This book is clear and concise. It gives a lot of information about Barry Goldwater, his life and his career. My daughter had chosen biography as a book genre for this quarter's book report. This was a fun, easy book to do a report on.

Uncluttered Magic of the Pecos Wilderness

Once upon a time, when wolves were still gone from New Mexico, as a kid I used to walk down Palace Avenue in Santa Fe from my home to the Plaza. There was a house along the way where an extremely old man lived. I used to stop there whenever I could get away with it and sit and listen to him tell stories about his time as a ranger in the Pecos Wilderness.

The man was Elliott Barker. Eventually I got my hands on a copy of his book, Beatty's Cabin. His writing was every bit as good as his story telling. Sadly, my copy of the book is long gone, and I find now it is long out of print.

This is a tragedy. His tales of the Pecos Wilderness in the early twentieth century are a true New Mexico treasure. His views on wildlife may be environmentally unpalatable to us now (he believed in eliminating wolves and grisly bears to benefit ranchers), but his awe at the beauty and strength of the Pecos Wilderness, and his concern for true wilderness as a vanishing resource could kindle a love for our natural environment in almost any reader.

In a newly updated, revised, and expanded edition, Bell Ranch: Cattle Ranching In The Southwest, 1824-1947 is an informative, engaging, at times fascinating history of cattle ranching in the Southwest from the founding of the Bell Ranch as part of a Spanish government land grant, down to the present day when it is much smaller, but still very active and viable. Here is also a history of the people that saw the Bell Ranch through hard and turbulent times, that lived and worked as cattlemen plying their trade in the cattle country of the southwest. David Remley (Professor Emeritus at the University of New Mexico) provides a skillfully written and admirably presented 416 page history that is enhanced with vintage photographs. Bell Ranch is very highly recommended reading for students of the American southwest in general, and cattle ranching in particular.

Easy to read and full of pictures. I got it for myself because I wanted more sketches and drawings of the fort. On the whole, the book provides solid background on Bent's Fort and the Trail for young readers without patronizing them.

Nice collection of Bike paths in the southwest
Helpful Votes: 21 out of 21 total.

This book covers bike paths and routes in several cities in Arizona (14 routes), Southern California (6 routes), Northern California (26 routes), Nevada (2 routes) and Utah (8 routes). There are no maps of the routes but the author does a pretty good job of describing them. The descriptions are pretty detailed including such things as places to park, restroom locations, places to eat, level of difficulty, and condition of pavement.

This book seems to be written with the casual cyclist in mind. If you're looking for a route where you can "hammer" out 40 miles at a fast pace then this book is not for you. If you're looking for a place to enjoy a leisurely weekend ride with friends or children, then this book was designed with you in mind, For example, in their level of difficulty ranking the authors consider a 3-mile route with rolling hills to be "challenging."

The only negative comment I have about the book was that it was written about 5 years ago so some of these routes may have changed over the years. For most of the routes, the author does provide a phone number to call to get more information about the route. If you're traveling to a new area and plan to ride one of these routes you may want to call ahead of time to make sure the route or bike path still exists or has not changed.

I've been looking for this book with over three years now, and having finally received a copy, it certainly has lived up to my expectations.
If you have "Warpath Across The Pacific" then this is a carbon copy of the "style" of same, and I love this kind of book, which has everything for the aviation historian that one one could wish for......

The Complete Atrisco Land Grant History

Review Date: 2008-09-22
Between Two Rivers consolidates all the published history of the Atrisco Land Grant (New Mexico Historical review Articles and Sanchez's previous book) into one well written book. The Book covers the whole history of the land grant as well as it's later Westland Development phase to the Suncal buyout or rather sellout. The book, despite being a very scholarly work, reads well and even gives a taste of the Atrisco people and culture. If you have heard of Atrisco then this is the book for you.

I love the book. It tells alot about my culture that is not shared anymore. He also shares how unique and beautiful our culture is. It also gives me a connection with my grandfather. When I read the book it seems as if he is right there telling me what he wrote. He shares how things used to be in his time and how they began to change.
