This is a very literate and intimate account of the early days of the arts in Dallas, Texas. The characters and the storyline portray a rarely seen side of Dallas. There are no loudmouth oilmen or cowboys like you are so used to seeing in stories about Texas. I found it to be very enjoyable.

not just about Dallas, but about contemporary America

I am certainly biased, but I love this book. It's not a conventional history of a city, but a perceptive analysis of contemporry American society in urban form. Graff reveals the underside of glitzy Dallas and goes on to show how the city's myth works to obscures the inequalities that shape this sprawling, segregated, suburbanized metropolis. Like Mike Davs's City of Quartz, a study of LA as postmodern America, this book delivers more than it promises. Read it, and you'll see skyscrapers, freeways, and city spaces in amazing new ways, wherever you go.

If you live in the Dallas area (within 100 miles) and you want to learn how to garden and landscape, or learn more about it, this is an absolute must-have. There's a section that tells you what's important to be done and what can be done month by month, then sections on great trees, shrubs, vines, groundcovers, perennials, annuals, fruits and vegetables, bulbs, roses, you name it. It's got it all.
I went from having a black thumb (my husband used to say plants would shrink in horror if I approached) to having a yard that strangers slow down by and roll down their window to ask me what I'm doing to make it look like that, LOL. It's just an amazing book, very user-friendly and practical information for just about anything you would grow here!

This work provides information that is detailed and well presented. Many historical volumes deal with one or two issues while Mr. Abruzzi has defined settlement, ecology, and development of the Little Colorado Basin and included detailed analyses of the contributing factors. Anyone interested in the history or ecology of the area will find here a reference that eclipses other books on the subject.

Inter-tribal relationships from a Native Perspective

Most academic books about Natives tend to look at a single tribe at a time, completely missing the extraordinary balances struck by tribes moving through each other's lands or competing in hunting or trading. Meredith (Longhair Clan Cherokee) illustrates that, while WAR is the metaphor for human relationships in Anglo-Saxon cultures, DANCE is the metaphor for tribes on the Southern Plains. Illuminating!

This book is a fascinating look at a topic that reveals much about what life, and death, were like in Spanish Colonial New Mexico. While most researchers focus on baptismal and marriage records to gain insight into a community's life and survival, Will de Chaparro looks in darker corners at a people in order to shed light on a culture that has thrived and survived for over four centuries.

Graphic Description of Indian Wars

I read Wellman's two excellent histories, 'Death on the Prairies' and 'Death in the Desert' years ago but these gripping books have remained on my mind ever since. 'Death in the Desert' is primarily about the Apache Wars of the southwest. A relative handful of warriors from different Apache tribes keep a far more numerous U.S. Military guessing for many years. There are graphic descriptions of the savageries the Apache visited on their enemies...this book is not for the sqeamish.
At the same time, it's fascinating to consider a now long-gone warrior culture that gave and expected no quarter. Of course the Americans aren't innocent, either. Those Apache's who do bend a knee and surrender to the U.S. reservation system are degraded and many die.
Ron Braithwaite, author of novels--"Skull Rack" and "Hummingbird God"--on the Spanish Conquest of Mexico.

With "Deer of the Southwest", Jim Heffelfinger has the merit of creating a performing work for every one wants to learn about Mule Deer and With-Tailed Deer and the wildlife in the America's Southwestern environments.
The work includes 9 chapters treating the taxonomy of the deer, their historical perspectives (including the evolution of the family in America), physical characters (especially those which let people distinguish the two species), their antlers in particular (their shape, variation, and main anomalies), animals' requirements in water and food, their density, home range, and movements, their reproduction, their mortality, and finally, their management.
The book marks an important step in the understanding American wildlife and makes its author as one of the most authoritative specialist on knowledge and management of deer in the America's Southwestern.
Its style is easy and pleasant and the book can be easily read by the scientist as well as all non specialist. Wildlife management agents, university teachers and researchers, people found of wildlife of simple curious in natural history can found here a lot of interesting knowledge and information about this subject.
