked from the recipes and found them to be accurate and delicious. " Pangs of hunger forced me to stop half way through the Cassoulet recipe...fascinating and delicious" Peter Mayle

I am buying this book as a gift, so that I may retrieve my copy.

Enjoyed the England story since it was a continuation of one I had previously read.

The American Southwest story was a good read and Mr. McCafferty always leaves me wanting more. I took the whole weekend because I wanted to savor each story...

An excellent guide that could keep an enthusiastic canyoneer busy for years!

Being a UK publication, I was not familiar with the Cicerone series, but I must say I have been very impressed with this one. There are numerous Grand Canyon hiking guides available, but this one is one of the most complete and well prepared ones I have found. The trail descriptions are clear without being too wordy and include the wise usage of benchmarks and landmarks on USGS topographic maps for the more remote trails of the canyon.

This book does not just cover your basic Corridor (Bright Angel, South Kaibab, and North Kaibab) trails either; it includes trails that will keep the enthusiastic canyoneer busy for many years.

And because it is written for people coming from afar, it is an excellent guide to assist one in all their planning (permits, transportation, shopping, food, lodging, camping, etc.)

And what it does for Grand Canyon trails and planning, it also does for Zion and Bryce National Parks! I highly recommend this guide!

All the World's a Stage

Review Date: 2006-05-25
Towns and regions are fortunate if they have a local historian who devotes years to researching and writing their history. Northern Arizona is fortunate to have Richard and Sherry Mangum, who grew up here and have a strong personal interest in and enthusiasm for the region. In this book they've brought to light a fascinating part of Grand Canyon history that barely gets mentioned in other history books. This book is more than just a history of the stage coach line between Flagstaff and the Grand Canyon. It's a great history of Grand Canyon pioneers, the first whites to live at the canyon and open up tourism there. It includes lively characters like John Hance and Pete Berry and Ralph Cameron. Some readers may be surprised to find that the first tourist facilities at the canyon weren't at the current south rim village but at the Grandview area, where there were several hotels and other facilities. The stage coach line may have been brief in duration but it did intoduce the world to the Grand Canyon, bringing up famous writers like John Stoddard, Charles Lummis, and Harriet Monroe, whose reports helped shape public interest in and perceptions of the Grand Canyon. The stage line also turned John Hance into a legendary character. The stage line itself quickly became famous, showing up in Baedeker guide books. It's a bit surprising, then, that it should be thoroughly forgotten. The Mangums have brought this story back to life, digging into obscure sources and puzzling out the missing links in the story. They've also assembled a gallery of seldom-seen photos, such as one with John Hance and Thomas Moran and a donkey. The book offers a portrait of Flagstaff in the 1890s, and details the building of the stage road and the way-stations along the way. For today's explorers, the book offers detailed maps of the old stage route, much of which can be followed today. The book closes with two sections on early bicycling to the canyon, and the arrival of the automobile age. This is a unique and rich contribution to Grand Canyon history.

Although short and concise, this book captures the essence of the Grand Canyon. Both the writing and the photography are interesting and beautiful. This should be an essential part of anyone's collection who, like me, is truly in love with the Grand Canyon.

Great Cruelties Have Been Reported: The 1544 Investigation Of The Coronado Expedition by historian Richard Flint is a superbly presented, scholarly, detailed historical analysis of not just the Spanish Coronado Expedition into the New World, but also the official investigation by Spanish officials after the Coronado Expedition's two-year duration. Focusing on the primary sources of the extensive documents recording this official investigation, Great Cruelties Have Been Reported unflinchingly surveys and reports the clash between worlds and cultures, the Spanish conquistadors and the Native American peoples. Great Cruelties Have Been Reported is a solid, exhaustively researched, well reasoned, and smoothly written account which is strongly recommended for both academic and community library history collections.

Synthesis of the Nepal Tourism Research Project

Review Date: 2008-10-31
Based on extensive field work and years of personal experience, the authors discuss the development of tourism in the Great Himalaya of Nepal from the early days of mountaineering to present-day trekking. Tourism and its potentials, drawbacks, and risks are illustrated with a focus on the Khumbu/Everest and Annapurna regions, the most popular mountain destinations in the country. The themes addressed include: growth and expansion of mountain tourism; employment and income generation; wealth, poverty, and livelihood as reflected in statistics and personal accounts by local people; the revival of trade with Tibet; tourism and the role of women; the crucial role played by institutions, policies and political stability; and environmental issues such as forest degradation, garbage management, and trail damage. With its numerous illustrations, text boxes, and quotes, the book is intended for a broad readership of policy- and decision-makers in tourism and development, scholars, and tourists and mountaineers who take an interest in mountain development in the Great Himalaya and elsewhere.

Chiles and Salsa - GREAT BOOK!
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2000-05-27
Every salsa in this book contains chiles (New Mexican approved spelling ) from the hottest of tiny chiltepins, to the bland but pleasing familiar green bell. Salsa in Mexico means sauce and applies to both cooked and uncooked preparations. Now that salsa has surpassed ketchup as the nation's most popular condiment, this book rushes in to teach us how to concoct them all, from true Mexican, to New Mexican to Tex-Mex to tropical. Consider apple-citrus salsa for seafood, apricot ginger red chile salsa for roast pork, pickled cactus and tequila salsa for chips.

This was an interesting and well-written book. I'm sorry to see that it's out of print. It contains a lot of interesting information on the desert's plans, animals, and geology. It appeared to be very well researched. and the author seemed to have a great appreciation for this unique part of the country. If you are interested in the desert I would recommend that you try to find a copy of this book.

Very informative, very interesting. I am familiar with the Harvey House, and what I didn't realize was that once the original artifacts were sold that the Harvey House influenced the types of arts and crafts that were being made, even the designs, and the size, based on the fact that tourists were only able to carry items of certain size. Even colors were influenced by the Harvey Company. I remember the Harvey House women in Newton, Kansas. They wore starched uniforms and looked very nice, almost like nurses. This book was not only informative, but it evoked memories. Highly recommended. It gave me a sense of sadness that all of these artifacts were collected to be sold. This was big business. Harvey House was feeding a voracious appetite for things "Indian." At the same time, they were helping to sustain the Native American people who were trying to cope with a changing world. Sam L.
